Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 01 Jun 15 - 01:41 PM I'm with you, Dan. I have disliked the sound of the Beatles since they first hit the charts. However, I think they composed a few melodies which sound nice if done by somebody else - somebody with a good voice - or on an instrument. Here's a bit of lore. Long ago, Roy Orbison opened for a little-known band called the Beatles somewhere in England, and the English audience liked him so much he did 14 encores. It's on Wikipedia, so it must be true. (I believe it; it's too lovely not to believe.) Orbison wrote a teenybopper song called "Oobie Doobie," and as soon as I heard it, I knew where early Beatles came from. |

The Beatles and the Stones- - - yeah yeah yeah -- of course later I moved on to Pink Floyd, John Mayall, Cream etc etc (and I never left my folk roots, before or after or evermore!) But for my generation, a Beatles tune strikes a chord in my memory, I remember the first time I heard 'She Loves You' and 'Please Please Me' and I will never forget the party I was at when a medical student arrived with the newly released 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' --- sigh---! |

To this day if I don't recognize a Beatles tune when it comes on, fine. I'll listen to it and enjoy it. I am old enough (too old !!) to have been around when the Beatles first started. Coming from the North West ( England that is) we had heard of them even before they came on TV on our North West News. Never really took to them then. But recently I unearthed a couple of old LP.s that must of been my sister's that somehow got in my collection. I have found myself liking some of their stuff. "While my guitar gently weeps" is one such. Another is Chains. An unusual track for them was "Till there was you". Yeah Yeah Yeah the boys did good. Cheers MikeL2 |

Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: Jim Carroll Date: 07 Jun 15 - 02:37 AM " I am sick of the beatles" As a 1960s refugee from Beatles/football infested Liverpool, I couldn't agree more. No problem with the lads themselves - seemed nice enough bunch and talented - to a degree, but nothing special until the hype-machine got going (saw them a couple of times at The Aintree Institute before all the fuss). Resented them bitterly when they took over The Cavern (best jazz club I've ever been to), and turned it into a palace for the bland and brainless. Found their music pleasantly inoffensive, but nothing special. But that ****** overstated hype - something created to keep our minds off the fact that there was no work and if you wanted to stay alive, you had to move South. They disappeared for a time - as happens with pop-music creations, and were resurrected when the modern industry ran out of ideas - as also happens (more and more nowadays with an industry that has less and less imagination) Subsequent visits back home have been depressing - a place living on a past that wasn't much to write home about when it was the present - "historic Beatles Tours" to Penny Lane - "The Cavern Museum" and that god-awful 'Yellow Submarine' tat at John Lennon (for ******'* sake) Airport Liverpool is a great city with with a fascinating history and wonderful, generous, friendly people - pity people picture it as a place with a population of 4. "Eleanor Rigby" We....lll not too bad as songs go - had much more going for it than today's gibberish Peggy Seeger used it as a basis for one of her songs (All Those Murdered People) for the 1968 Festival of Fools, but was forced to remove it from the programme songbook on the advice of her solicitors - not far enough removed from the original. Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 07 Jun 15 - 08:17 AM Well, in The Beatles defence they were- when they emerged - head and shoulders ahead of anything else in the UK ( don't talk about The Stones with their weak singer and uninspiring cover versions, and even when they got going as songwriters a lot of their material was just cynically milking the "bad boys" image that Oldham had worked hard to create) I think a good way of accessing a act's worth is to see how they were viewed by their contemporaries, and The Beatles were held in awe by almost the whole world of pop/rock music. |

I remember when I thought the Beatles had a sophisticated sound, as typified by that song's ridiculing of the bubble-gum music of the Beach Boys. But "California Girls" sounds much less offensive to me now than "Back in the USSR." |
Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 08 Jun 15 - 12:09 PM Do you think the song ridiculed the Beach Boys? Yes, of course, it's the obvious antecedent to "Back in the USSR," in both the title and the opening lyrics. Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 10 Jun 15 - 02:08 AM Before my time too. In truth I can barely remember the Beatles either as I was only a wee kid when they were active. Seemingly McCartney wrote the song in India and had the song as a straight take on "Back In The USA" and played it to others there on the acoustic. It must have been the main verses as Mike Love of the Beach Boys claims it was he himself who then suggested a bit be added about all the different Soviet girls - which McCartney later did and added the Beach Boy harmonies etc. Yes it is parodying Berry and the Beach Boys but I think it was just a bit of fun and flattery more than actual ridicule. From everything I've read both Lennon and McCartney were inspired by Berry and loved the Beach Boys music. http://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/back-in-the-ussr/ |

Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST Date: 10 Jun 15 - 08:30 PM It's not just the Beatles. All that pop music that I once thought was sublimely beautiful now sounds like garbage. It's like Miley Cyrus but without the strip show. Even at the time I knew there was usually only one good song on an album. Those hit songs, such as Suite Judy Blue Eyes, now seem just barely tolerable, and the rest of the stuff on each album makes me want to run out of the room screaming. By contrast, folk and folkish singers from that time sound as good now as they did back then. And older pop music, from the 30's and 40's, holds up pretty well too. |
