Subject: Lyr Req: I Shall Wear a Crown - Arizona Dranes
From: crownbluesking

Need help with verse 3 - Thanks!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79hhWYVY75s

Watching therefore, you know not the day
When the Lord shall call your soul away
If you're fighting, striving for the right
You shall wear a golden crown

I tell you I, I shall wear a crown x2
Oh, When the trumpet sounds (When that trumpet sounds) x2
Oh, I shall wear a golden crown
In heaven I, I shall wear a crown x2
Oh when, that trumpet sounds
Oh, I shall wear a crown
I tell you I shall wear a golden crown

Don't delight in the foolish words of men
For he's coming and you know not when
Have your lamppost trimmed and burning bright
You shall wear a golden crown

Chorus
Solo

They took my blessed savior, nailed him to the tree
victory

Chorus

The chorus parts are the parts the chorus sings, and Arizona sings basically the same thing over-top of them at a different speed.

I also found that this one is typically called "Watch Ye, Therefore" due to the fact that it has the same name as another gospel song. Her version is different from those lyrics, too, though, except the first verse and some of the chorus.

WATCH YE, THEREFORE

Watch ye therefore, you know not today
When the Lord shall call your soul away
If you're laboring, strivin' for the right
You shall wear a golden crown

I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown.
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds ohhhhh
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown.
I shall wear a golden crown

I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds ohhhhh
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

Don't be like the foolish words of men
For He is coming and you know not when
Have your lamppost trimmed and burning bright
You shall wear a golden crown

I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds ohhhhh
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds ohhhhh
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

[Instrumental break]

They took my blessed savior, nailed him to the tree
Hear the heavin' ringin' by the victory
Oh dear won't ya put the Savior down
But for me to hold the crown

I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds ohhhhh
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

You can hear Arizona Dranes sing this on YouTube.

Thanks, it's fascinating, especially when Arizona and the chorus are singing in counterpoint.

But I think it looks more like Lyr Add than Lyr Req.

The first two verses of this song borrow from the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, (Matthew 25: 1-13), with a direct quote from 25:13.   The last verse refers to the crucifixion.

Watch ye therefore you know not the day
When the Lord shall call your soul away.
If you're laboring, striving for the right
You shall wear a golden crown

Don't be like the foolish virgins then
For he's coming, and you know not when
Have your lamp soaked, trimmed and burning bright
You shall wear a golden crown!

They took my blessed savior, nailed him to the tree
Hear the hammer ringing, cried out victory
From his wounds the blood come streaming down
Won for me a golden crown

Thank you, Guest. That's more accurate and makes sense. It's a pleasure to listen to the video and read your words.

Thanks, GUEST, those were the parts I struggled the most transcribing. Your suggestions make a lot of sense

Only one suggested revision to the above:

"Don't be like the foolish virgins TEN
For he's coming, and you know not when
Have your lamp soaked, trimmed and burning bright
You shall wear a golden crown!" (capitalized for emphasis)

This whole verse is a reference to the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew chapter 25. Half of them did not have their lamps read so they were unable to go to the wedding feast (symbolically warning Christians that they have to be ready for salvation as the world could end at any time, just like wedding feast of this parable could start at any time). Outside of James 1:12 "he shall receive the crown of life") this is probably the most clear cut scriptural reference, in a time when many of these hymns were at least loosely inspired and often consciously developed to relate the content of specific Bible passages. Thus, it's likely part of the backbone of the song's composition.

That is a very logical and fair assumption and explanation. So, collating the last decade of corrections (plus a handful of minor ones I added this morning), we have:

Watch ye therefore you know not the day
When the Lord shall call your soul away
If you're laboring, striving for the right
You shall wear a golden crown

I tell you I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

In Heaven I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

Don't be like the foolish virgins ten
For He's coming, and you know not when
Have your lamp soaked, trimmed and burning bright
You shall wear a golden crown

I tell you I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

I know that I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown

They took my blessed Savior, nailed Him to the tree
Hear the hammer ringing, quite a victory
From his wounds the blood come streaming down
Won for me a golden crown

I tell you I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
When the trumpet sounds, when the trumpet sounds
I shall wear a crown, I shall wear a crown
I shall wear a golden crown
