When I was at school several centuries ago, we sang a carol, the first lines of which were; There'll be a new world beginning from tonight(ping aping pang pong) Repeat When I climb down from my saddle Im gonna take you to my heart

Anybody have any more lyrics for this?

I think it was called the cowboy carol.

Also we sang a german carol called Stille, stille, Stille. If there is anyone who could provide the remaining lyrics I'd be beholding.

I don't know the Cowboy Carol, but I wonder if the German one is the original composition for Silent Night. The title in German is Stille Nacht. You can find it here:

Some notes:

* these words have an oomlout over the 'u', the 'schon' is over the 'o'
^ the 'B' is the 's' sound (the rounded B like character)

"Still, Still, Still" can be found on the excellent CD Carols from the Old & New Worlds, by Theatre of Voices, Paul Hillier, director. This CD also contains a booklet with the lyrics to all songs in English, French and German.

The book "American Christmas Classics by Ronald M. Clancy, 2001, contains, on page 62, some information about COWBOY CAROL (by Cecil Broadhurst, 1944). I suppose it also contains the sheet music, but that is not among the viewable pages at Google Book Search.

It's great to find so many people that remember the Cowboy Carol. It was my favourite at school, well it was everybody's favourite actually, and we used to beg our music teacher to let (I did say let!!) us sing it! We used to sing the Cowboy Carol round the piano with my mother. It was in a collection of Christmas carols she had. The words and music have haunted me ever since and given me a whimsical fascination for cowboys though I am British and have never seen one. I recently (50 years later) started to play the piano so got a copy of it and learned to play it.

Thanks to all who've posted the words.

I sang the Cowboy Carol in the school Choir over 45 years ago. As my memory is fading these days, seeing all the words again has brought back such great memories. It's not a carol that is as well known as the more traditional ones.

This weekend we are travelling with the rugby team to an away match so I've added the words to our song sheets. Should be a great laugh trying to sing it after a few beers.

I used to sing this one with my choir in Guildford in the 1980's. The arrangement that we used was by Sir Malcolm Sargent; most notable for giving the basses the glorious line "When I pong pong pong! ... guaranteed hilarity and fits of giggles for all!! We didn't perform it many times!!!

Yes, I too have just acquired the lyrics, music and a cd with the Cowboy carol song, in a book called 'Merrily to Bethlehem' - songalong cd - performed by Michael Haslam - pian0 - by the A & C Black Songbook & CD Collection.
I sang this song in my school choir (in the 60's) at school in Germany. Which also reminded me of a German song I use to enjoy singing with the choir ' oh mein liebe Ausgustine'.

Cecil broadhurst was born in Manitoba and moved to Arizona -- there might be a song in there somewhere...

he was involved in several broadway musicals also a musician and actor
in the film industry. He was a painter, known for his desert landcapes.

One other song he wrote was "Sweet Potato Pie" I would like to hear it!

There is a Broadhurst Theater in New York -- i wonder if there is any commection.

4th year that I'm trying to find out more about the "Cowboy Carol". No novelty here, I heard it at school too, in GB, and only one year, not my form. But it has stuck in my memory for more than 30 years, and even in my Mum's. I've been seeking a "jolly, cowboy" version ever since I've been on the Internet (4 years), but at the most can only find really serious choirs, which I like for other carols, but not this one. I'm pleased though to have found the lyrics, so at least I can sing it to myself. Not being a sadist, I don't pass it on to anyone else, but I would if I had a nice version.
