Janie, thank you for your update. It does take a looong time to recover, and I have found my idea of "strong" far exceeds the therapist's measure. I know you'll keep at it, continuing your healthy nutrition and attention to working your muscles intelligently.

Love,
Maeve

Progress is slow but prognosis for full recovery remains good. Still restricted to walker and wheelchair but hopeful next x-rays will show enough bone healing to allow me to graduate to a cane.    Have lost a lot of muscle mass. If I could put full weight on the bone right now, it would collapse because of the weakness of the muscles. Have also developed some tendonitis below the knee.

Start serious outpatient PT next week and that should help push progress a bit faster.

Well Janie I hope the time at work didn't tire you to much.

Scotland revealed was a series a few years ago it captured my wonderful land.

I remember many years ago some cousins came from Utah to visit we were commenting on the beauty of their country and its largeness. One of the girls admitted they did have wonderful places but would often have to travel for a long time to get a change of scene. She said it was the thing she loved most about Scotland that you could travel a couple of hours and have traversed several different types of landscape.

In Glasgow which back in my fathers youth was a smoky dirty industrial city you got a bus or jumped on your bike on a Friday night and a short time later you were sitting outside your tent by a lochside (lake) enjoying supper ready to walk valleys or mountains the next morning.

I love farmer's markets. Sold at them for years. Very different from the Saturday market Daddy would take us to when we were small. Loved them then, and love them now.

Go back to work half time on Monday and starting outpatient PT (as opposed to home exercises given by a PT who was stopping by every week or so.) According the Dr. and the x-rays, bone-knitting is slow, but is happening. Can put some more weight on the leg but gonna be stuck with the walker for at least another 6-8 weeks and still dependent on wheelchair to cook, do laundry, or go any distances. The upper body joints, tendons, bursa and ligaments continue to be challenged. It's a balancing act - as is much of life, eh?

In good spirits.

Thanks, y'all!

Hi Lass hope you managed to get some weight on the leg.

When I was little no Saturday morning was normal without a trip to the Glasgow Barras (a covered market) It was said you could find anything there a wander through the stalls was always an education from the old (well he seames awfy auld when I was four) man who used to play the hammer dulcimer (the instrument still fascinates me today) to banter from the various stalls.

In the days before the NHS looked after our health my big brother remembers the snake oil man and a big black man who used to pull teeth with his fingers.

this is The barras   played by Alistair MacDonald

Good morning, Janie. Our resident Pileated woodpecker announced himself with a grand, big voice yesterday before arriving in one of the big old black cherries trees in the apple orchard. He seemed a bit miffed the fruit is all gone.

Sending thoughts your way.

Good morning Janie I hope you are progressing nicely.

Today I found this lovely recording of Ye Banks and Braes played outside Robert Burns cottage in Alloway. Every year as a child we would go there I believe the have built a fancy visitor centre now.

Little did I know then that the first 19 years of my married life would be spent in an almost identical dry stone cottage except the one we rented had a slate roof.

Thought I would give our legs a rest today and have a look at another means of transport there are 5 canals in Scotland this is The crinan canal

we will just need to get you a bouncy harness we can hang from the roof so you can exercise your legs and gradually build up the load bearing just like the ones they used to hang in doorways for bairns :)

Janie, you would be an effective advocate for your clients, yes? In this case you are your own client. Get in there and tell them what is needed! Your plan makes excellent sense. Their misconceptions are their issue, not yours. I see nothing in this situation that would suggest anything other than an intelligent person working toward good healing using best practice.

the blackening is a peculiar Orcadian custom relating to weddings it happens to the groom though now some females seem to have adopted it, thankfully because I got married just outside Glasgow both Dauvit and I were spared the silliness.

The victim is waylaid by his friends and stripped, bound and bundled onto a lorry (Truck with a open flat bed) He is then Blackened with flour treacle and feathers and trundled round the town for a while, this can take a few hours and often involves beverages that are not tea or coffee. at the end the poor soul is often unceremoniously dumped in the sea to clean of.

the blakening

The blackening and other wedding customs most of which have gone out of use now except for the cog which refers both to the wooden receptacle made using the barrel makers skills(having two longer handles so that it can be passed from hand to hand among the guests) and the drink contained therein.Orkney wedding customs

Thanks Wesley!

The pleasure is mine, Joe. Next year, steaks it will be!

What a shame that Joe and Megan did not meet. I suspect you are true kindred spirits. And Megan, I continue to relish your links, as well as those of others. I've never traveled outside the USA (rarely outside of the eastern part even here,) but should I ever have the opportunity, you have made the Orkney Islands a "must visit."

