Subject: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Jeri Date: 30 Nov 99 - 05:55 PM I just received an e-mail from Wally Macnow of Camsco, and I haven't seen anything on the 'Cat yet. He has sold Camsco Music. So does anyone want to guess which Mudcatter bought it? (Yeah, I know who dunnit, but enjoy being a pain sometimes.) I thank Wonderful Wally for creating Camsco and making it such a great traditional music resource. I wish him all the best in future endeavors, and hope to run into him from time to time.

Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Bill D Date: 30 Nov 99 - 06:01 PM well, I know too, but I think it's best to wait for an official announcement |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Jeri Date: 30 Nov 99 - 06:13 PM Aaack, Bill, I thought an e-mail from Wally was an official announcement. (He sent it to everyone on Camsco's mailing list.) If I screwed up, I apologise - big time! OK, everybody, never mind. I'm not gonna tell anyway - let the rumors fly. Let the suspense build. Let me shut up before I manage to get the other foot in my mouth... |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Áine Date: 30 Nov 99 - 06:29 PM Oh, Jeri, I don't think you need to keep still any longer. I checked the Camsco website and the address shown is 28 Powell Street, Greenwich, CT. Hmmmm, isn't that D... Oops, don't want to spoil the surprise!! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Wally Macnow Date: 30 Nov 99 - 07:30 PM Hi Folks, Camsco Has A New Owner. That will teach me to be slow in notifying you all but there are lots of pieces at this end that I've been dealing with today. The new owner is (ta da) our own Dick Greenhaus. The sale was effective today and I hope you will show him the same courtesy and support that you have shown to me. Dick is the creator of the Digital Tradition and has been a supporter of traditional folk music in its many forms over the course of more than four decades I guess. The Camsco site, www.camsco.com, will remain active as will the links to the Mudcat. The 800 number is ringing at my place at the moment and will until we can get the number to ring at Dick's so I'll be taking orders for him and forwarding them. I haven't been very much of a contributor here in the recent past but now that some of the work associated with the transfer is complete, I'll be back to annoy and mystify. I wish Dick all the luck in the world and hope you will all help him make his new venture a success. Thank you everyone. Wally

Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Sandy Paton Date: 30 Nov 99 - 09:22 PM A worthy successor, Wally. I'm glad the two of you were able to work it out. I guess a few of you saw the "watch for an important announcement" I stuck onto a note last week, but I was trying to be careful not to let any cats escape confinement. Here's to a vigorous continuation of the fine Camsco tradition. (Hip, Hip...) Congratulations, Dick. That's a beautiful new baby. Now try to get some sleep! (Hah!) Sandy |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Susan A-R Date: 30 Nov 99 - 09:46 PM So, Wally, who do I send menus to now? And what are you up to? I may have missed something at the top of the post, jumped to your spot as I'm off to write another menu. so what's up?? Susan |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: _gargoyle Date: 30 Nov 99 - 10:16 PM Wonderful! Wonderful!

Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Art Thieme Date: 30 Nov 99 - 10:20 PM Success to you both! Art |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Rick Fielding Date: 30 Nov 99 - 10:39 PM It's OK Dick, you don't have to cover for me anymore. I'll fess up. Yup, I bought Camsco! Good deal too. 32 bucks down and 50 a week for the next 124 years. A few minor changes. We're only selling rap music from now on..oh and those old bootlegs of Sandy Paton when he used to co-write with Dylan. Seriously, congratulations, good luck, and have fun. Rick |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: lamarca Date: 30 Nov 99 - 10:58 PM Just in time for Christmas! Best of luck, Dick - it's in good hands. And thank you very much to Wally for starting the wonderful black hole into which more than one of our dollars and dimes have been sucked over the past few years! It's been great to have a place to go to find those "hidden gems" of small label folk recordings. |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Dec 99 - 02:07 AM Hey, best of luck to both Wally and Dick! Now, I've been wondering - what's the origin of the name "Camsco"? All I can think of is that it's the "mac" in Wally's name, spelled backwards. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: KathWestra Date: 01 Dec 99 - 12:52 PM Joe, you're a perceptive fellow. CAM is Wally's last name spelled backward, and SCO is the first three letters of his wife Berta Scott-Macnow's last name.
Thanks, Wally, for this labor of love over the last few years. I have joked on occasion that Wally should offer direct deposit of paychecks into his Camsco account. Ewan MacColl's radio ballads, and countless other recordings have come my way thanks to you. Many are by folks I might not ever have known about if it weren't for Camsco (like the Quebecois music from Wally & Berta's adopted state of Vermont -- good stuff!) The good news is that this venture is in another pair of good hands. Don't worry Dick. We'll continue to support Camsco! (You really should investigate that direct deposit thing.) Good luck! |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Dec 99 - 12:57 PM I'm at a loss to know whether to say "Congratulations" to both Wally and Dick or "Geez, I'm sorry" to both of them. Its great news both ways for the rest of us. Thank you both! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Sandy Paton Date: 01 Dec 99 - 01:25 PM Yeah, Rick. And Zimmerman always took all the credit (and the royalties!). Sandy |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Bruce O. Date: 02 Dec 99 - 02:49 PM Congratulations Dick, I hope you can show some profit from your work. I also hope we will see a lot more from Wally here. He's got a good store of folk songs and knows a lot about real folk songs and music. |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Wally Macnow Date: 02 Dec 99 - 06:09 PM Well, here I am. Thanks to all of you for the good wishes and for the voices of support for Dick. It's been a lot of work and a lot of fun. Joe, good guess. Spaw, they'd both be in order just at different times and it changes day to day-- mostly on the up side.

Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: dick greenhaus Date: 02 Dec 99 - 11:16 PM Somehow, I suspect that owning a folk record distribution company is something like the old cartoon, in which the little boy is glaring at a shaggy dog, and saying: "Let's get this straight. You're my dog; I'm not your boy" I think it will be fun, though. |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: Bill D Date: 02 Dec 99 - 11:59 PM shortest shaggy dog joke I ever heard.... |
Subject: RE: Camsco Has A New Owner From: karen k Date: 03 Dec 99 - 01:05 AM Dick, CAMSCO couldn't be in better hands. Best of luck. Hope to be able to send some busines your way. Are you going to keep the same name? k |
