Sounds like good news. But I am no expert in the field. Anyone know if it is a real improvement?

Welcome to misery for anyone living near a pub. There should be VERY strict noise limits (levels outside the pub) for amplifiers in residential areas.

Having lived close to a pub that had bands and singers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, I have to agree with Richard. The racket, made worse by the landlord throwing the fire-exit open on warm evenings, was absolutely appalling, and went on until midnight or after, even on Sundays. Our testicle-free local authority declined my numerous invitations to deal with it.

I'm delighted to say that the pub has now closed and will shortly be demolished to make way for a Co-op.

I am not sure that upping the audience limit for deregulated amplified gigs to 500 is such a good idea even with an 11pm limit. The fact of licensing is cheap and easy to deal with, sending an environmental health crew out on double time at a weekend is a chunk of my council tax money that could be better spent elsewhere.

As long as they leave acoustic music alone I am happy.

Safety, environment and nuisance laws should still be in effect

Yes, IF the council has an out of hours enforcement team. That happens in inner London and possibly Manchester but in smaller towns there is nobody to gather the evidence at 11pm.

Precisely, GUEST. Laws are only as good as their enforcement regime.

Is it not good news for folk clubs etc. I seem to remember the furore when legislation regulating the same was passed a few years back. Something to do with Kim Howells?

"but in smaller towns there is nobody to gather the evidence at 11pm"

.. you sure ?

.. You don't think there'd be local neighbourhood watch brigades of intelligence gathering 'concerned' citizens
on alert and at the ready with surreptitious smart phone cams
and noise measuring apps....???

let alone a network of internet sites plotting locations and time/date stamped noise measurements of 'offending'
nuisance pubs and functions...

21st century communications technology and grumpy old gits with too much spare time
will be a powerful force to reckon with....
