I know I am living in the dark ages (ha, ha) but I have a large collection of music and movie videos - (on VHS format.) Although I do have many DVD's as well, I have about 150 VHS tapes of various titles (some music & most are movies.) It is harder and harder to find VHS to buy anymore as they are not being made of course, but I can usually find used videos at thrift shops and libraries for sale.
The 2nd hand used record shops near me do not even sell VHS now - just used vinyl records and DVD's.

I was wondering if anyone else still has a large collection of VHS videos and do you watch them anymore? Most of my friends only have DVD's and do not even own a VHS player :-)
I actually like videos and have a few titles that were never released on DVD's.

There are some that I want to sell because I have some duplicates or not interested in the movie anymore - such as a 10 video box set collection of the program from the 1960's police TV show called,
"Dragnet" (police TV program of 10 videos (2 episodes per video).

I guess VHS will be pretty hard to sell though, so I will probably donate some of them.

So I was just curious if many others of you reading this still watch movies on VHS format?

150 tapes at 3 hours each = 450 hours
At two hours a day ... five days a week.
Two full years of stuff no-one, but you, cares about.

They were precious on first viewing to you.

Hi, Lin -
I have a VHS player connected to my video stuff, but I have to admit I haven't even turned it on in years. I can't quite bring myself to throw out those old movies, but I really should. I have plenty to watch on DVD, and the video quality is so much better with an HDMI connection to my digital TV.
I got rid of my analog TVs years ago.

There is a thrift store near here that carries a lot of them. We just donated the entire series of "Highlander" that used to belong to my brother. I have a few left too. But I don't watch them anymore.

My two video players... both high end Sony Beta and VHS.. died a couple of years ago. I had just made plans to copy some of the special stuff to CD-DVD. I can't bring myself to toss all the old tapes... just in case I can find one.

I have a pal who loves them. He particularly loves films from his youth and I try to get them for him from op-shops. Mostly not available on DVD.
He's half blind, so the lower quality doesn't matter much, and he likes to be able to stop them when something he wants to watch on TV comes on, and just start the video again afterwards.
He also gets rabid about the 'zoning' on DVDs because we get many imports here, and his machine only plays zone 4 (oceania,) and he can't see the tiny print on the cover.

I like you had loads of stuff on VHS.

I sorted out what I wanted to keep and I converted them onto first DVD's and more recently on to BluRay.

The ones I didn't want I got rid by various means after asking friends and family etc if they wanted any of them.

Whether I will ever watch them all......who knows but we are watching quite a lot these days as we find that there is little that interests us on TV.

given the overwhelming improved quality of DVD and BD, I rarely will
watch VHS tapes. Still there are films and other material on VHS which have not been released on DVD, so those are worth keeping.
About Region Codes on DVD (Zone on BD(Blu-ray)), many inexpensive DVD players are available which will play ALL regions (see the website videohelp). There also are multi-zone bd players, a few inexpensive ones, more at higher price point. I've had poor results from a number of inexpensive BD players, so if you buy one be sure the seller has a free return/exchange policy.

I've got some irreplaceable stuff on VHS that you cannot get on DVD, like videos of fiddle workshops and videos of ancient never repeated music TV programs, like "Echoes Of America" and Aly Bain's Down Home fiddle programs.

If that material is irreplaceable, get it transferred to a digital format while the tapes are still playable. Then get the digital copies backed up. Then in future, if necessary, it can transferred again to another new format.

If you have personal items or recordings that haven't found their way to YouTube you can convert VHS files to digital, edit out commercials, then burn them to DVD. You need a video card in your computer and a conversion box (i.e., Canopus) to connect your VCR player to the computer and Roxio or other easy editing and recording software to process the files.

I am probably the world's worst person when it comes to understanding tech. things such as transferring VHS to the computer. I don't have any type of equipment to do this anyway. My VHS player is an older model and not close to where my computer is - and I do not know how to set up cables, etc. & all the various needed things to transfer a VHS tape to a computer or to make it into a DVD.
I could take 3 buses one way to a electronics store I guess - but just seems like it would be too much trouble once I would get all the needed stuff home to do the transferring.

