In the Fiddlers Fake book, (FFB) there is melody and chords for an old march called "Marching Down Broadway." Right now, my FFB is in a cupboard that's stuck. But I've printed the melody out for piano playing, so that's good.

I've been writing parts for a full arrangement, but I'd like to know more about the song. I've checked Lester Levy, Duke U and the Library of Congress for it - no soap.

If you have the FFB handy, would you see what it says about the origin of "Marching down Broadway"? (It may just have a list of recordings.) And if anybody knows anything else about this song, I'd like to know.

Googling "Marching down Broadway" produces many references to a modern compilation, arr. John Moss, that starts with '76 Trombones', so that's no help. Don't go that route.

All it says in the FFB is Polka and Old-Time. There are no recordings listed with the tune, and nothing in the Index of Alternate Titles. I don't know anything more about this tune myself. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I thought you'd at least like to know what's on the FFB page.

Thank you, Zhenyz and Snail. That tells me what I need to know.

I have written a bass line and some harmony for it, and also a "piccolo" part, ala 'Star and Stripes Forever."

In case you aren't familiar with it, I will post a link to that beloved piccolo part.

Here it is. There's only 26 seconds of talk, then the solo is at 2:20.

One 4th of July, I was in the Denver airport, and a man was playing piano for the crowd, which was ignoring him completely. He played "Star and Stripes Forever," and as I walked by, I whistled the piccolo part. He looked over and grinned - happy to know somebody noticed his music.
