Poor old Kemp - he's probably dancing in his grave at being referred to as "Shakespeare's clown".
Kemp was the greatest comedian of his day; Shakespeare got all precious because Kemp ad libbed outrageously for laughs and stole the show. After Kemp left the company, he seems to have been shut out of the theatre, and died in penury. I blame Shakespeare; don't cross a powerful actor-manager if you're freelance and value your career, no matter how beloved you are of the public; the public is and was a fickle creature.