Yikes, no one to help me - I am on my own and although I have read a little about how to do this - tech. stuff it almost like a foreign language to me.
To other people it probably is the most simple thing to do.

My VHS player does have a side where you can also play DVD's but it does not do any copying - it is an older model which I got at a thrift store.

Hi Lin

I "cheated" when converting my VHS Tapes to video. I bought a VHS to DVD converter which does it for you without having any cables etc to bother about. I think they still sell them.

Nowadays anything I record is on to two Panasonic BluRay recorders on which I can easily edit anything I wish: eg TV Commercials etc.

I bought a Panasonic VHS/DVD player/recorder a couple of years ago, still works OK and I can copy VHS to DVD and vice verse if I want to.

My DVD player also plays VHS tapes, so I rather have the best of both worlds. I also have a good VHS player as a backup, though it's not hooked up to my TV.

Back in the '80s my late husband (Mudcat's Curmudgeon) and I owned a video shop, Cinematheque, in Portsmouth, NH that specialized in foreign films, classic films, and totally off-the-wall films (Kenneth Anger, John Waters and David Lynch before they became mainstream, indie). We sold most of the stock, but kept some. Plus a fellow Tom later worked with deaccession end his VHS tapes to us as he converted to DVD.

I have an incredible collection of VHS tapes. (I also seem to have a huge collection of DVDs.) You're right. Some stuff will never be on DVD. I had "The Last Polka" (Schmenge Brothers mocumentary) converted to DVD.

Anyway, I've been investigating selling some of the VHS tapes, probably in related lots. Maybe at eBay. If you're interested, join Mudcat and PM (message) me. They're taking up so much room and I'm selling a lot of stuff because, quite honestly, I need the money.

Dave Hanson, I've got to investigate a unit like you have. There's a lot I'd like to convert.

We have a similar machine to Dave Hanson's - Panasonic - plays and records both VHS and DVD and can convert VHS to DVD as well as being a Freeview receiver for digital TV. I had good intentions of converting all of our VHS tapes to DVD, but not done half of them yet! The main ones I wanted to do were the school productions (you were allowed to video your own kids then!) and other stuff such as amateur dramatic productions I've been in, my parents' golden wedding, etc: not things you can buy off the shelf commercially.
We did have an evening of great laughs the night before my daughter's wedding watching the VHS of her 14-year-old dance class concert - along with several of her friends in the same show - especially guffaws at the wrong moves!
Much the same scenario with the USB turntable - all those vinyl LPs and cassette tapes I was going to convert to CDs - but now they tell me the CDs won't last anyway! And not enough hours in the day to do the job or listen to the results......

Do you by any chance have a VHS of a 1973 movie called,
"Where the Lillies Bloom?" (No very famous actresses or actors in this movie as far as I know.)

American movie about an orphaned family of kids from 5 to 14 years old, who have to struggle to live by themselves after their father died and try to keep it known from the authorities.
They lived in Appalachia and buried their father on their land so the authorizes did know of his death and that the kids were on their own as the mother had already died when the movie started.

Great movie but for whatever reason never released on DVD (other then people doing it on their own) but not released on DVD by the movie company/industry itself.

Also great music in the movie which I have from the LP also called,
"Where the Lillies Bloom"

There's a French "feel good" film I'm trying to track down,the English title is "Blue Country".

So many video tapes that the space they take up is a problem, and haven't touched them in many years. Kept thinking I'd convert them to DVD, but now I should just get rid of them. Probably only a few more years before the DVD's are set aside for something else.

We look after a special needs teenager who loves cbeebees videos and likes to stop,start rewind them and drops or throws them, so we are always looking for them. Charity shops don't do them anymore, but strangely it seems to have led to 2nd hand copies being well overpriced on the internet.
