I have only one CD by Irish folk group, Nightnoise called,
"The Parting Tide" from 1990 released on Windham Hill Records.

I love the voice of Triona but there are only two songs with vocals on this CD, which are "Island of Hope and Tears" and "Snow is Lightly Falling." The other seven songs are instrumentals. Though they are also lovely songs, I do prefer more vocals on an album.

Someone gave me this CD a long time ago and I am not that familiar with Nightnoise. I wanted to ask if anyone knows of their other albums that have majority of songs with vocals (with Triona singing but not acapella.)

Perhaps this group does mostly instrumentals - which is fine, as they are a very talented group, but I just prefer to hear more vocals especially when I really like the voice of the singer as I do with Triona.

I looked at one web site of their albums but could not tell how many were vocals by Triona and not acapella. (spelling?) :-)

Thank you.
Lin

I have three albums by them. They are mostly an instrumental group I think. The ones I have tend to be .

if you like Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill's singing look for other albums that she features on. Tríona and her brother, the late Micheál O Domhnaill returned to Ireland some years ago. discography

You may also enjoy the singing of Mairéad Ní Dhomhnaill, Tríona's sister, who has a richer tone of voice.

Nightnoise is one of a number of albums that came out of the Windham Hill label that afforded traditional musicians a way to make more pop-friendly music without sacrificing their reputations. These were picked up by what were called "new age" enthusiasts.

I don't remember who it was but I've a memory of a trad musician wryly commenting about someone else "eh, they've gon uo Windham Hill" but admitting that the income from that supported their ability to play more traditional music. To my ear, "new age" stuff was mushy and spaced out music - acoustic wallpaper with the traditional music foundation giving it enough substance to be attractive. Like many other ways that lure unsuspecting people into the trad fold, it serves a good purpose.

YMMV

Joanne in Cleveland (who cherishes 1 Windham Hill album)
