As I've said many times before, it's the people who come to the Getaway who make it so very special. The weather wasn't ideal, to be sure, but it could have been so much worse -- there were times during the preceding week when it was forecast to be seriously horrendous, but we lucked out. I guess we just live right, huh? By the way, extra thanks are due to the camp staff at West River, who were helpful and pleasant as always, assured us the buildings were safe from flooding, and even provided us with explicit directions for what to do in case of a power failure. As it happened, we didn't need them, but with high winds and saturated ground, it was all too possible. Our numbers were down somewhat from previous years, but those who made it were great! Highlights for me included: A fabulous fiddle duet (and lots of other stuff) by Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen; The opportunity to get to know the Short Sisters, whom I've admired for years; A wonderful upbeat Gospel workshop with Sheila Kay Adams, Flawn Williams, and a whole roomful of great singers; The chance to hear once again the beautiful voice of Sarah White, whom I fervently hope will continue to grace us with her presence; The opportunity to meet Tim Radford, who came highly recommended, but whom I'd never encountered, and to hear his marvelous big voice; And of course, the special treat of getting together with all of my dear friends whom I get to see only once a year. There were of course plenty of other great moments as well, but those are the ones that spring to mind at the moment. I can hardly wait till next year -- speaking of which: PLAN NOW for the next Getaway, which will be somewhat earlier in the year than usual: SEPTEMBER 23-26, 2016! Mark your calendars!! Late night sessions with Pete Kramer, swapping songs with Kendall Morse, jamming in the Peace Cabin and the late night jam with the amazing Western North Carolina gang Sheila Kay Adams & The Scofflaws were unforgettable. The long drive up from Raleigh in the pouring rain was another delight5, as we had the van packed with boisterous talent of the first order--Abby Sales, Dani Black, Joe Offer, and Derek Lane all singing in harmony or sequence or both, but singing. All told, I tell ya, it was a gas. AS with every year, my profound thanks to Nancy, Charley and the rest of the stalwarts who make this remarkable gathering happen every year. They are the quiet miracle workers among us. A. |

A smaller group in attendance than in past years, and with flood warnings and hurricane warnings it was no surprise. I arrived Friday afternoon and the forecast was still uncertain. Friday night was a night of howling wind and tossing trees and BIG water puddles on the walkway, but that only added to the coziness inside the Retreat center and Peace cabin, where music went on until about 1 am. Saturday was calmer and not as wet, and we were able to attend the workshops and amble across the west river campus with a minimum of hassle. More familiar faces began to appear, our numbers increased, and the event began to feel like home, despite the inclement weather. Some sessions and happenings that stand out for me: Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen singing and playing Robin Williamson's October Song with the medieval drone of the harmonium filling the room as the wind and rain owned the night outside. Pete Kraemer knocking out a blues on the steel resonator guitar. Going off-trail in the Trail Songs session to hear a great collection of new and old cowboy songs that made the hour fly past. Kendall's Bear tale. Singing We Shall Overcome in a hand-holding circle of singers and sharing stories of how things really have gotten better, and of how far we still need to go. Dan Schatz' stories of Jean Ritchie and his rendition of Cool of the Day. Phil Fox, in spite of a recent stroke, leading every one in a rousing rendition of If I Had a Hammer at the close of Sunday's concert. Amazing Grace at midnight in the retreat center. Jessie Palidofsky's song about the Beats. Talisker. Carpe Manana. A while back, Amos and I co-wrote a song about the Getaway with the line "Lord, willing and the creek don't rise, I'll see you at the Getaway." Well, the creek rose, but apparently the Lord was willing for us to have a truly memorable gathering. |

They said it would be fine and would not hurt the animals. The noise was bothering the performers and jammers. We should request that again this year. It will help the music. |

Even during the last big storm that sent a storm surge up the Chesapeake Bay, Hurricane Isabel, all their buildings stayed dry, and their paved parking lots were in good shape. (Just everybody--don't park off the pavement!) The worst scenario they imagined was if high winds take the power out--they have generators for the water system and the dining hall, so we can flush toilets and they can feed us, although the other buildings and cabins could be dark, so bring flashlights or lanterns, just in case. We're keeping an eye on the storm, which has been VERY difficult to predict. If the Getaway has to be cancelled (which I think is very unlikely), there are a LOT of us who live in the DC area, especially Silver Spring, and we will party here (and find room to put put up guests amongst us.) My guess is that we will have a fine time, but wet. Bring rain gear, for sure. The very worst weather is expected to be right on Sat. & Sun. We are having work done on the house, and some areas would be at risk.... and basement flooding is 'possible' if it gets too bad. I will watch closely the next two days, but it is possible my 36 year string of never missing a minute of Getaway weekend may be broken... More later.... (I suspect that way too many people are only in Facebook and seldom read Mudcat... I guess I'll post warnings there also.) I'd sure love for this to be a false alarm... but we shall see. |

The cat would have been OK, but the dog is a quirky, neurotic, aging, senile creature that I can't have just anyone stay with, and he doesn't do well being left with someone in their home. |

We now have 12 people willing to stay in the Peace Cabin bunks, despite music going on in its living room all night long. We feel though that we must use that space for daytime workshops because of its central location, handicap access, and for all the other reasons Janie finds it such an inviting place for music making. I give a Saturday vocal clinic there and it is intimate and encouraging of shy singers to let all their dreams, skills, and problems hang out in a small group of supportive people. The Nature Center is a glorious place for late night jams too-- but there is usually one that goes on till about 2:00-AM that tends to be impromtu arrangements of traditional song-- kind of Celtic in instrumentation and low-key, intimate. We tried Eilers last year as the Aquarium in the Nature Center was very noisy. Late at night, Eilers takes on a charm of its own-- like singing in a eerie castle or cathedral. |