I'm to call the orthopaedist's nurse today to determine if I can return to work part time next week, before my next doctor visit. Worker's comp is pushing me to do so, but also pushing for 3 days a week going to an outpatient PT place. She is thinking that pool therapy plus the equipment available for me to work with would speed strengthening and weight bearing, and I agree. However, I have arthritis and other tendon/ligament/joint problems with my shoulders, wrists and hands. My concern is I still can't put more than 25-30% of my weight on the leg, which means using the walker puts considerable stress on those joints, etc. (The upper body muscles hold up pretty good. It's the joints and tendons, etc. that hurt and pop.) I need to use the walker as much as possible because weight bearing will promote bone healing. All the walking with walker involved with getting into and around the office at work 4 days a week plus getting into a PT place 3 times a week, in addition to taking care of ADL's risks me blowing out the upper body parts. I'd rather wait until I actually see the doctor and get more x-rays, and have a couple of weeks of the outpatient PT in the hope it will help me put more weight on the leg and less on my upper body parts before going back to work part time.

I don't advocate for myself very well with doctors and case managers and also am loathe to be misunderstood as being lazy or a shirker. So wish me luck and courage to speak up for what I think I need today when I talk with the doctor's office, and later with the work comp case manager.

I have to say that last year after the Getaway, Janie cooked me the best steak I have ever had in my life. This year, we had roasted chicken from the supermarket - but we still had a good time. Still, Janie, do you think you could arrange for steak next time?

I hadn't known much about Megan until after I came back from Orkney this year. I'm sure I walked right past her house, because I walked every street in her time in the four days I was there. If only I had known who she was and what a nice person she is.

But I have had the profound privilege of knowing Janie for many years, and that has been a pleasure.

Janie, Here is a link to a piece of music I composed, that is now being used in 6 hospitals in 4 states, for psych and cardio therapy. The cardiologist told me that "...there is a LOT of healing in this music.."
Try it, it will take you away, and play a movie in your head...but it's YOUR own movie....makes healing a bit easier.
When I took in a stack of CD's, for the cardiologist, and hospital, I gave them permission to copy and use them...no licensing..or money stuff...free. So, Mudcatters get that too...You WILL heal...I wish it a comfortable one!!

Regards,
GfS

P.S...Oh yeah, the link...

Lass these might be the last ones for a while I am having some problems with the machine so it will be going for a check up.

This one is for Halloween. From the earliest I can remember my dad took me around the Glasgow necropolis . This city of the dead is filled with interesting architecture and people. The city was famous for ship building and heavy engineering and many of these captains of industry can be found alongside the poet who wrote "Wee Willie Winkie"

One of the last times I visited was with My brother in law and his wife and my Dauvit, They watched amazed as I would touch a memorial saying " this was name, he was Trade" I never realised how much of what my father had told me was still in my head.

My favourite stone however is not some fancy mausoleum but a simple rectangle of stone belonging to a Glasgow grocer, how do we know this? well all round the edge of the stone is a list of the things he sold and the opening hours of the shop.

The second is from a cd that came with the book of Scottish folk songs I never realised till I got this book just how much folk songs I had absorbed from my mum. She had a simple philosophy in life If you are happy sing because you are happy if you are not happy sing to make yourself happy.

A wet stormy day here so hids fine tae snuggle up wie a mug o hot chocolate and this lovely video from our northerly neighbours a Shetland lace is a knitted lace now I mesel hivna the skill but a full shawl is something to be treasured and often passes down from mother tae daughter through the generations.

I got the chance to return tae Shetland this year and spent four wonderful days rootin aroon on the main island. The landscape is rugged and free the folk are quiet yet if you tak time tae spik wi dem they are warm and generous. (That should give Maeve something to translate :) )

As a child on the edges of Glasgow I could never understand how ower peerie (In Orkney peedie i.e. small) Sheltie (Shetland sheepdog) could ever be of any use herding sheep. Having seen these small hardy sheep however it no surprise for an overwintered Shetland lamb weighs in at about 22KG compared to an overwintered Scottish Black face which comes in at about 40Kg.

I had a thread going for a while called sunshine thoughts filled with all the places and events that made people smile.

I rarely get out much these days so spending some time "lukin fur peedie nims" (looking for little treats) for you is a pleasure.

Today I thought I would share with you some of our island music we have a strong fiddle tradition that we share with the Shetland isles. When I came here as a new bride many years ago it was still quite common to see the much loved fiddle hung beside the peat fire.

