They are in hot water for putting the slogan
The perfect beer for removing No from your vocabulary for the night.

With all the news about date rapes, what kind of overpaid brain trust came up with that. Gonna cost them big time to recall. Ya can't fix stupid.

Just putting the words Bud Lite and beer together in the same sentence should be grounds for prosecution.

Now, now. Just because it's Not Even Near Beer doesn't mean it's bad. Awful, tasteless, maybe -- but it's not Coors Lite.

Sounds like the folks in Bud Light's marketing department might have sampled a bit too much product during one of their brainstorming sessions.

I went to the Pop Shop a few days ago and the price of suds was UP. I voiced my disapproval. Buddy says Bud Lite is on sale. I figured, hey, I am up a few pounds so, WTH and I bought some to check it out. Lost weight real quick! At about 3AM. Bud Lite and an all veggie stir fry for supper = HOLY CRAP!

Doesn't shock me that the Bud Light folks would come up with the sorts of obnoxious slogans that they have - this one isn't the first- they are producing a product for a clientele who are not concerned with offending anyone or drinking something that actually resembles beer. If you note the places they advertise and functions they support, it's obvious that Bud Light is the choice for beer-chugging for those who are barely old enough to drink, if that. This has never been a scene I participate in, but have had it in my face too often when I've been involved in something nearby, or seen the aftermath.

gah.

Just thinking about it makes me want to go out and get a Great Lakes Brewery Burning River Pale Ale.

I haven't drunk anything from Bud for 'about' 30 years.... since I choked down half of one to be polite at my wife's family gathering..... when no one was looking, I poured the rest in a potted plant.

Molson is barely better... most of Sam Adams is quite tolerable. Now, if you wanta try amazing beer, try Dogfish Head from Delaware.

There is a venerable bar (managed somehow to make it thru Prohibition), called Doyle's, in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. About 30 years ago, it came under new management, which decided to spiff the place up & attract a higher-class clientele. The new boss, to get rid of the riffraff, ceased to serve Budweiser. And it worked! One of the old customers happened in, and the boss said "Haven't seen you for a while", and he said "You don't have Bud any more", and the boss said (to himself) "Thank Christ!". This was all spelled out in a feature article in the Boston _Globe_, which I imagine was read with amusement by the Anheuser-Busch people.

Nothing excuses that sort of insensitivity. I don't recall any such slogan from beers here but there have been some really dire add campaigns.

We had some awful beer back in the 60s and 70s. Watney's Red Barrel epitomised crap pretty much like Bud does over there! Sadly some remain but CAMRA did a stalwart job of reversing the trend and making sure we still have some wonderful beers available amongst the mass-produced dross. We are also enjoying an influx of American craft beers which are as good if not better than many locals!

Methinks any relation of Bud Lite to beer is purely accidental. Of course that goes for any so-called light beers.

It's mind-boggling that such an advertising slogan - which was surely thought up, submitted, and approved by a dozen A-B professionals and executives - made it through to print.

Of course Bud Light (and any other A-B product, IMO) is piss. But the more important point here is the corporate or even societal mindset among younger males which ignores or condones rape, that's apparently so widespread that no one involved said, "Wait a minute..."

It reminds me of UPS' "Brown knows" ad campaign from a few years back. But as a symptom of a major problem, this is much worse.

Check out Alaska Mike's song ( Mike Campbell) !!

And I think its worth pointing out that Watneys Red Barrel EXPORT actually tasted like beer , TOTALLY different taste to the UK version . My UK Folk Club then was in a Watney Pub , but I DID drink quite a bit of Red Barrel in Bermuda and New York in the mid seventies !

As far as USA goes , Sam Adams does some damn fine beer out of Boston - DO like their bottled Black and Tan !

THAT answers my question, Tom. (I suppose it's an art to choose a beer good enough to cook with, but not SO good that it's better just consumed as-is.)

I believe that when cooking with beer you should stick to the same maxim as when cooking with wine - never cook with a wine (or beer) that you would not enjoy drinking.
I recently cooked a slow roast shoulder of lamb and the recipe called for a bottle of dry white wine. I used a good quality Pinot Grigio which we enjoy and the results made me feel that it was well worth it.

I think that Americans do a lot of things really well. However, there are three things they should not be allowed to mass produce. Bread, Cheese and Beer. Just as the English should never be allowed to make coffee, bbq anything or make toast.

michaelr, this thread was started by someone with the same concern and outrage you've expressed, and several other posts develop the same line of thought. I'm acquainted enough now with the thinking of most everyone who has posted to be assured that none of them finds the advertising approach remotely defensible. Your point was very well made. Not everyone has bothered to belabor what has already been well said.

Yeah, when I am over in The States, especially around Boston, I enjoy Sam Adams. I think the best US beer I have had is a local one brewed on the premises at The Mangy Moose at Jackson Hole Wyoming. It's called Moose Drool.

Either it's good or drinking anything at high altitude tastes good.....

Generally though, I see American beers as thirst quenchers rather than session brew.

Remembered the two US craft beers I tried straight from the breweries - Trailhead from St Charles, Missouri and Schlafly from St Louis - Both very nice and with eateries attached to the brewery. Hoping for a similar experience locally later this week at Naylors Brewery, Crosshills where they have just opened a restaurant called Beer Bellies Kitchen - Looks good on paper anyway :-)

HiLo & Musket.... 35 years ago, the problem with American beer was sad and well known. Then one guy in California started New Albion Brewery.... and today there are GOOD beers available almost everywhere. I can go to 20-30 places within 20 minutes drive and get fine beer & ale...bottled or on tap.

http://www.craftbeer.com/the-beverage/history-of-beer/the-american-story

I get SO tired of repetition of the notion that we still have ONLY poor beer..we have plenty of poor beer, but anyone who makes the effort can have beer to compete with any country... with the possible exception of special Belgian monastery creations. (and some breweries are getting close to that!)

Yeah, some good ones. A bit like here with microbreweries etc.

That said, marketing being what it is, we are all led to believe Budweiser is what every man in The USA drinks, and then goes on to Jack Daniels...

Anyway, about to walk down to the local pub for a few pints of Boltmaker before taxiing on to a restaurant for our wedding anniversary. Beer, you see. Suits every occasion.

I was in a pub in Doolin (tourist trap, I know) 15-16 years ago...all of the tourists were drinking Guinness (except me - Smithwicks) and the locals were drinking Bud. I guess its all a matter of what seems 'exotic' to you.

I do have some Bub Lite in the house...someone left it here after a party. It's great for killing garden snails - just put a little in a dish; they drink it and drown.
