I have just found out that Andrea Aldridge has died. SHe was a great singer and songwriter.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 27th at 1 PM on the Virginia On Sunday, September 27 at 1 PM aboard the Virginia V at Lake Union, Seattle.

There are obituaries that perhaps someone will post. Since I was not a close friend, I don't feel it is my place.

She wrote many funny songs...Bar Maidens of Valhalla, When the Alabam's Crew was Laid, others I can't think of right now. Absolutely top notch singer. She sang with Broadside, St. Elmo's Choir and other groups.

Andrea Marie Aldridge - In Memoriam

June 19, 1959 - August 6, 2015

Andrea Marie Aldridge passed away peacefully at her home on August 6, 2015. Andrea was born on June 19,1959 in London, Ontario, Canada. Her parents, Judith Anne Lord (Foley) and Noel H Aldridge MD, moved to Edmonds, Washington where Andrea spent her childhood years. She continued to reside in the local area, most recently in Mountlake Terrace.

She graduated from Edmonds High School in 1976 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Western Washington University in 1993. Andrea's career included editing, supervising Census Bureau staff, and most recently working for the Planning and Development Department of the City of Seattle.

Andrea had many passions, including a lifelong love of the water. She enjoyed cruising, sailing, historic tall ships and singing sea shanties. She had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of several vocal groups including St. Elmo's Choir, The Pilots of Tiger Bay, and Broadside. She played guitar and often wrote her own songs and ballads. Her maritime interests extended to a job as Chief Purser and Second Mate on the Lady Washington, where she was also a popular shantyman. She acted in several local theater productions, and once earned a pilot's license. She had a passion for great food and wine, and enjoyed creating her own unique dishes. Andrea was known for her dry quick wit and sense of humor.

Andrea leaves behind her partner and fiancé Robert Freeman, brother Anthony Mark Aldridge (Cindy), nephews Raymond (Shelan) and Christopher, step-mother, Theresa Aldridge Kirschbaum (Ted), step-sisters Barbara (Bob), Beth, and Heather, many cousins in Australia and countless friends. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Sasha.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 27th at 1 PM on the Virginia V Steamship, at dockside. (Historic Ships Wharf, 860 Terry Ave N, Seattle, WA) Andrea will be interned on Stuart Island, WA beside her mother, at rest in a place they both dearly loved.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PAWS (PO Box 1037 Lynnwood, WA 98046) or the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (PO Box 2019, Aberdeen, WA, 98520

I am heartbroken to hear that Andrea has died. I first met Andrea through an internet group called rec.music.folk, back before there was a worldwide web, and we connected on many levels. We lost touch a few years back, but I tried to track her down this year; now I know she was ill, in the last months of life.

Andrea was a first rate singer and a wonderful songwriter - a mainstay of St. Elmo's Choir and one half of Pilots of Tiger Bay. She had an extraordinary talent, an irreverent sense of humor, and a deep sensitivity, as well as a love for all things nautical. I used to sing her excellent song for the Lady Washington, "Outward Bound."

Even though we'd been out of touch, I have always thought of her as a dear friend and soulmate, and my heart weeps at this news.

Goodbye Andrea, my friend. I mark your passing in your own words, so brilliantly wrought:

She's outward bound, and headed for her homeland
The summons of the wind's song will pull her towards the sea
Her bows turned round from this shore unto her own land,
Her sails joining in song, she knows where she must be,
Upon the wave, she's free.

Does anyone have a solo recording of "Outward Bound" lyrics and music by Andrea Aldridge, not necessarily sung by Andrea

I may be able to make one for you - I might even have an old tape of Andrea singing it, but that would take a lot of digging to find. Closer at hand might be a recording from a concert I did some years ago, or just go into the studio and sing it. Theresa, my email! somewhat obscured to prevent spam, is

Initial digging produced an old live recording of Pilots of Tiger Bay, mostly the same material that's on their CD, but not the homemade tape I'm sure Andrea made for me in 1993 (or thereabouts) with some of her original songs. My live concert recording has bad distortion. However, I'd be more than glad to record it for you. Write me and let me know where to send it.

Outward Bound is on the first (and only) recording St Elmo's Choir ever made. I have copies of it on cassette tape that I'd be happy to send to whoever wants. I think Trapper Graves had CD's made from the same recording, but don't know offhand if any are available.

Theresa, if you're still looking for a recording of Outward Bound, I've made one for you - just a simple home recording, but reasonably good quality. I hope it's all right that I put it up for anyone who's interested - it's at danschatz.com/outward-bound.mp3.

I have a vague memory that Andrea once told me she preferred to leave the last chorus unresolved, which is different from the way she did it with St. Elmo's Choir. I could be wrong; it had been 20 years, but that's what I recalled her saying, so that's the way I recorded it. Maybe an unresolved ending is appropriate, given a death that came way too early.

I sure wish Andrea were still with us.

I just learned of Andrea's passing.

So very sad to discover that she isn't on the planet anymore.

I met her many years ago through the world of aviation at various airshows such as Arlington when it was a good show and at evergreen in Vancouver WA, when she used to see Gary her friend from Oregon.

I had the privilege of having her work for me one year at Oshkosh Wisconsin, where she sold my shirt designs off of my 1946 International firetruck on the main field, she was a natural at it. She was smart, and very much a people person and had a hell of a razor sharp mind and wits about her, and very funny and charming.

I saw her and Kathy perform at the Seattle center one summer during bumper shoot, I was always fond of her musical talents, both in singing and in lyrics, she was very good at it, in fact, she was very good at anything she lent her hand to.

I lost track of her about 13 years ago, from time to time I would try to find her via the internet, but hit many dead ends. Today I was looking through some of my old pictures and found some of her I had taken down at the Evergreen field many years ago and I got to thinking about her, so tonight was the first news I got wind of, that she had flown west. ( those of us in aviation, use that term for our friends that have passed ).

I could write volumes about this rare woman, for we had some memorable times and good laughs together at various places. This weekend,I will crack open a bottle of Vueve Clicquote yellow label ponsardin champagne with my wife, as we shall raises our glasses and drink a toast to a marvelous vixen of song and merriment out at shilshoale boat ramp, while looking at the water and mountains.

She never knew that I eventually went on to work for FOSS maritime Co. here in Seattle, based in Ballard, so we are still linked by a love of the sea and the sky. I still miss her very much, even more so now, but she lives on in the form of fond memories and pictures I have of her.

The planet was a much better place because she was on it and lived her life to the fullest!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,
J. Dennis Hicklin

Hello:
I just wanted to briefly thank you for having this discussion. I was introduced to Andrea's music by accident when I was 13 years old. I was in a production of Treasure Island and after the play was over scoured the backstage for bits of things to remember the play by. One of these things that I snagged was a tape for pre-show music, full of wonderful sea chanties sung by a group of women. I played that tape and made copies and went nuts but I had no idea who they were.
Years later, when Google became a thing, I would plug the lyrics of "outward bound" (?) and try to find ANY information on the song, the singers, anything. I didn't find anything at all for years. I even tracked down the director of the play, some 15 years after the play had closed, but to no avail.
I am devastated that it took Andrea's death for me to discover her, but I am so grateful to have finally found this song.

Thank you. Katrina dot Acaster at gmail dot com