The old man in one house told me it was kept there because in old dry stone walled houses which were usually damp and bothered with woodworm the warmth from the fire and the peat smoke helped keep the fiddle sweet and free from damage.

Rousay fiddle music sadly now many of us live in centrally heated houses the old fiddle is in a case in a cupboard out of sight out of mind.

Ohh, Megan. Your posts and links belong on even a separate thread. Would be a wonderful thread with the prefix "folklore." And would comment, compare, and commiserate regarding the ways parts of Scotland and the Appalachian plateau areas of West Virginia and Kentucky resonate. Am only about 10 minutes through Tom Weir's video and will return to it as soon as I finish this post. Those first scenes and comments could be about my own homeland, the hills and hollers of the western half of West Virginia. At least in some ways. The opening hike could be mistaken for a hike up a switchback above a West Virginia holler on the central Appalachian plateau. I think what in Scotland is called a glen, in West Virginia is called a holler (hollow.) Narrow valleys carved out by creeks and a few shorter rivers among ancient, rugged hills that millennia ago were towering mountains higher than most ranges that exist in the world today. Ancient, fey, rugged lands. Most of the height of the mountains where I was raised now rests along the Mississippi Delta or lies at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Your time, care and attention in locating and sharing these videos is such an act of kindness. I am so grateful. You are opening doors that I am otherwise too lazy and too timid to have found by myself.

Janie I came across this today Tom Wier was a great outdoors man and a friend of my dad. Both loving to head out of the city like a lot of Springburn folk who worked in the railway yards during the week at the weekend they would catch a bus or cycle up to the Trossachs and walk most often stopping for the night in a quiet spot where they would pitch their tent.

My dads first tents were home made with tiking(a tightly woven cotton used for mattresses) which was dipped in alum to make it waterproof. Even when I was young it was a job for the first warmer dry day of spring to dip the tents and spread them over the washing lines to dry ready for the camping season.

Tom was a quietly spoken friendly man with a great love of his country and its beauty. His Sister Molly Weir was a well known brittish actress and writer of cookery books.

Not entirely sure Janie sheep get blamed for a lot as areas were cleared for livestock.

Glad to hear you are starting to rebuild strength When my Dauvit and I were courting he was running me to the airport when I told him I didn't like to kiss an ashtray, he opened the window of the car and threw the packet he had just bought out of it he never smoked again from that day.

Now as long as you don't do what several of the old lads did when we moved in here you will be alright, they got their hands on three mobility scooters and were racing them up and down the road like boy racers.

Oh my, Megan. That is nearly a hurricane force 'breeze!' It definitely seems you live in a wild, severe, and beautiful place where one is ever reminded that we are but part of powerful nature, and not the rulers of nature.

I have enjoyed and appreciate all the links so many have shared, but especially enjoy all your videos that provide these lovely walking tours. In this most recent, what happened to all the trees? He mentions the wild hyacinths are evidence that the glen was once quite forested. Where I am from, in West Virginia, much of the place has been clear cut at one time or another, but most of those clear cut slopes somehow reforest themselves within 50-75 years.

Re: wt. on the leg, starting this past Monday, 25% of my weight, and doing laps in the house with the walker to promote healing and bone strengthening. Still using the wheelchair for two-handed tasks, or for lengthy distances. Have also been released to drive locally, as long as I use good sense about my endurance with the walker, or have access to an electric cart in stores.

Not celebrating yet because it has not been that long - but no cigarettes since 9/15 when I fell. Longest period of time in 45 years I have managed without a cigarette. Gonna get fat again if I keep it up - but maybe my bones won't break so easily next fall.

Hi Janie hope the weather is being nice where you are today. I wont be outside today the winds are around 70mph part of the reason very few trees in Orkney grow above the level of the nearest house and our few woods rather resemble giant green mushrooms in shape as each tree dares to grow a few inches higher from the edge to the centre of the wood.

Today I found this video A walk up the Sma Glen I love his voice.

Hope you are improving have you been able to put weight on the injured leg yet or is that still a while away?

Yes, Chantylass. Right now they are sending both an OT and a PT out to the house a couple of times a week and I have about an hour's worth of exercises to do twice a day. PT for the leg is somewhat limited in scope until I can start putting some weight on it - hopefully next week.

Here is the motivational video I'm focusing on now:>) When the leg is better than new!

Janie, you'll get physical therapy, won't you? It's a big help but never enough in my experience. Of course you can continue to exercise on your own after insurance stops covering therapy. Joining the Y and using equipment and taking yoga classes there has been a good for me.
