In a current BS thread, someone complained of problems opening threads.
Dave the Gnome suggested, "Try using either awe.mudcat.org or etta.mudcat.org, Steve. They are direct servers rather than a load balancer."

I wonder if Dave or anyone else could explain what this means and how it works please?

There are multiple servers at work at mudcat central. Look at the upper left corner of the screen and beside "The Mudcat Cafe" you will see a small word - "awe" is in view right now. If one server is acting sluggish you can try hitting a different server by putting the name in the url (http://awe.mudcat.org or http://etta.mudcat.org) to try hitting a different server.

If the load balancer and both servers are working properly, choosing a particular server is a badly loaded lottery - 50% chance you'll get the more busy one one, vs. 100% chance of getting the less busy one.

That's why we don't publish the names of our servers. We've done that in the past, and it has caused an imbalanced load on our servers. And when servers are changed, links to the old servers become inoperative. We had a time when well-meaning people were instructing others to link to ragtime.mudcat.org, which was the best-known server at the time. So, we ended up with a lot of links to ragtime - and none of them work now.

If Mudcat is down, sometimes those individual server links will still work. That doesn't happen all that often - but it did happen last night.
