Though not written by him (according to the source I found, at least), this song seems to very accurately describe David "Stringbean" Akeman's life, who is the first person I heard sing it. A child during the Great Depression, Stringbean was known to be fearful of the banks (so much so that he was sadly murdered by some thieves looking for his hidden money. They didn't find it, but it was found a couple of years ago in a brick in his fireplace, deteriorated beyond use), and didn't spend his large sums of money on earthly things, even living on his farm. His one indulgence, however, was his 1974 Cadillac Coup de Ville.

Dumb correction I realized several years ago, but forgot I had posted these here until now: the first line is not "The valley which is green" but instead is "Valley rich as cream"
