I'm looking at possible songs recalling the UK fishing industry in times past.

I heard someone - I think it was Barry & Ingrid Temple sing 'Hold the Lantern High' which the internet tells me was written by Steve Evans as an opener for Tom Haddway's play 'Bless Thee, Jackie Madison' and recorded by the band Crooked Oak in 1976.

Any offers?

Unfortunately the YouTube video was taken down due to infringement of copyright. That said, I'm not really sure whet you're after.

I think I have most of the words for this but I'm stuck with the first line of the first verse. Can anyone help please?

Trevor, would you post a few lines of the lyrics you are sure of? Thank you.

I have the LP of Crooked Oak on which the track appears but nothing at present on which to play it. Have you tried Googling Tom Hadaway or "God Bless Thee Jackie Madison" to see if the words are anywhere there?
Otherwise I'll try for you one I acquire the means of playing the album.
BTW Steve Evans lives out in Jamaica or somewhere like that these days but he is on Facebook.

Thanks for that Dave - I've tried Googling everything, but I will have a go at contacting Steve via FB.

Guest# - here are the words I have:

HOLD THE LANTERN HIGH
Hold the lantern high lad,
Hold the lantern high,
Catch your daddy's eye laddie
Catch your daddy's eye.

????????????,
Many there must weep,
Say a prayer for those who share
The grief that they keep

There's none but us to rue his loss,
If he should not come home,
They're safe in bed, and do not fuss,
It's all the same to them

Do not fear for you will hear
The shout across the bay
Whether far or near, they will not fear
Your lantern lights the way

Safe on shore he's home once more,
To sea he'll soon return,
Whether far or near, he will not fear,
As long as lanterns burn.

Cheers!

Trevor, I just tripped over the following:

https://mainlynorfolk.info/folk/records/aldridgegoldsmith.html

Please note that the title may be 'Hold the Lantern' and it was co-authored by 'Barrie Temple, Steve Evans'

I'm guessing it's the song you're looking for.

(Thanks for the lyrics, btw.)

I'll post this and go look further.

Trevor:
I believe that elusive first line is "Cullercoats Sands are cold and bare"...
A grand song...!

Yes, Guest#, that's the clip that I lifted the words from, and Moorley Man, I think you're right! I've sent a message to Steve Evans - I'll let you know the outcome. In the meantime, thanks for all your help everyone.

Thanks for this. Barrie & Ingrid are currently performing with Jim Mageean as a trio called 'JIB', who are performing at South Shields and Newcastle (at least) next month. I look forward to seeing them again!
