Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: GUEST,Covenanter Date: 17 Mar 21 - 07:01 PM The Puritan John Bunyan's 1684 hymn 'He would valiant be' is excellent not quite civil war but he was a contemporary. The original worlds evoke a folkloric world of hobgoblins and pilgrims. Very much a time in which science and magic overlap. A brilliant modern folk song is Steeleye Span's 'Montrose' it tells the tale of James Graham. A Scot and Charles's most competent general, a chivalric anachronism in his own time. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: GUEST,Chris Bennett Date: 05 Jul 20 - 03:21 PM Have a look at my book Historical and Political Ballads and Songs of the Stuart Period. It is still available via Abe Books. It has a number of songs from both the early Stuarts and after including songs from the English Civil War period. My sources are varied. Chris Bennett |

Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Steve Gardham Date: 26 Mar 15 - 05:40 PM Whilst Peter was certainly 'strange' according to his biographer, this one is absolutely typical of his work, unnecessarily stretched out and repetitive, localised version of something from out of the area. On the other hand, what filtered back into oral tradition was a mighty fine song in the end. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Ged Fox Date: 26 Mar 15 - 04:41 PM "Sir John Suckling's Campaign" - possibly a piece of self-mockery by Sir John himself - dates from & relates to the Bishops' War 1639 (prelude to the Civil War.) Tune was almost certainly "Now Ponder Well" |

Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 25 Mar 15 - 07:59 AM Steve "The Bonnie Lass Of Fyvie" itself relates to the Battle of Fyvie in 1644 during the civil war period. The Scottish royalist commander was Montrose with his army being mostly seasoned Irish troops (led by MacColla and Manus O'Cahan) and Highlanders. They sacked Aberdeen committing massacres in the process. Some of the force then marched on Fyvie where it was met by Scottish gvt troops led by Campbell of Argyll. Argyll was defeated but obviously the royalists suffered casualties too and retreated back to Aberdeen. You are right in that it is strange that a Jacobite obsessed 19thC Scotland would take an English song from the Jacobite period and transpose it back to the mid 17thC. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Jim Brown Date: 25 Mar 15 - 06:26 AM There are some songs from printed sources of the time at http://www.lukehistory.com/resources/ballads.html, including "The World Turned Upside Down", which Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band sing (minus one stanza) on the album "Hang Up Sorrow and Care" (not Leon Rosselon's song of the same title about the Diggers). |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: The Doctor Date: 25 Mar 15 - 05:03 AM Strawhead produced an entire CD of 'Songs of the Civil War', which I believe is still available. It has 21 tracks, including 'When cannons are roaring', 'When the King enjoys his own again', and 'Drink old England dry', as well as others you may recognise. A few of these also appear on the LP from the '70s, 'Songs and Music of the Redcoats', which you may be able to find second-hand. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Weasel Date: 25 Mar 15 - 04:15 AM Look up the Strawhead double album - "Songs from the Book of England" - there are a couple of civil war songs on there. Cheers, Weasel |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Steve Gardham Date: 25 Mar 15 - 02:47 AM Apologies, Allan, you did. I'm still curious though as to what makes you think it even relates to the Civil War. I thought Peggy of Derby was 18th century, but I could easily check. It's based on a true story and there is a broadside describing the event, probably at the Bodleian. |

Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: LadyJean Date: 24 Mar 15 - 08:01 PM I almost married an English Civil War reenactor. (Yes, we do have them in the States.) He had a record of them, roundhead songs on one side, Cavalier songs on the other. I don't remember the name. But I suspect it wouldn't be hard to find. Oh, and the last battle of the English Civil War was fought at St. Marye's City, Maryland. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 24 Mar 15 - 07:28 PM I didn't suggest Fyvie was from that date. It relates to that time is what I said. A |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: Steve Gardham Date: 24 Mar 15 - 12:46 PM Bonnie Lass of Fyvie???? I don't think the song it was based on 'Pretty Peggy of Derby' was even that old. There are no versions of BLOF older than c1820 when it was written. There are lots of ballads from that historical period that went into oral tradition but very few actually about the war itself that did. Of course there are lots of broadside ballads concerning the war. You would find them on the University of California's English ballads website in the Pepys/Roxburghe/Crawford etc. collections. This is the most comprehensive site where you would find such ballads. |
Subject: RE: songs from English Civil War From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 24 Mar 15 - 08:17 AM Don't know about originating from that time. There are some from the wider conflict relating to that time. Some Scottish examples would be "The Bonnie Lass Of Fyvie" "The Battle Of Philiphaugh" and the tune to "All The Blue Bonnets Are Over The Border" which is "General Leslie's March To Marston Moor" |
