Folk might be interested in The "Mansfield Manuscipt" a book that has been recently(privately)printed by Ronnie Clark of The Glasgow Ballads workshop.

Here's a link

This would seem to be well worth investigating.

Highly recommended and all done at cost. This is one that Child never saw. It went missing until after he died. Whilst the ballads and songs are very interesting they are a fascinating window into upper class social mores in 18thc Scotland. The ms was compiled between 1763 and 1786 by Elizabeth St Clair of Edinburgh. She would have been about 25 when she started it. Ronnie has done a great job of researching the family history and identifying the more obscure songs. A few of the ballads did actually reach Child by a roundabout route as C K Sharpe and Chambers had both taken material from it in the early 19thc.

My copy arrived today. Ronnie has made a very important contribution to song scholarship - as well as to the investigation of repertoires and changing tastes. Elizabeth St. Clair evidently compiled these songs over several years entirely for her own amusement. They are what Scots of her time and class truly enjoyed reading and singing - including versions of "Tam Lin," "Young Bekie," and "Sir Patrick Spens"!

Ronnie's done a great job of getting this material to us.

The book - a big paperback - is even beautifully bound!
