Sing Out Magazine ?

I just tried reading Sing Out! via Zinio on my laptop, and it also matches the print copy exactly. The desktop/laptop Zinio reader has several reader controls along the bottom of the screen that you can use to set preferences for layout, zoom in, etc. The only real difference for me is that reading while holding the tablet in my hands feels a bit more like reading a print magazine. But content wise, there's no difference.

It also occurred to me that you might be able to find copies of Sing Out! in your area library, if that's convenient in terms of location and schedule. Perhaps you could even read the digital edition that way.

Lin - I still have a landline too - and a very old home phone that isn't portable, so I can relate! I'm in NY, and I usually use a Kindle reader on the subway, but often read print books at home, so I like both. I used to notice more Kindles on the subway, but now I see mainly cell phones/tablets or actual print books. I'll have to notice next time I take the railroad here (as opposed to the subway). I have a feeling most people on those trains will be reading electronically.

Jane - I hope you enjoy using Zinio if you decide to try it. I've used it for magazines that are now only digital, or in cases where the digital version costs much less than the print version. I think that Sing Out! has made the digital version free for print subscribers - I seem to remember that's how I ended up with both versions.

It is definitely still available in print form, it says so on their website. I would love to receive it in print but as I'm in the UK the cost for doing this is high. I still prefer paper versions of media but in this case it's too expensive, which is a shame! I am going to try downloading Zinio - thanks Zhenya.

It's kind of funny, but whenever I ride the Metrolink train to L.A.
NO ONE HAS A BOOK IN THEIR HAND ANYMORE - NOT EVEN A SMALL BOOK OR A NEWSPAPER. Everyone around me is reading a book on a digital device and I think I am the only one actually reading an actual newspaper. I take the train at different times, sit in different cars - but all around me everyone has tablets and Smart Phones. I never see anyone with a newspaper. Yeah, books can get heavy (depending on the size) but I still love to read an actual old fashioned book (not digital) and newspapers that I take with me on the train and buses.
I get two different newspapers delivered as well.
I guess I live in the dark ages accept for having one home computer. ha, ha, ha. I don't mind though. Oh, I still have a landline which I use more then a cell phone.   
So seems like Sing Out has joined the tech world perhaps. :-)

The digital versions are exactly the same as the print versions, just digital. Everything is there, including any ads. It looks like each page was scanned as is and made available on the computer. I just checked my last print issue against the same digital issue on my tablet, and any particular page number matches up exactly. I don't have my laptop on right now and it's late. But I'll also check this on there in the next few days. From what I recall, it's the same setup.

I do a lot of digital reading, but I know what you mean about having the print version to keep. So far I haven't heard that the print version has been discontinued, but I don't know where things will go in the future. I've heard money is tight, and apparently the actual staff working to put out each issue is small. Both of these things could cause delays. I hope the magazine can continue in some form.

As I mentioned in my post (the ones before yours) I do not have a
Smart Phone or internet on my cell phone at all. (cell phone for phone calls only.) I also do not own a Tablet or any other tech. device other then a home computer.

You mentioned getting issues digitally on an application called Zineo. Of course I am not familiar with that as I do not have a device to get applications. I don't really know much about applications anyway, as I do not own devices to get them. So, question - when you read it on your home computer are you getting the exact same information from the magazine that you would if you had a Smart Phone or Tablet? Or are there differences if you are only able to read it on a home computer?

So the magazine is not in print at all anymore (physical magazine)?
(Since the Pete Seeger one?)
That is disappointing (to me) as I much prefer to actually have the magazine in my hands to read & keep.

I've had a subscription for a long time. I think the last issue came out over a year ago.
It's the one with Pete Seeger on the cover that's listed as the current issue on the SO website. I've also been reading the issues digitally for awhile using the Zineo app / website. I've used that for some tech magazines that are now only digital, and it works pretty well. I usually use it on a tablet, but you can read the magazines on a desktop or laptop as well.

Is the magazine still in print? Several years ago I used to be able to buy it at a book & magazine store in Ontario, California.
The vendor who supplies the store with their magazines (many are music related) used to bring it to the store (4 x a year) It was actually special ordered because the store did have it in their magazine system at that time. Then the vendor for the store
(not an employee of the store) stopped bringing it and the manager of the store told me they could no longer get it from their vendor.
Apparently vendor could not get it from whatever source he/she was ordering at the time.

Barnes & Noble (another store) also does not and cannot get it as it is not in their system of magazines in their computer.
They also carry quite a lot of music magazines but not Sing Out.
I had a manager of that store look it up in their system too but not in their system to order.

So why is this magazine so hard to find now? Years ago when Tower Records were still around in California - (some stores would have it but not all locations) but of course that store is long gone here.

At one time, back in the 1980's or early 90's a friend gave me a 1 year subscription but the magazine always came late (meaning when stores out here used to carry it) I would get it at least 3 to 4 weeks later, after the stores already had it in stock on their shelves. I thought that when you subscribe you would get the magazine before it got to the stores or at least around the same time. I had not moved - same address and got several other magazines at that time - which always came on time but Sing Out was always really late. I loved the magazine and would like to find it again (if it still is in print.)?? I do not own a Smart Phone or tablet so I would like to find it in a store again.

I want to subscribe to the digital edition of Sing Out as it's expensive to subscribe to paper copies as I'm in the UK. But when I tried to download a sample it wouldn't download to my computer or my smartphone - it said I needed to download some software or something. Really it should be easier to download...

I put Bob in contact with Mark Moss, editor of Sing Out!. Mark said there are major changes to the magazine that will be announced soon. Right now, the magazine's Facebook page is very active, and there's a podcast that seems to be coming out regularly - maybe even weekly.

It would seem that the organizations that were partially subsidized by the Seeger family are in trouble--Sing Out!, Clearwater and probably others which are not as salient to us.

I can't remember when I last got a print issue of the magazine - sometime last year, I think. Their news page (click) has information as recent as July, 2015 - so apparently there's still something happening there. Their Facebook page is still very active, with posts from administrators in September, 2015.
I emailed David Baskin, President of the Sing Out! organization. I'll let you know if I get a response.

Sorry you are having such difficulty in reaching Sing Out.

I can understand your frustration. Off the music subject here but recently I was trying to contact a cookie company because the store where I was buying it from no longer carry it. I had the empty bag from the cookies (they were called Biscotti's) and found a phone number on the back of the bag for the company that makes them. In USA.

So I called them during the day hours (phone number was good) as their voice mail identified the company name. (I think they were in the mid-west) and got their voice mail. So...I too left a message with my name and phone number and left a brief message as to what I was calling about. I spoke clearly and listened back to my message - it was fine. Well they too never called me back after leaving three messages on different weekdays. Each time, I left my name and phone number including area code, etc. BUT they never called me either!!!

So I can understand your frustration.

Hopefully Sing Out will still contact you.

Twenty years ago, when Walt Robertson passed away, Mark Moss asked me to write his obit for Sing Out ... "Last Chorus." I did that. I'm trying to contact them this time and offering to write the obit for Don Firth.

BUT ... it's difficult to communicate with people who don't communicate.

Did you call the toll free 800 number? Sometimes that can be a problem to actually reach someone. Better to call the local number if you can.
