YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
(Bruce Phillips)

Now if you don't want me honey, [you don't have to stall
My love is not a]
* plaything you will find
Now that you have nothin' with my back against the wall
Honey won't you please make up your mind

You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You'll feel so good all alone
Yes you're gonna miss me when I'm gone

Now where were you when I called you on the phone
And your mama said that you were not around?
While I was sittin' at home all alone
You's walkin' the dog all over town

You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You'll feel so good all alone
Yes you're gonna miss me when I'm gone

Now don't you remember when you was my honeybee
And you buzzed around the sugar all night long?
Now your cheatin' heart has gone and got the best of me
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You'll feel so good all alone
Yes you're gonna miss me when I'm gone

As performed by Flatt and Scruggs

Lyrics obtained from a Youtube video with minor corrections by ear. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ukBlHllO8Q

*It sounds like there's an error in this, like a skip. I think it's a problem with the original master, because back when the song was still on Spotify, it also had the bump noise there

Hmmm. It's hard for me to believe that this song was written by Bruce "Utah" Phillips. Where'd you find that attribution?

This is a tough one, because there are lots of songs with the same title. Allmusic.com says the song titled "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" that was recorded by Flatt and Scruggs, was written by somebody named Bill Phillips.

I couldn't find a second source to verify that, but I'm quite sure it's not Bruce Phillips who wrote the song.

It was on the vinyl record. It wasn't on the liner notes on the back, but Bill Phillips is possible. The vinyl said "B. Phillips" while the liner notes mentioned "Bruce Phillips," but not "Bill Phillips," unless I missed it. I'll have to check again, and I'll get back to you on it.

Actually, I found a website with the lyrics of the song and it has the missing parts! In parenthesis are the missing parts.

Now if you don't want me honey you do -*- (n't have to stall
My love) -*- is not a plaything you will find
Now that you have nothin' with my back against the wall
Honey won't you please make up your mind
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone you're gonna miss me when I'm gone

But to further dwell on the "Bruce" vs "Bill" conundrum, I'm coming up fairly empty. Discogs.com's version of the album has 4 of the tracks on the album attributed to "B. Phillips," with their links leading to Bruce's page.

To further confuse things, the band Caroline MotherJudge has a video on Youtube where they say "Please note all efforts to search the copyright of this song has been made to give all songwriting credits where due. Some online information credits Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, but a further search credits Bill Phillips." I looked through the members of the Foggy Mountain Boys and there was no "B. Phillips" there, and searches for "B. Phillips bluegrass artist" yield little useful information. So it seems it may just be a mystery.

Well, another update on the author confusion. Allmusic.com claims here that You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone and I'll Be and on That Good Road Someday were composed by Bill Phillips, while Rock, Salt and Nails and Soldier's Return were written by Utah Phillips. Despite having no real other source to back it up, the assertion remains fairly consistent on the site, with those tracks also attributed to the same artists on the other 2 albums with the songs on them (20 All Time Great Recordings and 1964-1969, Plus, though those may also come from others looking at their webpage.

Then again, "1964-1969, Plus" also attributes Starlight on the Rails to Bill Phillips, while it's a (relatively) well-known Utah Phillips song.

I found another website (an obituary) crediting Rock, Salt and Nails to Utah, as well as a couple others. Another website I found purports that I'll Be and on That Good Road Someday was by Utah.

But more related to this thread, I found a first-hand account claiming that "You're Gonna Miss Me When You're Gone" and "Rock Salt and Nails" were Utah's songs (and actually specifically mentions the record we're getting these songs from).

So we have this settled: Rock, Salt and Nails is a Utah Phillips song; You're Gonna Miss Me When You're Gone is (probably) by Utah Phillips; and the other two might be from Bill?

Repertoire.BMI.com does list a song called YOU RE GONNA MISS ME WHEN I M GONE written by Bruce Phillips and published by Scruggs Music Inc?as well as several other songs with the same title. I notice one was written by John Lee Hooker, one by Charlie Monroe (brother of Bill Monroe), one co-written by Kathy Louvin (daughter of Ira Louvin, one of the Louvin Brothers), and one by Elizabeth Cotten, though most of the names aren't familiar to me.

This song definitely fits into the bluegrass genre:

YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
As recorded by Charlie Monroe & His Boys, 1938.

1. You're gonna miss me when I'm gone.
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone.
I know you will miss me when I'm gone.
You're gonna miss me by my walk.
You're gonna miss me by my talk.
Oh, I know you will miss me when I'm gone.

