Hi mary

I have watched this thread go un answered and I'm surprised. I like St John's stuff a lot and its hard to find out much bout him. I know he wrote a ton of Dublin songs and then he started doing other stuff.

Donegal Danny is one his I think. So is The Galway Rover which i can't find lyrics to. I think Rings End Rose is too. I wonder if he played with The Dublin City Ramblers for awhile.

I am trying to find my Pete St. John songbook. It is around here somewhere. That is not his real name, but it escapes me just now. He worked with Danny Doyle for a bit. I don't think he was with the Ramblers, but I will ask the lads when next I see them. They will be back in my neck of the woods in the next few months. .........back to finding that book, then I will try to answer the questions.

I have just had a look at one of my Dubliners LPs. They credit Donegal Danny to Coulter/Martin. I have managed to find a couple of other songs mentioned in Folksongs and Ballads popular in Ireland (volume 4 - I've lost the other ones). They do credit Pete St John with The Rare Ould Times but if I'm reading their notes correctly, it appears that Limerick Your'e a Lady was written by Dennis Allen - they mention he had a hit with it and don't say that it was written by anyone else.

One thing about fields of Athenry turned up in a thread on the Mudcat - Pete St John's words are only slightly rewritten from a song extant in 1888. The minor shifts in words, whoever made them, are probably an improvement I'd say, but I'd definitely call it a new variant rather than a new song.

Though it's possible that the tune might be original to him.

Either way it's a good song, and I don't suppose whoever wrote it back before 1888 will mind (I think it was a fella called Devlin)

"Limerick you're a Lady" was certainly written by Denis Allen. I think that Pete St. John has a C.D out, at least he was on Irish Radio plugging something a few weeks back. Was "Limerick" the first song written about that place, now unfortunately stuck, unfairly many say, with the name "Stab City"

I wonder why I think of Pete St. John and Phil Coulter as interchangable people when clearly they are seoarate individuals. I wasn't even 50 yet when I answered this post way back when. Not nearly as embarassing a s crediting I'm So Lonesome I could Cry with Ira gershwin. but its close.

According to ASCAP ACE search, the songs you've listed were written by Peter Henry Mooney. That may help in finding sheet music. May not. Galway Rover shows as having been recorded by Cherish The Ladies, Dan Doyle and D. Doyle. I love this song and would really like to find piano/keyboard music for it!

Here's the Pete St John website - well it's actually a page on it with his World Cup song, where you get get a nice sound file of it in Japanese.

And in case any read this thread without clicking through, that story about the Fields of Athenry being printed first in 1888 seems pretty clearly to have been a hoax, so disregard my earlier post.

The version of Johnny McGorey in the DT needs some serious cleaning up and, probably, some explanatory notes. If you post it from the book, Joe, I can have a go at the latter.

Can't say I've ever heard it sung, despite the Dubliners reference.

Under "works," the Pete St. John Home Page has a number of songs with lyrics and recordings, but the names of the singers aren't identified. The voice on "Athenry" is female, so I'm sure THAT singer isn't Pete. Are any of his recordings available? I sure can't find them at US sources.
Or is he one of those songwriters whose songs are better sung by others?

Hey, Johnny McGory, tell me, where's your glory gone
I saw you up in the monto with your old leg gone
A dirty Flanders bullets, sure it left you half a man

Up to Sally gardens, around the back of the pipes

Dave

I haven't had a chance to pick through it yet but I'm sure the "Iveagh" reference is to the Iveagh Hostel in Dublin. Reckon you're right on "dregs". The sense of the third line is really "On Friday, (our) hero is on the touch" (i.e. begging/scrounging).

As usual with Pete St. John, the references are densely local.

Gloucester Diamond is a streetname in Dublin - mentioned in several songs.

"The Back of the Pipes" is a local name for an area near the Guinness Brewery - where the canal harbour was, IIRC.

"Sally Gardens" is nagging at me - I OUGHT to know where it is!

Red Biddy is cheap, adulterated alcohol.

"Libert belles" refers to women from the Liberties area of inner city Dublin.