I think several of the key people who do most of the work to make the Getaway happen are not going to be able to attend this year due to an unvoidable scheduling conflict, but are still working hard to make sure it all comes together, and expect the schedule will soon be posted on the FSGW website and that one of the FSGW folks will post a link here. My hat is always off to the core folks with FSGW who put in so much effort that insures the Getaway happens each year, for the past 50+ years. |

The dim lights and "in the living room" feel would be shame to have to give up, not to mention the superior accoustics in the cabin common room. I hate the bright lights and the lousy accoustics in the old dining hall. Works OK for the concert with the pa system, but No sense of intimacy at all, which is what I like best about the late night song circles in the Peace cabin. As I well know from manning the auction during workshops, the least little private conversation is disruptive in that remarkably accousticly challenged space if it is not packed with people and a PA. It is not a place where some one who might be a bit timid about offering a song in a less cozy setting is likely to be comfortable doing so. Also not a space where people might actually start building relationships. A suggestion, fwiw. It seems, between the succession of workshops during the day and the nearly until dawn song circle in the evenings, the common room in the Peace lodge has music going close to around the clock. Even those of us prone to stay up waaay too late need at least some sleep. If some folks have opted out of Peace for sleep during the day, what about moving some of the daytime workshops a little further down the line of cabins so that workshops are not scheduled in the Peace lodge until after lunch? I was not aware there are unheated cabins at West River, but in early October, the chances are slim to none that an unheated common room in any of the cabins is going to be excessively chilly. I sleep like a log (not to mention snore like a chainsaw)and the sound, night-time or daytime has not been the reason I opted out of staying in the Peace lodge the past 2 years. One of two reasons I have opted out of staying in the Peace lodge the last couple of years, however, is it is impossible to get to my room or the shower during the day with out disrupting packed workshops that occur back-to-back and require impeccable timing on my part to get into and out of my room or the bathroom there between workshops. |

I'm looking forward to some wonderful late night music/song sessions in the Peace Cabin this year. I'll bet you are too. More and more people, though, want a quiet place to sleep and only eleven people have said they'd be willing to stay where the music goes on most of the night. We need at least 22. Will 12 more volunteer sleeping in the Peace Cabin (brownie points plus a small discount for those who take an upper berth)? If not, we'll have to move the late night sessions to Eiler's Dining Hall (the old dining hall where we do evening concerts). The music and good times will flourish in both places, but they are certainly less intimate and cozy. Interestingly enough, a lot of the musical night owls say they enjoy jamming and singing till the wee hours but do not feel they can sleep with the noise around them. Another has said he can sleep with the noise at night but cannot sleep with the noise from Peace Cabin Workshops in the AM. Cause of the problem: Our room assignments guru, Jennifer Woods, says there are not enough heated cabins to accommodate all who request quiet sleeping space, so we MUST have a near capacity crowd of sleepers at the Peace Cabin/ Please let me know if you and your companion(s) are willing to nod off with angelic voices, strings, and an occasional bongo for accompaniment. Deadline is September 8th-- the cay after labor day-- when I will pass the names and email addresses of volunteers to Jennifer. At that time she has to start arranging the cabins-- a Herculean task because of so many special needs, wants, and human relationships. Half the fun of the getaway is that she does such a good job of this! Zed's is a fine listening space with good food and a living room atmosphere. It is located at8225 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring easily reached by the Metro if need be and WE are the scheduled entertainment. The Linda Lieberman/David Olive Scholarship program was set up years ago (in memory of two great folks who went home from the Getaway to check on their animals on Saturday night and didn't return on Sunday, having perished when their car went off the road on the way home). The fund gets replenished each year through generous donations, through the silent auction we hold at the Getaway, and through the contributions collected at the Saturday night Mummer's play. Scholarships are based on need; you don't have to work a special job in return. To apply, you need to contact Charlie Baum (me), and we'll have a confidential chat on the telephone. Mudcatters can send me a private message, including your contact information. Sometimes, it takes me a day or two to notice I have a new message, but I'll get back to you. I know--we could make the whole program from workshops I have had to miss in the last four Getaways! One of my most unforgettable memories was a Chanties and Sea Songs workshop. There were about twenty people milling around and one baritone voice started up the lead line of a chanty. Instantly the whole room was filled and vibrating with the chorus, and the sound was amazing, like the Voice of Man rising up to the stars. Let's do that one again. The Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), and longtime Getaway-goers Kathie Mack and Lisa Null -- is ready for your ideas! This year's Getaway will be held October 2-5 at West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the same place we've been for the last several years, and it's a beautiful spot. If you'd like more information about the Getaway, visit www.fsgw.org, scroll down a bit, and click on "Getaway" in the left-hand column. This lists the specifics for last year's event, but of course this year's will be similar. Complete, up-to-date information -- including an application form -- will be available on the FSGW site soon. Or you can put "Getaway" into the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2-3 years, and you'll get more commentary than anyone could reasonably read. We have an exceptional lineup of Special Guests this year: CINDY KALLET and GREY LARSEN will bring their remarkable voices and many instruments; the SHORT SISTERS (Kim Wallach, Fay Baird, & Kate Seeger) will come together from their diverse home towns with their special brand of songs old and new; SHEILA KAY ADAMS AND THE SCOFFLAWS (Branson Raines and Dan Lewis) come from Western North Carolina with their authentic string band sound, stories, and more; JILL ROGOFF visits from Israel with wonderful Celtic songs and Jewish music; and TIM RADFORD will be here with lots of ballads and rousing maritime songs. All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops. We are now starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but that's hard to do until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do.
