Subject: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 15 May 15 - 10:54 AM Can anyone supply an ABC for this one? I have sheet music for it and a version from Ceolas that is not quite the one I'm looking for. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST Date: 15 May 15 - 11:25 AM gillymor, is it any relation to "My Ain Hoose"? There seems to be an ABC notation at http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=terrytraub.org/abc/JohnBainsSistersWeddingJ/0000 |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: Jack Campin Date: 15 May 15 - 11:49 AM That's a dance title thought up by "Foss Glendarroch", who- or what-ever that is. Is Gillymor after this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9YWaqwu_6w It's basically the same as "The Lords of Convention" ("The Bonnets of Bonny Dundee"). "John Bain's Sister's Wedding" is a different tune in a different mode, though with a somewhat similar rhythm and melodic shape. It's usually done as a jig. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: Jack Campin Date: 15 May 15 - 11:59 AM Aargh. That's not quite it. It's the Gaelic waltz "My Home": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-HbBOXslok There are lots of ABCs to sift through for that. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 15 May 15 - 12:48 PM Here is the waltz version I've been looking for by David Bromberg and company which I've been playing for a good long while. I saw that version you linked to Guest but you'll notice the abc is not included there. I also found the "John Bain's" jig versions that Jack alluded to and the "My Home" which was at Ceolas, and the A part is very similar but the B part is not. It's a fairly simple tune so I'm going to tell the folks I play with to learn it off the LP like I did a long time ago and write out the abc if they want it. This search did yield a very interesting tune that Jack Campin posted (?) at abc notation called "This is No' My Ain Hoose". Thanks all. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: Jack Campin Date: 15 May 15 - 01:23 PM Bromberg's version is just the standard Gaelic waltz "My Home", with some extra fiddle twiddles in the second part. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: Jack Campin Date: 15 May 15 - 03:03 PM Kerr didn't use the "My Ain Hoose" title for "John Bain's Sister's Wedding" (I just checked - I first learned the tune from that book 40 years ago). It presumably got there because some country dance organizer (Foss Glendarroch or T. Traub, whoever they are) wanted to use JBSW for a dance they'd invented called "My Ain Hoose". Nobody outside the twilight nightmare world of Scottish country dance would think the two tunes had anything to do with each other. T. Traub's chords are nuts. What is E major doing in there? You can do the whole tune on Am and G. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 16 May 15 - 07:49 AM Guest, the tune you posted doesn't sound related to the one I was looking for but it's fun to play and sounds kind of Breton. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST Date: 16 May 15 - 07:54 AM Sorry, gillymor. I hope someone comes through foryoy on this. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST Date: 16 May 15 - 07:55 AM And I hope someone fixes my fingers soon :-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: My Own House From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 16 May 15 - 08:19 AM Oh no, Guest, I got a couple of good new tunes out of this search. Thanks. If my musical comrades need the abc they can make it themselves. As I said, it's a fairly simple tune. |
