Hi all

The garth brooks thread and myself watching Jewel on PBS last night (doing Christmas stuff - so-so I thought though the arraingements were interesting) made me think - how many of your favorite artists have never done a Christmas album? And what do you think that says?

Just a question.

My wife and I have a big Christmas CD collection, and, I can assure you, so many people have recorded Christmas albums, that it would be perilous to assume that, just because you haven't seen it, it isn't out there.

-a current fave is Boxcar Willie. I the Ventures Christmas album is a perennial favorite, as well as the Roches, and John Prine--

What I would love, perhaps more than anything, would be a Jimi Hendrix Christmas album, but, for many years, through the late 60's to fairly recently, Christmas music wasn't cool, as far as pop artists were concerned--anyone at a record company who suggested such a project would have probably been stripped of their love beads, had their poncho turned inside out, and shown the door.

A Delta Blues christmas collection would be great--

Oh, I woke up this morning, I believe that Christmas is here, Oh, I woke up this morning, I believe that Christmas is here, My woman left with Santa and his Reindeer.

Sorry, I am getting silly here, but the idea of Jewel and Garth Brooks together makes me laugh.

I don't think Van Gogh ever did a Christmas album.....and Picasso got terrible reviews for his rendition of "The Christmas Song" when he changed the first line to, "Chester's nuts roasting on an open fire."

MMario,

That doesn't mean they didn't do any Christmas albums!!

SPaw, you are wrong about Van Gogh, he recorded a great Christmas album, but it was never released because he cut his ear off before they could take the picture for the cover--

no --actually it does, because I KNOW all the albums my (current) favorite artists have produced - and none of them have done a christmas album....though I have heard them sing christmas carols - typically in July...

What I meant by major artists wasn't just the big time pop artists - anyone with a recording history longer that a couple albums (after all most of us here are into folk/blues

I just wonder if there is pressure from recording companies for artists to do holiday albums irregardless of the artist's feelings toward the season.

I see Loreena McKinnett has done a holiday album but for some reason they're trying to charge me $15 for a short album (it's about 20 min.).

Leonardo da Vinci never did a Christmas album. Cheap shots aside, I have seen a reference for a new Christmas album of seasonal material from the Alan Lomax collection, which looks amazing.

What about Zappa? I can't recall anything, but I'd like to cook some strange kind of Xmas MUFFIN for my family. Cheers

Oh I don't know Marcello, why not just go to Saint Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast instead and let someone else do the cooking. Plus you can steal the margarine.

Hey, Saint Alphonso is the 1st August. Do you know any receipt Zappa ever explained or referred to? Troubles of kitchen related to major artists are not into this thread, but I like to talk about hi level receipts given by them (maybe two or three years ago collecting coupons from an x tabasco box, you would receive a book of creole kitchen named "Cooking with the Blues", icluding B.B. King's receipts and many other). Seriously, J.Winter, S.B.Williamson are the first names I recall, but they only sung a song referring somehow to Xmas, talkin' about blues, I don't know anything giving more to this thread. The world is tuned in G. Cheers

I remember a Zappa suite with the lyrics, "We gotta send Santa Claus back to the rescue mission, Christmas don't make it no more, You know that murder and destruction scream the toys in every store" or something like that--

I also remember, from the Kinks, "Father Christmas, give us your money, we'll beat you up if you make any noise...."

So there is very good news for you, Mick, and that is that there are some very unsentimental christmas songs out there--

Hey, Rick, whatta ya mean Sandy Paton didn't do a Christmas album? I have a terrific CD called Twas on a Night Like This (A Christmas Legacy) by Cathy Barton, Dava Para, and the Paton family. The CD booklet doesn't say who sings what, but I'd swear that's Sandy's voice on several of the solos. It's a good album.
