Clare County Library cordially invites you to the launch of its online Singers and Songs of County Clare from the Carroll Mackenzie Collection, featuring over 400 songs from the Carroll Mackenzie Collection of songs, stories, music and folklore collected by Jim Carroll and Pat Mackenzie in London and west Clare over a period of 40 years, with transcriptions of song lyrics accompanying each recording, and various playlists for easy listening. The project is also enhanced by the addition of articles on singers and the song tradition in County Clare.
The Singers and Songs of County Clare from the Carroll Mackenzie Collection will be launched on Thursday the 26th of March by Cllr. Pat Hayes at the Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon, at 8pm.

That's an accomplishment and a half. I hope you're both chuffed big time because you certainly deserve to be. Ain't common that a duo saves hundreds of songs and singers of those songs in one fell swoop that lasted decades. In the parlance, "Ya done real good :-)."

Aw shucks - it was nuffin!!
Seriously - it's been a real pleasure for us and the County Library have made a magnificent job of putting it together - they've transcribed all the songs, included our annotations and photographs, linked to articles and a film of some of the singers - they've had two librarians working on it for over a year - magic.
They have also shown an interest in our Traveller collection and our recordings of storytellers.
The response we have had from our postings so far is very heartening

After next Thursday - the librarians will be working on it right up to the launch then we will circulate the link - it looks great.
Hopefully it will be an ongoing site - we have another few dozen songs to add and then local people will be asked to contribute any recordings they have of parents, neighbours etc.
Don't know if you are familiar with the Clare County Library site, but they already have an impressive music collection, but no songs
MUSIC OF CLARE
Traditional music here in Clare has now been guaranteed a future for at least another few generations - hopefully we can make a start on the song side of things - it used to be great when we started recording back in the early seventies

As Jim said, the songs aren't online quite yet - but for some reason, a Google search brings them up. And if you click on the results, you get nothing - but the Google Cache will give you a nice sneak peek.
That's a wonderful collection of music to explore, Jim.

While I have you there, as a follow up to your question about the timing of those tunes, here's a recording of the man who gave the song Na Cheannabhain Bhana to Séamus Ennis, who then took it up as an instrumental piece, as we played it above.

Fantastic. The Boys of Mullaghbawn sung by Mr Lyons is truly wonderful. The accompanying written notes about the song are great. The ease of access to the site speaks volumes about the IT people, and the foresight of the library collecting and preserving these voices and songs is magnificent.

Peter, that is a very interesting piece of history. Your musicianship is awesome, btw. It is neat to see the development of a slip jig from a lullaby if indeed that's what happened. Thank you very much.

County Clare certainly has a fierce but determined pride about its history. I trust all of you are chuffed with the work you've done.
