Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 01 Jun 15 - 01:41 PM I'm with you, Dan. I have disliked the sound of the Beatles since they first hit the charts. However, I think they composed a few melodies which sound nice if done by somebody else - somebody with a good voice - or on an instrument. Here's a bit of lore. Long ago, Roy Orbison opened for a little-known band called the Beatles somewhere in England, and the English audience liked him so much he did 14 encores. It's on Wikipedia, so it must be true. (I believe it; it's too lovely not to believe.) Orbison wrote a teenybopper song called "Oobie Doobie," and as soon as I heard it, I knew where early Beatles came from. |

Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: Gallus Moll Date: 01 Jun 15 - 03:41 PM guess youse were all the wrong age group when The Beatles emerged - too young or more likely too old! The Beatles and the Stones- - - yeah yeah yeah -- of course later I moved on to Pink Floyd, John Mayall, Cream etc etc (and I never left my folk roots, before or after or evermore!) But for my generation, a Beatles tune strikes a chord in my memory, I remember the first time I heard 'She Loves You' and 'Please Please Me' and I will never forget the party I was at when a medical student arrived with the newly released 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' --- sigh---! |
Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST,Guest Date: 01 Jun 15 - 03:57 PM Saw them on an early evening programme (made by Granada for the north) when they were just starting and remember thinking. These lads are pretty good - wonder if they will make it? They did for me - and millions of others. |
Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jun 15 - 03:59 PM I will not hear a word against the Beatles. But if I hear one word against Carly Simon you're going to need a surgeon. |
Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: Anne Lister Date: 01 Jun 15 - 04:29 PM There are quite a few musicians and composers I'm happy not to listen to but I don't feel the need to name them on Mudcat. Your musical tastes are your own business entirely ...what's the point of starting a totally negative thread? |
Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST Date: 01 Jun 15 - 05:18 PM "Of course later I moved on to Pink Floyd..." Ah a lunatic on the grass? More seriously, I think everyone I knew in my 70s part of growing up went through a Pink Floyd phase... |

Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jun 15 - 11:33 PM I realize this thread has a hidden tongue in it, and I also grant that many musicians much, much better than I love the Beatles but as someone mentioned above when the Beatles came to town I was too old. One had to be about 14 years old to get hooked. For me, their first five or so songs lost me, i.e. I wanna hol your han', she loves you ja ja ja. etc. Come on. To this day if I don't recognize a Beatles tune when it comes on, fine. I'll listen to it and enjoy it. But when it has those distinctive five syllables per line and that heavy bouncing beat, I'm gone. Leapin' lizards! |

Subject: RE: I am sick of the beatles From: GUEST Date: 02 Jun 15 - 07:29 PM When I saw this thread I wondered whether I'm sick of the Beatles too. So I forced myself to listen to Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club album. It was unbearable. I kept asking myself, "What did I ever like about this?" And then I remembered having done the same thing in the late 70's, with the same reaction. |
