From: katlaughing

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A DISCUSSION THREAD OF WHAT IS WRONG OR RIGHT ABOUT VARIOUS SUBJECT MATTERS IN THE THREADS.

THIS IS A THREAD IN WHICH TO POST ONLY THOSE POSITIVE THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT THE MUDCAT AND/OR ITS VARIOUS MEMBERS OR SERVICES.

NO FINGERPOINTIUNG OR BICKERING, NO NAMECALLING, JUST GOOD OLD-FASHIONED MANNERS AND COMPLIMENTS/COMMENTS, PLEASE! THANK YOU!

I came to the Mudcat looking for lyrics and stayed becuase of the kindness of strangers who fast became friends. Following the lead of some of the Venerable Oldies (membership-wise, not necessarily age-wise), I enjoyed looking for the lone thread with only one posting, hunting down lyrics for some hapless soul who used the generic title, "Looking for lyrics".

In the almost year since I've been coming here, I have been awestruck by the depth of knowledge; breadth of experience; caring and kindness; and, downright friendliness. All of those helped me through some very rough times and I am grateful for that.

Gawd and Gawdess bless and keep the Mudcat and all of its minions. May it reign cyber-supreme in the coming years!

Thank you one and all.

My primary school teacher would like to thank the Mudcatters for teacher Bonnie not to be so shy.
My secondary school teachers would like to thank the Mudcatters for teacher Bonnie to spell her words correctly and improve her sentence structure.

My sister would like to thank the Mudcatters for teaching Bonnie the art of listening to others.

My music teacher would like to thank the Mudcatters for helping to answer some of Bonnie's music questions. Allowing him to get 'right down to business' with her banjo lessons.

My accountant would like to thank the Mudcatters for decreasing Bonnie's expenses. She is so entertained on the Threads, that she spends little time in the stores shopping for things she really does not need.

My soul would like to thank the Mudcatters for showing Bonnie she is loved just the way she is.

Luv BB
(Mama KatSW, great Thread Space)

Wow! Great Thread, Kat!

I came for the lyrics.

I stay because of the cool collection of interesting intellects questioning and answering the universe, bonded by a humanity that is expressed in language and music.

I was connected to one other cyber-community similar to this one...Megabyte University back in 1993-5. But the technology did not allow the expression that we are capable of here. I often wonder if any Mudcats were members of that list.

Mudcat Rules!

Tolerance, forgiveness, good humour, people not being reluctant to say what they think - and others being able to disagree with them without it descending into abuse. Inspiration. Humanity. Friendship. Love and respect. Understanding. Helpfulness. Knowledge offered in a spirit of sharing something of value rather than a tone of condescension

I don't come here as often as I'd like. But I've been moved to tears - in a positive sense - by what I've found here more often than I can recall.

Now all I need to do is learn to show those qualities I admire in the Mudcat in more of what I contribute here.

G.

Lotsa things musical. Great writing. Great humour. And have learned more about how a community actually functions than I ever could hope to on the "outside". It's kind of a "...forest for the trees" thing.
Love it.

you may all imagine yourselves in whichever group you please...(no, I will not list 'em..*grin*)

where else can I go where there is ALWAYS something of interest, being shared by folks that I respect and admire?

BillD, you are a sly one, aren'tcha? I thought about the naming of a few Venerable, but decided against it, as it might not serve the purpose of this thread. Best left to the imagination.

Kind of like the mother who left each of her children a letter to be opened privately after her death. In each one she expressed to that child how they had been her most beloved and special child.

So far, so good, phoaks! Thanks! THIS is why I stay.

I followed a link here looking for lyrics and discovered an incredible community. There is so much informed and wide-ranging discourse on music and music-related subjects, not to mention an impressive variety of other subjects, which somehow get linked to music more often than not. It's like wandering into a neighborhood pub and immediately being accepted into dozens of conversations at once.

I think it's wonderful that so many people from all over the world, from so many different backgrounds, can meet virtually here and give each other information, support, diversion, and entertainment. There is so much of value here, and that is why I keep coming back.

Thank you all for being here and letting me join you.