For Guest Sue from Guest Maureen,
I met Peter Mooney at his parents house at Christmas time 1953. He was going to sail just after that to Canada. He is by way of being a cousin, his grandmother and my gt.grandmother were sisters.   I didn't realise that he had changed his name till another cousin told me. The family were/are very musical. One of his ancesters blew the charge of the Light Brigade.   He must be in his mid to late seventies as I am.

What are the most frequently asked Questions about your work?

Wednesday, January 1st, 2003

1. What year did you write the Fields of Athenry?
2. Where in Ireland is Athenry ?
3. Isn’t the song a traditional song and re- written by you?
4. What is the Mero?

Answers!

1. I wrote the Fields of Athenry in the middle 1970’s and it was finally recorded and released in 1979 by Danny Doyle and became a top 10 hit and the rest is history !

2. The Athenry in question is Athenry in Galway and if you do happen to get the chance to visit, you will notice the ‘Low lying fields’ as you approach this beautiful town.

Do visit the Cultural centre and say Pete sent you !

3. No, the song is not a traditional song even though it is written in that traditional style it is a modern composition by myself, both lyrics and music.

4. The Mero was an old cinema at Mary street in downtown Dublin in the 1940’s - 1950’s. The characters like Jonny 40 coats and Bang Bang were street people of that era, a more gentle and simple time. And while we queued up in the street for the cheap afternoon seats (called Woodeners), we would jokingly jeer and taunt ‘The Characters’ who happened to pass by. Many of the people in the song are now gone and forgotten but not by me ! They were a vital part of my childhood in the ‘Rare Oul Times in Dublin’ !! The song is a little social diary of the times but even today the memories of ‘The Mero’ days are still with me big time. Thanks to everyone who was interested enough to ask about the song.

Dia ghuit !
Pete

Hi,
Pete Mooney (St. John) is my cousin and I too remember going to one of the great Christmas do's at his father's house in Lavarna Grove, Terenure. His father, our Uncle Tommy, was a manager at Fords of Ireland, I think. He drove a new Ford Corsair when I met him in 1963. I was well impressed as a 15 year old lad!
After his travels around North America, Pete has been back in Dublin for a good few years now.
Sadly his wife, Sue Mooney, died last week.
A previous poster here, Maureen, said she is related. Well, I guess she must be related to me too!
Drop me an email if you read this.... desbrittain@hotmail.com.

the skin as black as coal line, is a bit suspect, the rare oluld times is reactionary in the sense it is backward looking as regards the social comment of it
here are the lyrics

Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.
Raised on songs and stories, heroes of renown,
The passing tales and glories, that once was Dublin town,
The hallowed halls and houses, the haunting children's rhymes,
That once was Dublin city, in the Rare Oul Times.
Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.
My name it is Sean Dempsey as Dublin as could be
Born hard and late in Pimlico in a house that ceased to be
My trade I was a cooper, lost out to redundancy
Like my house that fell to progress my trade's a memory
And I courted Peggy Dignan, as pretty as you please,
A rogue and child of Mary, from the rebel liberties,
I lost her to a student chap, with skin as black as coal,
When he took her off to Birmingham, she took away my soul.
Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.
The years have made me bitter, the gargle dims me brain
'Cause Dublin keeps on changing and nothing seems the same.
The Pillar and the Met have gone, the Royal long since pulled down
As the grey unyielding concrete makes a city of my Town.
Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.
Fare thee well sweet Anna Liffey, I can no longer stay,
And watch the new glass cages, that spring up along the quay,
My mind's too full of memories, to old to hear new chimes,
I'm a part of what was Dublin, in the Rare Oul Times.
Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.
Ring a ring a rosie as the lights declines,
I remember Dublin city in the rare oul times.

it seems conservative and against change as well as backward looking nothing about the terrible slums of Dublin Some criticism of the grey concrete and town planning, was dublin city so great in the rare ould times apparantly
It is Dublin that is most notorious in this respect, particularly in the city's tenements. The city had, 100 years ago, the worst housing conditions of any city in the United Kingdom. What was particularly striking about Dublin's extensive slums was that they were not limited to the back streets or to ghettos. 29 sep 2012
so dublin in 1912, had terrible slums

