Subject: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 04 May 15 - 05:28 PM Since we've declared the May Press Room sing to be a benefit for Don Sineti of Mystic Seaport, I figured I'd better do the initial announcement a little further ahead than the usual one week out. Don is home from the hospital and rehab, but the bills, I'm sure, are still piling up. Last we heard from Don, his doctors say he may be performing again by June. The May Sea Music, Forebitter, Fo'c'sl Ballad, and Shanty Sing is Saturday, May 16th, 2015 from 3:30 to 7:30 downstairs at The Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth, NH, USA. As Barry O'Brien put it so well, "Don has been such a major player in keeping Maritime History alive in both story and song. Now, he needs our help. For the May Session, please dig in and come with both checks and great songs to support Don Sineti, who has done so much to bring maritime history alive!" As was reported in the original benefits thread started by Dan Milner, you can also send some financial assistance directly to Don -- Donald A. Sineti 54 Ellsworth Bloomfield, CT 06002 Or if you can't attend, I can forward your check along with what we raise on May 16th. Please come and help us raise both some help for Don and the rafters in song! Linn |

Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 13 May 15 - 07:29 PM I'm still planning to go, but I'm starting to get anxious. For the first time on Saturday I visited my son's family's new home an hour-and-half away and hated the drive. Portsmouth is almost twice as long a trip and means driving through Boston and perhaps worse, Saugus. Then there's parking. The garage worked well for me the last time I went and isn't far from the Press Room, but since my knee injury in December, distance has become relative. I'll wear a knee brace and have my cane so I hope I'll be okay. If I'm lucky enough to find a street spot closer to the Press Room, at what time does one no longer need to pay for street parking? And I'll have to relearn how to get the parking pass from the machine. I'm used to feeding quarters into meters right next to my car. BTW, because my injury is temporary, I don't have a handicapped pass. Even if I did, states don't have to honor passes issued by other states. |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 May 15 - 10:47 AM ChanteyLass, if you get to Daniel Street (The Press Room) around 3:30-ish on Friday (when I try to get there), there's a pretty good chance you can find a parking spot nearby. If I don't find one first time 'round, I turn right on Penhallow at the Federal Bldg. (across from the Press Room), then turn right on Bow St., and bear right (you have no choice) onto Chapel and you'll find yourself again at Daniel St. All one ways. I sometimes have to go around a couple times, but, the time from, say 3-4 is a good time to snag a parking spot. On Saturday I find that I seldom have trouble -- I get there between 2:30 and 3:00 for the 3:30 start and catch a bit of the jazz. I've got a handicapped placard so I don't have to worry about it, but I can go out instead of you (or find someone more agile and energetic than either of us) to go out and "feed the meter" (which, of course, if it's on Daniel means the kiosk for a paper ticket -- though not on Penhallow, which has meters which use quarters). Hours between which you have to pay for parking (on street) are 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. There's also a shuttle bus, but the drop off spot is at the parking garage. Portsmouth Parking Information Linn We'll work something out to make life easier for you. |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 May 15 - 10:49 AM Taking 495 around the Boston area might be less hectic driving, but it probably adds a little more mileage. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 14 May 15 - 08:45 PM I'll probably make a split second decision when I approach that exit and have to decide which way to go. It always seems like such a long way around. So one can just pay again and stay in the same spot and pay again? Hmm. But I'd hate to have to leave the music however briefly, and if I don't want to do that, it doesn't seem right that anyone else should have to do it for me. The good news is that my knee has been pretty good since Sunday, and I'm being careful not to overdo. I'm probably just being over-anxious about the whole trip. |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 May 15 - 02:25 PM I've got a Maine Old Cemeteries Association meeting in the morning in New Gloucester, Maine -- I'll be on the road around 6 in the morning to get there from Nottingham, NH. Then I'll be high tailing it back to Portsmouth for the session. Hope I have a little bit of time in the oldest cemetery in New Gloucester. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 15 May 15 - 07:28 PM All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go . . . Well, my overnight bag (just in case I decide to put up in a motel instead of driving home Saturday night) is half-packed. I'll throw in a few more things in the morning. |

Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 16 May 15 - 11:53 PM Well, that was fun! I especially liked hearing people do a couple of songs I strongly associate with Don Sineti. Charlie, I liked your new song. And folks, thank you for encouraging me. |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Sineti Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 May 15 - 12:57 PM ChanteyLass, it was a delight having you back at The Press Room and especially having you sing! We actually had several Press Room singing debuts yesterday -- ChanteyLass, Gail Finn and her daughter Amanda, and then even Jim Finn led a song. Jim and Gail have been coming to listen to the Friday trad sessions, but this is the first time they've led songs. Larisa was our server instead of Jaki (who seemed to have a day off), and she got stuck with telling me just before starting time that there was a band upstairs -- not on the Press Room printed schedule -- that would be starting at 6 p.m., so we'd have to cut our session a bit short. The crew was me, Linn Schulz (nom de Mudcat Bat Goddess), ChanteyLass from Rhode Island (even further away than Don Hale), Emery Hutchins, Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Mike Modern, Tami Bill (Ranger1), Don & Cathy Hale from southernmost Massachusetts, Gail & Jim Finn with their daughter Amanda, Bruce MacIntyre, Bill Lehrman & Carol Pierson from Boston, Nicole Hourihan, Dave Nunes, Justine Donovan, Carol Coronis, sisters Gail & Janet, W.B., Phyllis, and, who'd I forget to note? 1. Si Bheag Si Mhor/Ode to Whiskey - Emery Hutchins 2. Whiskey-O, Johnny-O - Charlie Ipcar 3. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn Schulz 4. Old Zeb - Emery Hutchins 5. Shenandoah - Don Hale 6. Saltwater Cowboy - Mike Modern (from Simani, a Newfoundland and Labrador duo) 7. Bold Fisherman - Bruce MacIntyre 8. The Rhyme of Charon the Ferryman - Charlie Ipcar 9. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn Schulz 10. Rolling Down to Old Maui - Emery Hutchins 11. Great West Road - Dave Nunes 12. Sonny's Dream - Gail & Amanda Finn 13. Bay of Biscay - Linn Schulz 14. What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor - Carol Coronis 15. 100 Years On the Charles W. Morgan - ChanteyLass 16. The Chanteyman - Charlie Ipcar 17. Grey Funnel Line - Don Hale 18. Maggie May - Linn Schulz 19. Bulgine Run - Bruce MacIntyre 20. Leaving of Liverpool - Emery Hutchins And right now it's the Leaving of Nottingham, as I need to head to Portsmouth to catch Emery Hutchins and Jim Prendergast -- as Two Old Friends -- at Portsmouth Library. I'll finish the list when I get home (or tomorrow morning -- I'll leave myself some wiggle room). Linn |

Mobile Bay (Roll the Cotton Down) - Charlie Ipcar 32. Shenandoah - Amanda Finn 33. Nelson's Prayer - Don Hale and company Please let me know of errors and omissions. And thanks, everyone, for coming and for contributing to getting Don Sineti back on his feet. I'll write a check to Don for the cash donations, add my own check, the card we all signed, and the sealed envelopes, and get the whole shebang in the mail to Don tomorrow. So we shut down at 6:00 and Justine, Phyllis, and I stayed to eat supper and Tami stayed to keep up company. Jeff Warner showed up at about his usual time (6:45) to discover we'd had to close early, but he stayed long enough to sign the card and put a donation into the collection bag. Thanks again, everyone! Linn |
