If you're into camping there's an excellent Old Time camp at Sacrewell Farm, near Peterborough August 7 - 16. Get details from Friends Of American Old Time Music And Dance, an excellent club for Old Time music, with lots of great players, extensive knowledge of tunes and a welcome for anybody who loves the music. You don't have to be a great player to have a LOT of fun. The camp is also great for kids - it's a farm museum with lots of activities and interest.

also...went to the Marquis of Granby in Waddingham last night (second Sundays) - mainly Irish and English tunes with fiddle, whistles, gutiars, accordion and harmonicas plus a fab singer - and a couple of banjos . All styles are welcome! Won't be there next month due to holidays but can recommend it - a lovely group of people.

Also "Caister folk sessions"

The Ashby sesssion is mixed songs and tunes

The Caister session is tunes only(mostly English)6 pm to 8 pm beginners

8pm onwards more experienced

The son of Epworth Folk, not in Epworth.. seems to be getting into a rhythm now, alternating Wednesday nights between The William in Haxey and The Wheatsheaf in Belton. It was Haxey last night. A good night with a nice varied mix of music. There are no musical stipulations and run in a similar line to Owston Ferry, where the leaflets say "anything so long as it is acoustic." That said, Thursdays are not that easy at present so I haven't been to Ferry Folk since the beginning of the year.

The session and singarounds in North Lincolnshire (and towards Doncaster) are excellent generally. I find most of them a good fusion between traditional tunes and both traditional and contemporary songs by people with guitars. In fact, the only issue I have with the area is an old couple who seem to get to many local venues and unfortunately, their personal hygiene, which I'm sure they don't notice and it doesn't make them bad people, puts people off to the extent my wife asked if I didn't mind leaving early as it was making her feel queasy.

I'm not sure what people mean by "country and western" when referring to the wonderful nights held locally. I assume they mean anything American or '50s pop songs, both of which add to a varied night. I heard someone play some brilliant Robert Johnson blues the other week, celebrating the 100th year since the birth of Mr Johnson, and someone else moan in the bar about "country" music. They amused me by stating that the singer who noted the 100th year since Ewan MacColl's birth and singing one of his songs was singing "traditional" songs.

I sing unaccompanied myself, when I sing at all, but I love listening to the session tunes in moderation. The odd song breaks it up nicely, and if it is a modern song, all the more so.

The North Lincolnshire people are friendly, inclusive and with a couple of silly exceptions, don't get hung up over the subjective word "folk." Compare that to where I used to live, where the folk police made a nice night out a bore and both the original poster and I are lucky to live round here.

Wroot is indeed near Doncaster, broadly in the same area as Epworth and Owston Ferry.

Hello Badmajon, yes Wroot is near Doncaster and is the most awkward place to get to as most of the roads in are single track. However, it is good as Monday meetings hit quite a few Bank holidays. No problem with banjo playing locally. Hubby plays tenor and five string as do others who visit us as Ferry Folk. Hope the birth goes well and you enjoy your English Folk though you will find many groups play quite a bit of Country and Western.

I've been scouring the internet and building a list- sometimes its tough b/c these things cease to be but they are still listed- but I've come up with a list of front runners. I've come to terms with the fact I'll proabably have to travel at least an hour to get to any of them, but I do live in the middle of nowhere (Digby village) so even getting to Lincoln takes 30 minutes.

Obviously the closest is the Dog and Bone, 1st Sunday. Lincoln.
Second might be the 2nd sunday session in Sibsey at the White Hart.
Then we have the north lincolnshire sessions in Scunthorpe at the malt shovel (3rd sunday) and then the settlement in Caistor on the last sunday.

Can the mudcatters here confirm these are still going on?

I'm really excited to have found these! I will be attending as soon as possible, expecting baby any time now. I would love especially to learn more about British folk music, I wonder how the banjo works with those? That'll be interesting to see/hear.

Murpholly, is Wroot near Doncaster? That's all I could find.

For all the "locals" Wroot meets the first Monday of every month including Bank Holidays. We usually go and although it is generally done on the normal folk play/sing around there is a great deal of jamming if folk can agree a key. Owston Ferry Folk also has a lot of jamming and meets on the third Thursday of every month - again by the round but they usually try to drown my singing out! Everyone welcome and we have quite a variety of instruments including pipes, accordians, melodians, fiddle, etc. etc. etc.

Badmajon - 'Catter 'Banjoflower' runs the Malt Shovel Session in Ashby, Scunthorpe which I go to, and he attends the Settlement session in Caistor which is run by 'Catter 'Rockhen'.

There is a fledgling new session in Wroot once a month that a few lads from The Ukrainian session go to, and a lot closer to Lincoln. I went the other month.

Where are you in Lincolnshire? There's a regular Old Time jam in Beeston, Nottingham that I believe is good, though I've never been.
Every Monday night there's a folk jam in Doncaster at the Ukrainian Club that usually has some Old Time tunes if I'm there - I play clawhammer and some fiddle.

Checkout the Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance who (by coincidence) started in Lincolnshire and hold an annual festival in Gainsborough around the middle of February.

There's a few members (including ones relatively local to the area) who are Mudcat members and will post from time to time.

There are a few who go regularly from Dinnington way who lead on lots of trad stuff with guitars, melodeons etc. Like most sessions, a bit varied. I haven't been for a wee while myself to be fair.

Most of the jam sessions I enjoy tend to be going further from Lincoln anyway and into South Yorkshire, and I'm not sure the op's visa extends to there.. 😎

I've only been to OF a couple of times, several years ago. It wasn't a jam then, more of a sing-around/play-around. I felt very unwelcome and never bothered again, Epworth is much more my cup o'tea.

Matt, I don't know about Old-Time jams, but there are plenty of folk sessions:-

3rd Sunday (usually) of the month - The Malt Shovel, Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe.
Last Sunday - The Settlement, Caistor Market Place.
3rd Wednesday - The Blue Bell, Gringley (technically in Notts, but only just!)

First Sunday of the month at the Dog and Bone, John St, off Monks rd, Lincoln from about 3pm there's a "folk" session. Often includes blues, jazz and Old Time - just depends who turns up! The guy to look out for is called Pete Gostelow - he makes and plays banjo's etc. Good luck! D
