Subject: Folklore: From musician to teacher
From: GUEST,Bruce Smith
Date: 10 Jul 15 - 07:45 AM

Greetings all,

I have been a musician (of sorts) for many years, playing fiddle primarily, and singing ballads and old songs, sometimes with guitar. A few times I have taught beginning and lower level fiddle students, but never really felt comfortable in that role. In El Salvador this winter I began working with violin students through a local art center, and am now continuing with two students via Skype. I read music, but do not have a deep grounding in theory. I live on the east coast of Canada and am teaching in Spanish.

Have other musicians made the transition to teacher? How did you do it (any tips)? Is there resource material you know of that would be helpful? Do you know of any music festivals that offer workshops about teaching (east coast of US or Canada especially)?

Ideas, suggestions, and guidance much appreciated. Thanks.

Bruce
