Does anybody know how to get a multi-page music score in PDF onto a Sony PRS-505 ebook reader in a format you can actually read?

Viewing the PDF on the device gives me "Protected page" when I try to look at anything, and Calibre's EPUB conversion doesn't seem to work (the first page is the music with random bits missing and thereafter it's odd bits of text taken from the file, no graphics).

I have both PPC and Intel Macs running Mac OS 10.4.11.

Get a Windows or Linux box. Plenty of options then.

There are also web-based converters (probably all running on Linux) and they don't seem to do any better than what I can do on the Mac, i.e. convert single pages and fuck up anything larger.

There must be somebody with a clue out there.

The PDF format includes options for authors to obfuscate the contents, so that the file is unfit for any processing other than plain display. This might be the meaning of "Protected page". I guess that your ebook reader tries to split the file into smaller pages and thus fails.

I do not think that multi-page as such is the problem. To find out, try non-obfuscated PDF text files.

Where are your PDFs from?

They're generated by abcm2ps, either on my Mac or (using a slightly later and differently configured version) on mandolintab.net. I didn't specify any obfuscation when creating them.

PDF on the Sony requires me to generate pages sizeds for its screen, it doesn't scale that format. So EPub would be better if I can create it.

Does the Sony accept any other multi-page PDF files at all?

A quick Googling yields a couple of tools producing ePubs; one is named "Calibre". Good luck.

Calibre is what I've been using (and, I think, what some of the web servers use). It isn't very good.