CHORUS: When I'm gone (when I'm gone),
When I'm gone (when I'm gone),
I know you will miss me when I'm gone.
When I'm gone (when I'm gone),
When I'm gone (when I'm gone),
I know you will miss me when I'm gone.

2. You're gonna miss me by my prayer.
You're gonna miss me ev'rywhere.
I know you will miss me when I'm gone.
You're gonna miss me by my song.
You're gonna miss me all day long.
Oh, I know you will miss me when I'm gone.

3. You're gonna miss me by my way.
You're gonna miss me ev'ry day.
I know you will miss me when I'm gone.
You're gonna miss me by my song.
You're gonna miss me all day long.
Oh, I know you will miss me when I'm gone.

From: Jim Dixon

Because of the similarity of the titles, I figure this is a good place to post these lyrics:

AIN'T NOBODY GONNA MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
As recorded by Earl Taylor & Jim McCall with the Stoney Mountain Boys on "20 Bluegrass Favorites"

CHORUS: There ain't nobody gonna miss me when I'm gone.
There ain't nobody gonna mourn for me too long.
Won't you write these words upon my headstone:
There ain't nobody gonna miss me when I'm gone.

1. Once I had a little sweetheart I loved dearly.
We planned the day that she would be my own.
Some other man's done took my darlin' from me.
There ain't nobody gonna miss me when I'm gone.

2. Once I had a lovin' mother dear and daddy.
Now they're in the land where the angels dwell.
They fin'lly turned to life way up in heaven.
Where I'll find my reward, no one can tell.

3. You been patient, kind and true to me, old Rover.
You're the only friend that's never done me wrong.
Come closer while I pat your head, old Rover.
There ain't nobody gonna miss me when I'm gone.

[Several other artists have recorded songs with this title; I haven't listened to all of them. ]

From the sheet music at the Library of Congress:

YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
Words, Arthur W. French; music, H. P. Danks. ©1878.

1. In other days when pain and grief
Life's golden threads shall break,
And I but find the sweet relief
To never weep or wake;
Perhaps some tender thought of me
Within your heart will dawn,
While then and there, in memory,
You'll miss me when I'm gone.

CHORUS: You'll miss me when I'm gone,
You'll miss me when I'm gone,
In other days you'll speak my praise,
And miss me when I'm gone.

2. You still will keep the rosy hours
Enshrined with joy and hope,
Our pathway strewn with sweetest flow'rs
Along life's sunny slope;
The heart cannot forget the bliss
Of love's delightful dawn,
And looking back to dream of this,
You'll miss me when I'm gone.

3. Fond recollection still will dwell
Amid the scenes of yore,
And wear around your heart a spell
To last forevermore;
Then let me lie in peaceful sleep
To wait a fairer dawn,
And as my memory you keep,
You'll miss me when I'm gone.

Subject: Lyr Add: HONEY WILL YOU MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Aug 15 - 07:26 PM

From the sheet music at Baylor University:

HONEY WILL YOU MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
Words & music by Joseph E. Howard & Ida Emerson, ©1902.

1. A youth and maid strolled through a glade
And paused beneath a tree.
He said, "Dear one, I'll soon be gone,"
And kissed her tenderly.
"Last night, my own, the moonbeams shone.
My fears I thought you'd see.
I asked you then, sweetheart, if when
I'm gone, you'd think of me.

CHORUS: "Honey, will you miss me when I'm gone?
Honey, will you love me, love me long?
When far away, think day by day:
If you love me, don't break the heart you've won.
Honey, will you miss me when I'm gone?
Honey, will you love me just as strong?
Though far away,
Don't tell me nay.
Oh, honey, will you miss me when I'm gone?"

2. At last the day arrived when they
Must from each other part.
The sun shone bright, and in its light
The youth kissed his sweetheart.
"Farewell, my own; when you're alone,
Beneath this shady tree,
Say that you'll miss this tender kiss
And think always of me.

From the sheet music at The National Library of Australia:

YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
Words and music by Walter Beban & Jack Lumsdaine; ©1926.

1. It's parting hour,
And like some flower,
Your love has withered and died.
You bid me go,
But still I know,
You'll want me back by your side.

CHORUS: You'll miss me when I'm gone.
You'll want me later on.
Though other arms may hold you,
You will still remember love tales that I told you.
Each day will seem so long,
Blue birds won't sing their song.
After we have parted,
You'll be broken-hearted.
Dear, you'll miss me when I'm gone.

2. How can I smile,
When all the while,
I'm lonely as I can be?
Just like some barque,
When nights are dark,
Tossed by a wild stormy sea?

