Okay, back on track and getting this posted a week in advance.

The April Sea Music, Forebitter, Fo'c'sl Ballad, and Shanty Sing is THIS SATURDAY, April18, 2015 from 3:30 to 7:30 downstairs at The Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth, NH, USA.

Hope a lot of you, now that "silly season" (St. Patrick's month) is over, will come out and sing for the sheer joy of singing. No stage, no microphones, just camaraderie, pub food, good beer, and even a bit of history and lore. Time for some Spring songs, too.

We can hope that wintrish weather is over. AccuWeather says rain for next Saturday...but temperatures in the 60s (F.). In this past week I've regained my mailbox and no longer have to go to the post office every day to pick up my mail. The snow melted so I could find it, and the ice finally released it. I even found the bungie cords to hold it back on the post which is now completely exposed, too. It was a long haul there, since the end of January.

See you Saturday!

Linn

Linn, I led a chantey at the first benefit for Don Sineti. There's more about that on Jane's Rainbow. If I do get up to the Press Room some month, I may try it again.

How does everyone feel about having the May Press Room shanty sing (that's next month, May 16) being a benefit for Don Sineti?

Linn-

Yes, let's make the May Shanty Sing a benefit for Don Sineti.

Looking forward to this weekend's sea music session.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

No chance I can make it in April, but I'll try to get there in May!

Wow! What a session! I might come down off my music-induced high sometime before midnight. Maybe.

I had a sleep-deprived day (had trouble falling asleep Frida night, then awoke way too early) and felt barely functional, but singing does amazing things. I not only successfully navigated the session, but found my way safely home. I was asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow at 9:30.

I'm not sure if I'll get the song list posted today -- I've got a PMFF board meeting this afternoon.

I had the worst time parking before this session that I've ever had -- and I was in town early. I circled for a half hour and then had four people across the street coaching me. (Tight spot; I used absolutely every bit of my parking skills.)

I think we all took silly pills or something. I mused several times that I should have brought the gavel. (Back several decades ago, woodturner and singer David Behm made a gavel for Tom to keep order with at the Friday session. Tom never actually used it. A few years ago I brought it to the session along with a couple other archival things for the benefit of a history lesson. I mentioned that Tom had never used it -- but it's in MY hands now!)

The crew was - Linn Schulz (Bat Goddess), Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) & Judy Barrows (JudyB), Ernie Pigeon (NptErnie) & Amy, Emery Hutchins, Dianne Lavoie, Tami Bill (Ranger1), Peter & Audi & Zinnia Sousa, Martha Bowen, Jeri, Gail & Janice (in a lobster hat), Don Hale, Susan & Dan Young, Bill Lehrman & Carol Pierson, Marty Stock (Bupkes), Bruce MacIntyre, Dave Nunes, Mike Modern, Alan Eaton, Jeff Warner (with 35 minutes left in the session), Carol Coronis, Gail McCarthy.

1. May Song - Linn Schulz
2. Fire Marengo - Charlie Ipcar
3. Boney Was a Warrior - Ernie Pigeon
4. Country Life - Dianne Lavoie (truncated)
5. 150 Days Out From Vancouver - Dianne Lavoie
6. The River Lea (different tune) - Emery Hutchins
7. My Name It Is Dan, Dan - Don, Don Hale
8. Follow the Heron Home - Martha Bowen
9. Essequibo River - Sue Young
10. The Story of the River - Judy Barrows
11. Astoria's Bar - Pete Souza
12. Sailor's Prayer - Linn Schulz
13. A Billy of Tea - Emery Hutchins
14. William Taylor - Carol Coronis
15. Dogger Bank - Ernie Pigeon
16. Stormalong, Stormy, Stormalong - Charlie Ipcar
17. Mollymauk - Audi Souza
18. Tinker, Tailor - Dianne Lavoie
19. Bulgine Run - Bruce MacIntyre
20. Final Trawl - Emery Hutchins

25. Mobile Bay (Roll the Cotton Down) - Charlie Ipcar
26. Sugar In the Hold - Sue Young & Carol Coronis
27. Fire Down Below - Jeri & conga line
28. Bully In the Alley - Marty Stock
29. Northwest Passage - Bruce MacIntyre
30. Noah Built the Ark - Sue Young
31. Tryin' to Make Heaven My Home - Audi Souza
32. Roustabout Song (Cairo-Town) - Don Hale
33. Old Zeb - Emery Hutchins
34. Padstow - Dianne Lavoie
35. Rothsea-O - Mike Modern

37. Mama Liza Jane - Pete Souza
38. Blood Red Roses - Bruce MacIntyre
39. Natchez and the Delta Queen Race - Charlie Ipcar
40. Big Bow Wow - Ernie Pigeon
Somewhere in here we went through the whole birthday medley for a table of the unwary up towards the bar -- Happy B.D. to Halleluyah Chorus, "Why Were You Born So Beautiful", "Birthday Dirge"...they didn't know what they got themselves into.
41. Pleasant and Delightful - Marty Stock
42. Nine Times a Night - Linn Schulz
43. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don Hale
44. Strike the Bell - Alan Eaton
45. Don't You Remember Cape Ann? - Martha Bowen
46. Hills of Isle au Haut - Bruce MacIntyre
47. Sally Free and Easy - Sue Young
48. Drill Ye Tarriers Drill - Mike Modern
49. Female Drummer - Sue Young
50. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn Schulz
51. The Mary Ellen Carter - Marty Stock

53. The Old She-Crab - Charlie Ipcar
54. The Lobster - Linn Schulz
55. Haul, Boys, Haul - Don Hale
56. The Fireship - Bruce MacIntyre
Bruce sings "...a decent girl, but one of the rakish kind." Tom always pointed out that women, by definition, could not be rakes. Charlie's mother, Dahlov Ipcar, has a more accurate line for the chorus (and she's a lot older than Bruce) -- "...decent girl, but built along rakish lines." I'm sure it's been recorded any number of times as "one of the rakish kind", but I prefer Dahlov's line. Just a historical note.
57. John Kanaka - Ernie Pigeon
58. The Great West Road - Dave Nunes
59. The Sailor Likes His Bottle-O - Jeff Warner
60. Nelson's Prayer - Don Hale and Company

Please let me know of any additions or corrections. Thanks! It was a really great session! Photos at Facebook on several people's pages and "Pressroom Gang and Clan".
