A brand new annual festival for Hartlepool, with so much to see and do! From the most contemporary folk and acoustic music through to a wealth of traditional singers and musicians, there really is something for everyone. Special concerts and events will celebrate the rich music, heritage and traditions of Teesside and the North East.

Festival Patrons: The Wilsons

Guests include Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick; Chris Wood; Dick Gaughan; Vin Garbutt; The Demon Barbers XL; Alistair Anderson; Melrose Quartet; Jackie Oates; Jig Doll, with Hannah James; Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar; Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker; the Will Pound Band; Debs Newbold & Laurel Swift; Taffy Thomas; Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra; Oss (John Dipper, Tom Moore and Nick Hart); Thomas McCarthy; Cath & Phil Tyler; Paul and Liz Davenport, Durham Miners' Association Brass Band, Johnny Handle, Bob Davenport, George Unthank and Pete Wood, Benny Graham...and World Spoons Champion Bertie Draycott!

Special Events:
Come All Ye Bold Miners. A concert commemorating AL Lloyd's seminal song collection, featuring Dick Gaughan, Durham Miners' Association Brass Band, and some of the local miner/singers Lloyd collected from.

Sea:Coal. A songwriting project and concert celebrating the beautiful new coastal footpath from Hartlepool to Seaham, and the powerful communities it links. In partnership with Durham Heritage Coast.

One Night in Birtley. A celebration of the legendary Birtley Folk Club, which closed its doors in late 2014 after 52 years. Hosted by Doreen and Brian Henderson with festival patrons The Wilsons, and with some of the guests who have made the club so special over the years, this promises to be a magical evening of stories, songs - and a fair few laughs!

Also: Sandra Kerr's Bagpuss and Beyond; Alistair Anderson's A Lindisfarne Gospel; Doc Rowe's archive films of The Copper Family (commemorating Bob Copper's Centenary); Debs Newbold & Laurel Swift's Under Her Skin; Cath and Phil Tyler's Shape Note workshops; and a wealth of workshops, morris sides and participative events.

I don't want my life analysed by someone anonymous in the US or India & expose myself to all sorts of risks. I accept that it seems to be the No 1 point of contact these days and can be very useful I accept there are some ways of keeping info private to some extent but I simply don't trust that my input information is secure, and apart from that it's a serious time waster- morons might have been a bit strong but that comment was in answer to someone who implied it was unreasonable not to click on a facebook link to get information which should have been on Mudcat!

To their credit, the festival organiser put this right later- well done them- facebook does not rule the world, YET

Hi All,

Firstly, personally, I feel I must concur with long time Family friend and the perfectly Teessidely Eloquent Betsy!! ;-)

Secondly, we are delighted to confirm our Patronage of this new Festival....what a line-up! And some great Events being programmed, very exciting.

As noted above, the Festival already has a Facebook Page set up and their website goes live May 1st 2015. In addition, we will be sharing updates on our Family website, Twitter & FB accounts.

Hope to see some of you here in Hartlepool 16th to 18th October 2015:

The website link given a few posts above just throws up a 404 error.

You can access the facebook page without having a facebook account. The link posted above unfortunately was repeatedly throwing up a glitch, which was generated when using the "blue clicky" tool.

The website, which currently is simply a holding page, will be active from 1 May: www.hartlepoolfolkfest.co.uk

Thanks, HFF Guest.
Yes that's right, I can access the Facebook page, but there is no mechanism to actually contact you without having to "sign in" or logging in, which you can only do there if you have a Facebook account as a member. In any case, the festival information on that page was already available here on Mudcat, so Facebook tells us nothing new anyway. Hence the logical query re a contact address!

THE ALISTAIR ANDERSON BAND - A LINDISFARNE GOSPEL
Sunday 18 October

Alistair Anderson is a legend of North East music. A master of the concertina and the Northumbrian pipes, he co-founded both Folkworks, one of the leading folk education organisations in the country, and the Newcastle University folk music degree. He also mentored a young Kathryn Tickell. As a performer, composer and catalyst for amazing musical happenings, he is unequalled in the region and possibly the entire country.

We invited Alistair to bring his beautiful musical suite A Lindisfarne Gospel to Hartlepool because of the Headland's historic connections to Lindisfarne: before St Hild founded the famous Abbey at Whitby, she was sent by St Aidan to Hartlepool to lead the relatively new monastic community here. She stayed several years, and the Headland's iconic church, close to the site of the 7th century abbey, is named for her. St Hilda's church will be the venue for this very special concert.

The suite is inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospel and the island where it was created. Drawing on the roots of Northumbrian music, the interweaving musical lines reflect the intertwining designs of the Gospel's illuminations, and slow airs evoke Lindisfarne's wide skies and rugged landscape.

The lineup for the concert is absolutely first class. In addition to Alistair himself on concertina, there is Andy May on pipes and whistles, Emily Ball on fiddle & viola, Sophie Ball on fiddle, Fiona Beyer on cello and Rachel Newton on harp.

Tickets for this event are just £12.50. Many individual event tickets now available from the website.

What an excellent weekend. Just back after a slow journey home.
Thank you to the organisers for putting together such a packed and quality programme (both main programme and 'fringe').
The Headland must seem very quiet without us.
Highlights for us were the Sea Coal show in the beautiful St Hilda's church, Jackie Oates, Sandra Kerr, Keith Kendrick & Barbara Needham.... ....the list could go on.
Really looking forward to next year.

Hartlepool Folk Festival is based at the Maritime Experience in Hartlepool, now part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy. This lovely site is home to an historic 18th century-themed quay and HMS Trincomalee, the oldest floating warship in the world. From atmospheric concerts overlooking the ship, to below-decks music sessions and shanty singing on the quayside, the Maritime Experience provides a fantastic site for imaginative concerts, workshops, sessions, singarounds and special events. Mainstage concerts take place at the Town Hall Theatre, a 10 minute walk away. Early bird tickets will be available until the end of June.

Artists appearing include:

Andy Irvine, Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band, The Young'Uns, Jim Moray, Vin Garbutt, Blackbeard's Tea Party, John Spiers, The Wilsons, Tom McConville, O'Hooley & Tidow, Robb Johnson, Gina Le Faux, The Keelers, The James Brothers, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson, Imar, The Rheingans Sisters, Róisín White, Rosie Stewart, Bert Draycott, Jim McFarland & Ken Wilson, Rachel Hamer Band. Special events will include a new performance of Graeme Miles' Ironopolis song-cycle, Bob Beagrie's Leasungspell, and a 2-Tone ceilidh.

More details here:
http://hartlepoolfolkfest.co.uk/

Hope to see some of you there!
