I see from an announcements page
"Ashley Stephen HUTCHINGS Musician and Songwriter. For services to
Folk Music." awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) he is quoted as saying " I'm obviously very proud of this honour but it's England's musical tradition that's being recognised as much as me"

It is a bit of a mystery, though, why Kathryn gets an OBE, which is "higher rank" than MBE, where Ashley Hutchings and the Waterson:Carthy's reside. Not that I begrudge her getting the recognition in the slightest ...

These 'Member Officer Commander Knight/Dame' distinctions often seem a bit arbitrary, don't they? But it is the recognition that the person deserves to be honoured by having their achievements and contributions publicly acknowledged that is the point of the exercise.

Kathryn does hold regular teach-ins and workshops to ensure the revival of Northumbrian Pipe music. To mostly the youth of her county. She certainly is engaged with her community.

It's a nice surprise when British - and in this case English - traditional music gets official recognition.

Just a thought, but could the fact that kathryn T founded a charity to help young musicians and has raised over £100,000 for that charity have anything to do with it? As well as all the teaching she has done over many years.
