Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ' the gift ' from The Kings Singers From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Feb 11 - 10:24 AM I have looked at a track list for the album "A Little Christmas Music" by The King's Singers, and the only track with the word "gift" in the title is SIMPLE GIFTS. Lyrics are posted here: Lyr Add: SIMPLE GIFTS (Joseph Brackett, Jr.), but I don't know whether the King's Singers sing all 3 verses. (I don't think I'll e-mail Mario since the request is 11 years old.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ' the gift ' from The Kings Singers From: RunrigFan Date: 14 Feb 11 - 12:14 PM A gift we deliver, a gift we receive... In the gift we deliver, in the gift we receive, is the living spirit Mary did conceive, the royal gift of love incandescent flame Is given to all mankind in His name. Joy, joy, it is our true delight To give and receive on this wondrous night. A boy child to Mary is born And His light will shine on beyond the dawn. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ' the gift ' from The Kings Singers From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Feb 11 - 06:30 PM So, RunrigFan, what do you know about the lyrics you just posted? Were they sung by the King's Singers? On what album? What is the title and author? Lyrics posted without context aren't very useful. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ' the gift ' from The Kings Singers From: Jim Dixon Date: 15 Feb 11 - 12:35 AM OK, I get it now: The lyrics that RunrigFan posted do fit to the tune of SIMPLE GIFTS, but I didn't recognize them. They are not the lyrics I am familiar with, and it looks like they have never been posted at Mudcat before. Google books doesn't find them. I'd like to know where they came from (I mean, where the King's Singers got them). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Gift (from The King's Singers) From: GUEST,Good-Shit Date: 09 May 13 - 02:41 AM This song is from the album "Best Carols 100 /titled 4-03. The Gift (Simple Gifts)- EMI Classics / released 2007 11.15 Warner music korea. I think this song "The gift" is different from a song titled "The Gift To Be Simple" from the album "Simple Gifts" released 2010. The lyrics that RunrigFan posted do fit to "The Gift" from the album "Best Carols 100" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Gift (from The King's Singers) From: GUEST,Julia L Date: 09 May 13 - 08:58 PM The original lyrics to Simple Gifts are nothing like those posted 'T is the gift to be simple "t is the gift to be free "t is the gift to come down where we ought to be And when we find ourselves in the place just right 'T will be in the valley of love and delight When true simplicity is gained To bow and to bend we sh'ant be ashamed To turn, turn will be our delight Till by turning , turning, we come 'round right The Shakers were a religious sect in the early 19th century who received inspiration by singing and dancing. This particular song was "received" by Brother John Brackett who lived at the Shaker village in Alfred Maine circa 1840. It was transcribed and the transcription was found by the compsr Aaron Copland who used it as his theme for "Appalachian Spring" (Which by the way has to do with a water source, not the season) The melody became famous and was subsequently given new lyrics by English songwriter Sydney Carter in "Lord of the Dance" which in turn was used by Irish entertainer Michael Flatley in his dance extravaganza of the same name. Apparently someone else has tried their hand at making Christmas lyrics for this classic tune best- Julia |