Tenement conditions were still lousy in the 1930s, evictions of tenants flea infested slums in 1934 the lyrics of this song do not deal with that at all. The lyrics of rare ould times look back at the 1912 and the 1930s dublin slums through rose tinted spectacles

I'll be doing The Rare Ould Times and others that may be questionable by today's standard this Thursday at a local AOH. The people who will request it are all in their 70s now. I think they'll ask because it reminds them of the Dublin they left and not the Dublin as it has become.

Changing times are happening all around us. I forget who said it, probably George Carlin, "There ain't no present. There is only the near future and the recent past."

Pete St. John had an elegant simplicity in his lyrics.

The Dublin they left,Would have been the fifties and sixties
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOZDcuyH4VA
From 1840s until 1970s Dublin was blighted with the worst slums in all of Europe. Generation after generation of poor Dubliners would be forced into the disease ridden tenements to survive. This is the first documentary of note to tackle this sad and under-reported subject.
PETE ST JOHN sentimentalises Dublin and is an example of rose tinted spectacles.

My take on the line is that Pete St John( Sean Dempsey)recognised that the world was changing and that generations in the not too distant future will all be a shade of brown. After all the song was written not too long after the segregation - desegregation clashes of the 60s in the US, and even today   mixed race marriages cause friction in certain societies

He wrote some cracking songs that seem more folk than folk.(at the risk of opening the hoary old argument about what is folk)

I find your interpretation to be something of a stretch. The point is surely that the colour of the student chap's skin doesn't inform the story of the song at all and is a gratuitous inclusion. Had his girlfriend been spirited away by a white student, skin colour wouldn't have been mentioned. The line has been commented on many times. Either he never noticed that, so it never occurred to him to revise it, or he was aware of the criticism and stood firm, which, if true, could be telling us something about him.

As I said, I like many of his songs and I shall dwell no more on this aspect. All good wishes to his family and friends.

Half of all songs ever made sentimentalize some time and place, and are "example[s] of rose tinted spectacles". The other half are love songs. Of course, half of all songs fit into both categories; i.e., love songs that sentimentalize some time and place and are "example[s] of rose tinted spectacles".

Meself
No, untrue in the folk repertoire we have songs of fishing, songs about poaching, shanties, songs that involve transportation for poaching or stealing songs
amongst modern songs let us compare st johns "rare ould times" with MacColls Dirty old town, which is the most accurate...one shows sentiment one is sentimental, rare ould times also has a blatant racist line or compare it, to The town i loved so well
let us compare rare ould times to fields of athenry.
Lyrics
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away
For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
this song has sentiment but is accurate and not sentimenbtal
as is
The town I loved so well

In my memory I will always see
The town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the gas-yard wall
And we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane
Past the jail and down behind the fountain
Those were happy days in so many, many ways
In the town I loved so well

In the early morning the shirt factory horn
Called women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog
While the men on the dole played a mother's role,
Fed the children and then walked the dogs
And when times got tough there was just about enough
But they saw it through without complaining
For deep inside was a burning pride
In the town I loved so well

There was music there in the Derry air
Like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day that I earned my first pay
When I played in a small pick-up band
There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
For I learned about life and I'd found a wife
In the town I loved so well

But when I returned how my eyes have burned
To see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
And the gas that hangs on to every breeze
Now the army's installed by that old gasyard wall
And the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns, oh my God, what have they done
To the town I loved so well

