Hard to believe: "If you want to busk in the Byward Market, it will cost you $200 for a busking license. If you want to busk in a different area of downtown Ottawa, it's another $200/year for a busking license for that district. You have to pay for a new license for each district of downtown Ottawa in which you would like to busk."

There was a contributor here recently who praised the Ottawa Valley step-dancers busking in the Byward Market ....

Here's the petition.

"Nous n'avons pas pu trouver la page que vous recherchez."

That's what came up when I opened the link, meself.

Hmmm - the URL seems to be too long for the blickifier to handle, so I guess it's copy and paste:

https://www.change.org/p/city-of-ottawa-music-in-ottawa-let-musicians-and-other-buskers-play-the-streets-of-ottawa-without-fees-or-licenses?source_location=petitions_share_skip

Here's the full text of the petition:

Bringing your music to a street corner in Ottawa used to be as natural as breathing. Then, the City of Ottawa decided to charge street musicians and other buskers a $200 fee before allowing them to share their music with the tourists and locals of Ottawa. If you want to busk in the Byward Market, it will cost you $200 for a busking license. If you want to busk in a different area of downtown Ottawa, it's another $200/year for a busking license for that district. You have to pay for a new license for each district of downtown Ottawa in which you would like to busk.

Busking used to be a thriving scene in downtown Ottawa, much more so than it is now, with musicians from all over the world pausing in their tours and travels to bring us their distinctive sounds. Musicians and other street artists bring a vitality and distinctive character to the streets of downtown Ottawa, which encourages tourists and locals to spend time, and money, in the local businesses downtown. In other words, busking helps to boost the city's economy. The City of Ottawa should be encouraging artists to play its streets, not charging them fees in order to do so.

The fees and licensing requirements also mean that there is less variety in the street music that is heard in downtown Ottawa - the same acts who have paid for their year-long license to busk one area will be the same acts that play that area regularly, while acts from out of town or those who can't afford the license fee will simply not have the opportunity to be heard. (If you want to busk for one day only, the fee is $50, plus time spent on paperwork in order to acquire the license).

It's difficult enough trying to be an artist, when it comes to money and income. Being a musician is hard work, requiring many hours, and many years, of intensive study, practice, and rehearsal. The costs of touring and traveling in order to be a musician are high, and the income received from it is low. Before the busker's fees and licensing requirements came into effect, busking used to be a great way for musicians to bring in more income, as well as being an opportunity for unknown artists - and any artist who can't afford the busker's fees - to build an audience and for their music to be heard.

Please sign this petition asking the City of Ottawa to remove the fees and licensing requirements for street musicians and other buskers to play the streets of Ottawa.

Well...it seems to me .....that if your handle your finances correct...Even the most pathetic of buskers can achieve 4 dollars a week to pay the solicitators fee. (Why that is only....12'5 cents an hour taxation with no mandated reporting.)

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

You Canuks seem to have it much better of than your poor endentured cousins.
