Very surprised there isn't already a thread (or at least one I could find) and its less than 2 weeks to go! (YAY!)

Unfortunately, no MGAS this year, but there IS a mudgather, so hope lots of you will show up. As usual, it will be at the Railway from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 on Saturday. Chocolate welcome as always.

I'll be at Moira but there is far too much going on at the main stages to go to the gather. Sorry :-( I will try to pop in to say hello at least. Possibly wearing a Mudcat T-shirt!

This will be my first opportunity to attend a mudgather. What is it?

Basically, Stanron, it is just a friendly singaround session. Many of us meet up at different festivals through the year, so know each other (but all are most welcome!).

Mudgathers are great!
Sorry I won't be able to be at Moira this year either, but hope it goes well.

"Select"--great word! It will be "the few, the faithful, the fantastic"!

seriously, though, it is always a very nice singaround at a great festival.

Not everyone who turns up, posts here, Gazza2 :)

Really looking forward to it. Alterego will be pitching the campers on to the main field - please be nice to us and our fellow pitching stewards (we know most of you are and thank you for that). If we ask you to pitch in a particular way it is for a very good reason so PLEASE don't argue. We are only thinking about your comfort and safety and we really do know what we are doing! Other than that we are playing the ceilidh as usual, running the odd workshop and the skiffle session on Sunday morning. Hope to meet up with lots of old friends over the weekend and see some great acts, drink lots of beer etc.

Thanks, Noreen. I'll be there later than I hoped on Friday but will be there all weekend. Something has cropped up Friday morning that cannot be avoided so will not be setting off until after lunch. Should still be there at a reasonable time though.

Looking forward to it.

I had the Grandkids with me at Mudgather time so did not really have chance to see much on Saturday afternoon apart from the view from the top of the furnace and assorted kids falling off things in the circus skills tent :-) How did it go?

We had a great time and met lots of lovely people. The melodeon workshop was brilliant run by Julia from Trim Rig and a Doxy.

The final concert was excellent as were most of the acts we saw over the weekend.

Thanks to the excellent organizers and everyone who made the experience so nice.

Definitely going next year.

Dave

Official Mudgather Report:

It was a strange one, it must be said. Only 3 Mudcatters there, though eight others did show up, six of whom sang and/or played.

Mudcatters were:
Me (obviously)
Stanron (his first gather)
Gazza2

Other singers/players:
Chris
Shaun Rattigan
Malcolm Griffiths
Malcolm Goodall
Corinne and Barry Priest

Gill Henn and Roy Rose came and listened for most of it.

In addition to the lack of catters, other oddities were:
1) No chocolate eaten! (I do hope that doesn't get me kicked out!!!). There was chocolate available, but the pub very nicely had provided a large plate of sandwiches just before the previous session ended and it came up with us. Would have been very disrespectful not to finish them--even though most of us had stated how "not hungry" we were.
2) Lots more guitars and far fewer a cappella songs. Most interesting instruments were Stanron's guitar ( a long-necked, small bodied guitar with an aluminium back and sides) and Malcolm's guitar which was one he had made for himself (he is a luthier: sheafguitars@aol.com) which was really beautiful and had a very warm tone.
3) Unusual to see Corrine and Barry, as Barry sang and Corrine played accompaniment (usually in mixed couples it is the other way round).

Anyway, it was a wonderful session, running a full half hour over the "official" time despite there being relatively few people there. It will be nice to see some of the guests at future gathers (and maybe on here--we gave Mudcat a good "commercial"!)

I see that Simmo has started to put the videos up on YouTube already.

I enjoyed my first mudgather. It was very civilised. I had been at a session at the Rawdon Arms earlier that got a bit too raucous when it got invaded by pirates. The mudgather was a welcome change. Am I likely to find any in the North West (UK)?

I once arranged a couple in conjunction with Swinton Folk Club, Stanron, but I have now emigrated to Yorkshire and am no longer helping run that club. They are pretty easy to arrange if you fancy doing one yourself though. Find a pub that will do it. Post a thread here. Bingo! :-)

Dame Pattie Smith EPNS and me were around but sadly didn't make the Mudgather this year.
Also around were Cats, Sea King, Shorty Brenda, and a couple of others whose names escape me right now.
Quite a few of the usual suspects were missing this year.

Ooops, yes, sorry I didn't give the "apologies" in the report above. All of the ones I received have added their own or been added by someone else now, except MGAS who couldn't make Moira this year, sadly.

Can I give my apologies belatedly please?

Many thanks to WW for hosting the Gather and the commercial! Very interested in the possibility of sandwiches and chocolate for future Gathers *grin*

Will be at Moira in 2016 so look forward to seeing you all there, and at other places inbetween.....

Apologies from me too- I thought I might get there, but as it happened I had to set off up North straight after playing for Wild Thyme, so couldn't even pop my head in.

I'm glad it went well, even if it was a "strange one"!
The thing about Mudgathers is that they're all "strange" or different, depending on who turns up- and that's the fun of it!
Would be boring if it was the same people every time.

I organised one in the middle of a field once...

Here's to the next one, who knows where, who knows when :)

Also apologies from me - I wanted to come to the gathering (would have been my first) but was waylaid by a very enjoyable home-spun song session by the caravan. Next time.
Any mudcatters going to the Manifold Peace Gathering in September?

If anyone wants to revisit any of the acts of the festival, Pete Simmonds has done sterling work on recording the acts. This great resource provides a permanent record of acts at many festivals over the year:-

Hi CurlyGill, welcome to Mudcat!

Is Alstonefield a festival? I haven't heard of it, though it looks like a lovely place, in the Peak District.

You'd be better starting a new thread with Alstonefield in the title to get the relevant people's attention, and a bit more information for those like me who know it not.

Good luck with meeting up with some likeminded Catters :)