Now the music's gone but they carry on
For their spirit's been bruised, never broken
They will not forget but their hearts are set
On tomorrow and peace once again
For what's done is done and what's won is won
And what's lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright, brand new day
In the town I loved so well
Fields of Athenry, Dirty old Town and The Town I loved so well, Are better for a reason they do not contain a racist line they are accurate social comnent they have sentiment without being inaccurately sentimental, they do not look back at the past with rose tinted spectacles

on the subject of songs about towns or areas it also falls short in comparison to Ring f Iron by graeme miles
It's all around the town
All around the town
It's all around the town
This hard ring of iron
There's smoke up in the sky
Smoke up in the sky
There's smoke that's black and chimney stacks
As far as the eye can see
There's shipyards to the north
Chemicals to the south
Factories, stills and rolling mills
Right down to the river's mouth
But there's fields and pastures green
Fields and pastures green
There's fields and pastures green
Outside this ring of iron
So it's out of town I'm bound
Out of town I'm bound
It's out of town I'm bound
And I'll break this ring of iron

The Message of the song is reactionary, and that awful verse

And I courted Peggy Dignan, as pretty as you please,
A rogue and child of Mary, from the rebel liberties,
I lost her to a student chap, with skin as black as coal,
When he took her off to Birmingham, she took away my soul.

I suppose it would have been alright would it if the student chap was a fine upstanding Offaly man, like Biffo big ignorant faeller from offaly its sentimental clap trap with racist undertones and kind of student dislike

The same conversation about that verse seems to be being held in two different threads. Not ideal. I don't like those words much but we should remember that the fellow is no longer here to explain himself. We can sing it, not sing it, alter the words, listen to it or go for a wee when it's being sung. How about that.

Yeah, I'm peeved at Felipa for starting an obituary thread, and then refreshing another thread on Pete St. John songs. It has been a longstanding practice to have only one active thread on a subject at a time. She should know better. She's been told before.
Not knowing what else to do, I've moved all the song messages to this thread. But it would have been better to let the obituary thread live, and to have it open for comments on the life of Pete St. John and discuss the songs later.

This is a music forum and songs should be able to be discussed, it is not my fault if Felipa starts threads , Joe if you dont like it close the thread until you feel it is suitable and a polite time after his death, after all I am only discussing and comparing two of his songs not discussing him personally.

Anyway - you don't seem terribly interested in discussion; rather, you're here to lecture us on the demerits of this popular song, apparently. Fair enough. I'm out.

Dublin in the rare ould times has a very catchy singeable melody.

But he tells us the gargle has dimmed his brain."
that does not mean he is a drunk, alcohol even in moderation dims everyones brain, that is why there are drink driving laws, even a pint affects or dims your brain.
no i dont buy that, just because he saysits dimmed his brain does not make him a drunk or alcoholic
and even if he was an embittered old drunk, which is debatable, there is no need for the racist stuff, would it be ok if she had gone off with a dub or a tipperary man

I am fine with Guest Anon not being a fan of Rare Ould Times. I have long had issues with skin as black as coal and have used a few work arounds to get away from it. ( lost her to a student chap one summer after school) Also lame but not blatant. And I have to say I never got the Embittered Drunk idea. I always felt this guy would occasionally get into his cups and remember the past where he grew up. The song has a few warts but otherwise there is a reality to the narrators tale that I can believe.

There are a great many songs of which I am not a fan. And my band does several. To this day I can't see the fascination of Galway Girl. That Steve Earle could write so lame a song as Galway Girl and so near perfect a song as Nothing But A Child baffles me. We do The Old Man which I find too full of sap but not any of the many brilliant Phil Coulter songs.

Pete St. John left a trail of songs. Some are bound to be not his best. Some won't stand the test of time but a few are jewels and they will last.

Don

Skin as black as coal is as racist as saying skin as white as snow.

Its not being derogatory to say skin is black when some peoples skin is black.

Even if it was racist its a character and songs are meant to represent true characters not perfected angels.

As Mudcat's numero uno Liverpool fan, I can't help but post the lyrics of the version of Fields of Athenry as sung by the Kopites (aka the Liverpool FC fanatics who stand behind one of the goals, the end known as the Kop). Here goes. Same tune:

"Fields Of Anfield Road"

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling:
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away...
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Steve Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Beside the Hillsborough Flame
I heard a Kopite mourning
Why so many taken on that day?
Justice has never been done
But their memory will carry on
There'll be glory around the Fields of Anfield Road