Ever since that first post, when I asked for song lyrics, and someone responded within the hour, I was hooked. Soon, I stopped coming for the lyrics, and started joining in the conversations, and trying to help others with their requests. I love the people here! They're from all backgrounds and all have their own points of view. What I probably like most is the fact that I can talk to people about music who know what I'm talking about, and can understand, as well as gain new knowledge as the other 'Catters impart their interest to me. Now, instead of just joining in, I get to start conversations; recently my "What Song Makes You Drop Everything" was surprisingly a huge hit! I consider it a landmark on the way to becoming a megamember (like Rick, Kat, 'Spaw, Art, Bert, Max...) when I charted my first over-100-hit message. I want to thank you all for being my cyber-buddies! Ever since "The Music Gang" from my community college brokeup have I spent so much time among people who share interests like this. Sure we argue and fight and have fallings out, but we always become friends again in the end (like The Shambles; welcome back, pal!) Long life to the 'Cat and all it's denizens. I love you all!

--Mbo (who throws homework & art projects aside so he can talk to his Mudbuddies) welcome

Great, as a beginner in the net, I can't wait till the hour I get to the first Internet cafe, when it's possible and connect to the mudcat org. I make some kind of music mostly unknown around me, here I have the opportunity to know that the problems I meet are similar in the rest of the world, and to receive tips from other musicians. This site looks so great, maybe, because this community is virtually great, so just let me dream of a place in this world where it's real. The world is in key of G. Cheers

I, too, came for lyrics ... and stayed. I'm not a joiner of clubs, groups, etc., because I'm far too independent in my thinking and by nature to be happy in controlled situations, however, there are several people on the mudcat, some I've met in person and some I haven't, whom I call "friend," so I reckon that makes me part of a group! The mudcat is not my only social outlet so I've been able to keep my objectivity regarding it's place in my life. But I do consider it a mitzvah to have discovered so many people who have the same musical and social interests as I, when I was sure I was the last old folkie on the universe (besides Pete Seeger, of course). As you know, I'm a bit inhibited when communicating via the written word, much better face to face or on the 'phone. I just keep coming back on a daily basis.
since realising that there are other people a bit like me out there, I have rearranged my life so that I can find out who I really am. I finally told Social Services that I no longer wanted to be a part of an organisation that prioritised paperwork and the budget, when there are people out there who need someone to lean on.
What I'm saying is that Mudcat has changed my life to the extent that I no longer have to go to work, and can use my time and skills when and where i see fit.
Next year, I shall revisit the festivals and events that I haven't been able to go to because of work and child-rearing commitments. Thanks, Bron.

I for one appreciate the community that we have here.... from find obscure lyrics to songs... "Henry's made a Lady out of Lizzy", thanks Frank.... to support for a musical project after losing my wife this year (check Celtic Waltzes thread) to making new friends on the internet and in person (Margarita and Nightowl). This is an awesome resource that we have here and an incredible support network..... bless us all ....

and..... somebody has to do it sometime:

"You've got to Accentchuate the Positive,
Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative,
Don't mess with Mister Inbetween.
You've got to spread joy up to the maximun,
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith, or pandemonium li'ble to walk upon the scene.

To illustrate my last remark, Jonah in the whale. Noah in the Ark,
What did they do just when everything looked so dark?
'Man' they said, 'We better Accenttchuate the Positive,
Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative,
Don't mess with Mister Inbetween,
No! Don't mess with Mister Inbetween.

(Lyrics: Johnny Mercer, Music: Harold Arlen
Copyright: 1944, From "Here come the Waves")

I came for the BS, because I have a head full of it, and BS never did anyone any good sitting in a pile, it has to be spread around. So I started adding my pile of BS to others. Through that, I got hooked onto some of the music threads, and even added a few of my own. It's great to 'talk' to people about things that matter, be it cat farts or song lyrics, taking in police chases and homesickness on the way. I see, socially, about 4 people a week, so sitting up here in the bedroom, clacking away on this thing has brightened up a gloomy time. Thank you.

....because virtually everyone who posts to this forum at one time or another echoes the way I think and feel far more eloquently and insightfully than I myself sometimes can.... Because there are people here who actually give a damn to take the time and effort to think about things, and to reflect on them.... Because the wide range of diversity that weaves itself in and out of the folk and blues music tapestry through the threads is sort of like browsing through the stacks of a living, breathing library: one never knows what one will find to excite the curiosity and pique the interest, but it is a certainty that sooner than later a gem will be uncovered, sometimes where you least expect it.... panning for an intimate education. Faculty and students of Mudcat U.

You guys, one and all, are top-drawer, first-rate, first-order, first-class, top-gun, first-water, muy pukka, and excellent or exceptionally peerless, matchless (got a match?), nonpareil; and usally also show yourselves, one and all, to be exemplary and top-grade, foremost amongst the outstanding, alternating between superior and superb with occasional patches of superlative. You act so topnotch it makes me feel you're A-one or some kind of star; the crowning and the greatest. That's why I come back. And if that doesn't emphasize thepositive, I dunno!

