I am looking for information about the Billericay Folk Festival in 1983. At the Essex Sound and Video Archive, we have a recording from the festival that was made in a church hall. Does anyone know which church hall was used? I understand the festival was peripatetic; was this the only year it was held in Billericay? Any information would be gratefully received.

That would have been Folk East (not to be confused with the 21st century festival FolkEast) which was organised in a rota by the various districts of the Eastern Region of EFDSS.

The sucessor to Essex District, which organised that festival, is the Essex Folk Association.

Billericay had, at that time, quite a few small halls and other venues suitable for festival events and Folk East used most of them during the day.

Hello Sarah -

You could try enquiring with the Mayflower Morris Men, who are based in/near Billericay (don't confuse it with the one in Hampshire), and could also ask members of Blackmore Morris, who may know.

http://mayflowermorris.com/

http://www.blackmoremorris.org.uk/

I'm also sending a PM to another Mudcatter who lives in that area (or did).

Please keep us informed of any archival Essex folkie doings! Good luck -

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I should have narrowed it down to say the recording is of a performance by the Dead Sea Surfers. I've been in touch with one of the band members, who doesn't remember where it was, but perhaps someone remembers being in the audience? I'll follow up the suggestions above anyway.