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Aug 15 - 08:55 PM

From the sheet music at The University of Tennessee:

WILL YOU MISS ME
Words by George Cooper; music by Charles E. Pratt. ©1872.
"Sung by Emerson's California Minstrels"

1. Will you miss me when I'm gone?
Tell me truly, darling, now.
When my heart is sad and lone,
Will your own in sorrow bow?
Joy sweetly beams from out those eyes.
Will they shed one tear for me,
When all alone 'neath distant skies
My shadowed path may be?

CHORUS: Will you miss me when I'm gone?
Whisper ere we bid adieu.
All my hopes are yours, my own.
Will you miss me? Tell me true. (Ah, tell me true!)

2. Will you miss me when the smiles
Of another softly beam?
When some fairer scene beguiles,
Will you of the absent dream?
Oh, fondly speak those eyes so bright,
Like twin violets bathed in dew.
They tell my heart in sweet delight
That you will still be true.

WILL YOU MISS ME?
Lyricist: A P Carter

When death shall close these eye lids
And this heart shall cease to beat
And they lay me down to rest
In some flowery bound retreat

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me when I'm gone?

Perhaps you'll plant a flower
On my poor unworthy grave
Come and sit along beside me
When the roses nod and wave

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me when I'm gone?

One sweet thought my soul shall cherish
When this fleeting life has flown
This sweet thought will cheer when dying
Will you miss me when I'm gone?

When these lips shall never more
Press a kiss upon thy brow
But lie cold and still in death
Will you love me then as now?

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)

Will you miss me?
(Miss me when I'm gone)
Will you miss me when I'm gone?

However, I heard an alternate version on the radio that was very similar, but with an extra verse. It went:

Perhaps you'll plant a flower &c

Will you miss me &c.

On a cold dark Sunday mornin'
In a country far away
A little girl from ol' Kentucky
Lifted up her voice to say

Will you miss me &c

Will you miss me &c

Both as recorded by the Stanley Brothers

Jim, the lyrics and tune for the Charlie Monroe recording are identical to the Carter Family's recording under the title 'When I'm Gone' - Vi 23569, 14 Aug 1931.

Meade et alia's reference for this family of songs is W.H Delehanty - T.M. Hengler w&m
ca 1894.

The earliest recorded version was by Blind Alfred Reed:

YOU'LL MISS ME

I'm getting old and feeble now my hair is turning grey
My limbs that once were nimble now they're stiff and won't obey
My dancing days are over and my pleasures they have flown
For goodness not for greatness, love, but you'll miss me when I'm gone

Chorus:
Oh when I'm gone you'll miss me, when I'm gone you'll miss me
Some kind heart will miss me when I'm gone (when I'm gone)
Oh when I'm gone you'll miss me, when I'm gone you'll miss me
Oh some kind heart will miss me when I'm gone

What will you do without me, love, when the winter time comes on
Who'll curl their arms around you, love, as I have often done
Who'll hug you, caress you when I have overhead flown
Oh you'll know where to find me, love, but you'll miss me when I'm gone

Chorus

Who'll fence the little yard in, who'll nurse the pretty flowers
Who'll fence the little garden where we sat for many hours
Our children they're all married and left us here alone
And when I'm dead and buried, love, you'll miss me when I'm gone

Chorus

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE (Oaks Family
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 28 Aug 15 - 09:41 AM

This is very similar to the Blind Alfred Reed version:

YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE
As recorded by the Oaks Family, 1930.

1. I'm getting old and feeble; my locks are turning gray.
My footsteps light and nimble are stiffened though today.
My voice has lost it's sweetness; my dancing days are done,
For goodness, not for greatness, you'll miss me when I'm gone.

CHORUS: You'll miss me when I'm gone; yes, you'll miss me when I'm gone.
That* one kind heart will miss me when I'm gone.
You'll miss me when I'm gone; yes, you'll miss me when I'm gone.
That* one kind heart will miss me when I'm gone.

2. What will you do without me when winter time comes on?
Who'll put their arms about you as I have often done?
Who'll mingle in your sadness when my last round is run?
Who'll share your ev'ry gladness when I to heaven have gone?

3. Go fence the little garden where we have sat for hours.
Go fence the little garden; tend all those pretty flowers.
Our children they're all married and left us here alone,
And when I'm dead and buried, you'll miss me when I'm gone.

[* He might be singing "There's one kind heart...."]

Apart from the Reed, Carter Family, Oaks and Monroe's Boys recordings, the only other old-time recording listed by Meade is J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers 'Miss Me When I'm Gone', a vocal duet by Leonard Stokes and George Morris Bb B7349, March 1938. It is the same as the Carter Family and Monroe's Boys version. You can hear it on You Tube.
