Some friends are off on a river cruise with Show of Hands. We spent a happy half hour on the way to Faversham folk club thinking who we could put up with for several nights entertainment in the folk world - and what would entice us to such a venture.
Any thoughts

Probably Greg Stephens of this parish from the Boat Band - check out the steam driven boat on their homepage. I saw that boat on the Stroudwater 2 weeks ago.

Come to think of it I would choose the whole band, because the three of them play Cajun, Americana and English music plus who knows what else. And they love sessions. And they play for dancing.

The same band for three nights needs versatility. And I might even get the hang of Zydeco on the cruise.

My wife and I took a Hawaii cruise with Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen. They did two concerts for us, and we had a singaround every night. And it was a nice chance to get to know them.

Arlo Guthrie used to do a Mississippi River trip every year, but I don't see any mention of cruises on his Website now. That would have been a good trip.

It seems a bit incongruous to take a luxury cruise with a folk musician, but we sure enjoyed the Gillette/Mangsen cruise.

I believe Tom Paxton has done some, including up the Alaskan coast, and Archie Fisher in the Caribbean.
There are always good musicians on the National Trust for Scotland ones. I went on one about 1999, and we had Anne Lorne Gillies, focussing on the songs of St Kilda, 2 members of the former "Scotland the What", Eddie McGuire (flute) and Rhona Mackay (concert harp), and Paul Anderson (fiddle) as well as a piper, and music for ceilidh dancing. In more recent times, they have had people like Sheena Wellington and Siobhan Miller.

Of course, that's the more expensive way to do it.
We always have "musical cruises" on the Union Canal as part of Linlithgow Folk Festival, two one hour trips with local duo, Cockleroy. And I have been on a couple of other Union Canal trips where we ourselves brought our own food, drink, instruments and songs. Other such trips take place on Loch Lomond and the River Forth.

Would be lovely to have the funds to go on a musical cruise! I was longing to go on the Steve & Cindy cruise that Joe was describing - a couple of extraordinarily delightful people to be around.

Joanie Madden of Cherish the Ladies has been doing an Irish Music cruise for years. My friend Mike Mazur was a schanachie telling stories on a couple of them, along with quite a number of headliner- type Irish folk musicians. Joanie is a superb instigator of fun and frolics and I can't imagine having more fun on the water.

Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering has done a couple Autoharp Cruises. I've seen the pictures, with people all decked out in evening dress who I'm more used to seeing in teeshirts - 'twas very interesting.

Both of these were a combination of performances and participation.

I'd also love to go tall ship cruising with folks who sing. Lee Murdock, who specializes in songs of the Great Lakes, has occasionally had some short trip cruises that include music. Tom Kastle, a tall ship captain, is also a great singer and performer, though I don't know that he's done any cruises since he stopped doing the "Great Lakes Whale Watch" cruises (the more you drink, the more whales you see...) It would be interesting to see if anyone is doing music on the Missisippi riverboats now that we no longer have Art Thieme or John Hartford to be making the musical memories there.

Anyone want to take me along on a cruise, I promise to make music, tunes and songs!

Joanne in Cleveland (who has been known to sing on the Put In Bay ferry)

But seriously... if John Kirkpatrick and Chris Newman were cruising, I'd be very inclined to go along for the ride.

A Prairie Home Companion has an annual cruise.

This year they went to the eastern Caribbean, but they sail up the West Coast and in Europe too.

I guess I can say I cruised with Jim Malcolm, formerly of Old Blind Dogs. We took a ferry from Aberdeen to Orkney last month, and two years ago from Oban to Mull - singing sea chanteys all the way. We even got requests from the other ferry passengers, and many of them sang along.

But mostly our trip was by bus, singing all the way and with a concert from a different performer every night. The last two nights were Dick Gaughan and then Malinky - how good can you get?

Ed Miller and Seamus Kennedy also do musical tours - more tours than cruising.

Actually, the last cruise I took was on Boston harbor with a bunch of bears in fancy underpants, and the music was hideous.

However, to get on topic -- Ewan MacColl, I dare say; but I am not sure which way to direct my application.

Debra Cowan comes to mind.

I have sometimes wondered, when hearing about a performer who fears flying but could put together a tour across the pond (from-to either side) if a deal could be worked out with a cruise line for the person to perform a certain number of times in exchange for free trans-Atlantic passage.

No one. Mom is after me to go on a cruise but this motion sickness prone introvert can not imagine a cruise ship or barge being fun, regardless of the line-up of entertainers. Maybe I have a false impression of what a cruise might be like for us introverts.

Just spotted the Show of Hands cruise and it looks good. I was on the MS Serenity this year and it was generally excellent. However we travelled there by train and there was a rail strike when we were due to return! Also the flooded river meant that we never reached our destination because we couldn't get under the bridges and so we eventually disembarked into a field in the middle of nowhere!

I hope the Show of Hands cruise has better luck.