Art, negative is positive in that case. A double negative is positive in photography, mathematics, and logic.

I came to Mudcat a year and a half ago, following a twisted trail through Yahoo!s links: arts and entertainment and several intersection led me here: after trying to get to folk music through AOL and coming to a dead end in a country music chatroom which turned into a chapter meeting of the Aryan Brotherhood, when I arrived here I was in heaven. I read a few threads, posted to a few, then took a chance and started one of my own, presenting my version of Abilene--a couple of new verses. My first response was from S.P.Buck Mulligan who wrote "I think Bob Gibson would like these verses just fine. I also think he'd be happy that they make "Abilene" even more of a real "folk song."

Wow! Right off the bat someone had said something nice to me. I hadn't known Bob Gibson had written the song, and so asked for confirmation, and wondered if he were still performing. Roger Himmler responded that he had recently died and said something that I misinterpreted to be a putdown of Gibson as not really a folk singer so I got a bit huffy and defended his status as one--and then I met Art Thieme who posted that Gibson was dead but that Art had been asked to be part of a celebration of him a month before he died. I asked Art if he (Art) ever played any gigs out my way (California) and he told me he had been forced to quit performing. Then Roger came back explaining that he had not been questioning Bob Gibson's status as a folk singer but had instead been poking a bit of fun at the "folk purists" among us who wouldn't consider him as one. What a thread: all of seven messages and I got my intro to three real live Muddies who had actually listened to what I had to say, got a great compliment, and an introduction to the folk or not folk argument which crops up again, plus from Roger an introduction to another theme of several Mudcat discussions, the problem that irony is not always understood without emoticons or BGs or whatever. I was hooked.

Soon after that I got involved in my first polite extended debate--with Chet W.--on the thread "Has anyone the courage now?" over whether or not rap music is political speech. I soon met Joe Offer and Big Mick and Blessings Barbara and Roger in Baltimore and Barry Finn and Northfolk and John in Brisbane and Alan (and Alison) in Australia and Alice in Montana and Wolfgang Hell and Frank in the Swamps and Murray and Lonesome E.J....--and Max and Dick and Susan...who would not have become addicted? And the population grew in delightful ways and I've gotta stop trying to list all the people who were here when I came and not even start on those who came after or I'll never get breakfast or get anything else meaningful done all day or even be able to check on other threads than this one...

This place is as much home to me now as is the building which houses my wife, my dogs, and my computer.

I love you all

Bonnie, I always keep my relatives in my heart (I sometimes even have incestuous thoughts about them--"How about a sip of that Madiera, m'dear?"--you'll always be young and pure and new and nice and fair and sweet seventeen to me.) I didn't even mention half of the people whose presence here when I came enriched my life: I purposely refrained from mentioning any who came after--although I was in their welcoming committees. Sorry if you felt neglected (now if you'll hold that glass out, I'll just refill it...).

Heard about this place from a friend at the Winfield KS Music Festival this year; had to visit.

The BS threads are a kick, the music knowledge is awesome, the resources apparently unlimited.

Populated by shy folks and smart alecs, *great* bar rooms, interesting history stories, esoteric songs, exotic pets (and instruments, sometimes in the same body--I *still* can't get over the "hairy armadillo," makes me giggle every time I think about it), and many, many people I'd love to meet in person--Art Thieme, are you listening? Like most folk I came here looking for lyrics, stayed for the "crack" (talk, not cocaine!).Learned a lot, offloaded some old jokes that had been looking for a (retirement) home, expressed some ill-informed opinions, found people with my weird sense of humour, people who loved food as well as blues & folk, found a tavern that didn't give me a hangover, a clinic that didn't charge and an audience that couldn't throw things. Paid my dues with a couple of lyrics as well.

What's so great about "normal" anyway?

I like how an apparently trivial inquiry usually rapidly generates a lot of knowledgeable replies...it's hard to believe there are so many people concerned with the same odd little questions I am....

Pussy, Pussy, Pussy

If they "wanted to add something new" they would have done it six months ago...

Why open a festering, petruid fish in search of self adulation? Its pathetic.

Cripes another forgetful "veteran" who has forgotten the "BS" nomenclature.

Kat, thanks for refreshing this thread! 'Bout time that we start counting blessings, instead of whining. Love 'cat cuz of generous people like YOU, and all others, who so freely give time and energy to those they don't know, and probably won't see. Selfless giving is about the best there is.
