Subject: October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Oct 15 - 03:04 PM Our monthly shanty, forebitter and fo'c's'le ballad session will be this Saturday,October 17th, from 3:30 to 7:30 (or 7:15) PM at The Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH. I need to slip out around 7:15 to get to a friend's concert in Dover, but I'm sure I can entrust the last 15 minutes to some responsible adult. Saturday will be a great opportunity to sing all the songs you either learned at last month's Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival or to sing the songs you didn't get a chance to sing. It is so good to be having regular sessions at The Press Room again! We've got a lot of singing to do to make up for not having the July or August sessions. Hope I see you there and we'll make the rafters roar! Linn |

Subject: RE: October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 18 Oct 15 - 01:26 PM So, how did it go? I'm guessing that it was wonderful! |
Subject: RE: October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Oct 15 - 05:21 PM Small group this month (film festival going on in town as well as other events) but, yes, wonderful. The crew was me (Linn Schulz), Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Susan Young, Tami (Ranger1), Emery Hutchins, Bill Lehrman & Carol Pierson, Don & Cathy Hale, Jeri, Justine Donovan, Carol Coronis, Gail Diderickson and her sister Janice, and Dave Johnson. A couple visiting from north of Toronto found us by accident and really enjoyed finding this kind of music on their visit to Portsmouth. He (don't know their names) came over to talk, asked if we knew the songs of Stan Rogers…and then, despite his wife's urging, refused to lead "Barrett's Privateers". And Dan Young came in a couple times between events at the New Hampshire Film Festival. What we sang was -- 1. Lukey's Boat - Emer Hutchins 2. Merchant's Island - Charlie Ipcar 3. Knickerbocker Line - Linn Schulz 4. Song of the Fishgutters - Susan Young 5. River Lee - Emery Hutchins 6. Cannery Shed [Mary Garvey] - Linn Schulz 7. Bailey's Mistake - Charlie Ipcar 8. Nine Times a Night - Linn Schulz 9. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don Hale 10. Female Drummer - Susan Young 11. Black Bird, Get Up - Jeri 12. Saltpetre Shanty - Don Hale 13. Loon Mountain Lake - Charlie Ipcar 14. The Frozen Logger - Don Hale 15. Drink To the Laddies [Sue West] - Susan Young 16. West Indies Blues - Charlie Ipcar & Emery Hutchins and Charlie retold the story of how he collected it and modified it 17. Old Zeb - Emery Hutchins 18. Sailor's Prayer [Tom Lewis] - Linn Schulz 19. Noah Built the Ark (Sittin' By the River On the Levee) - Sue Young 20. Natchez and the Delta Queen Race - Charlie Ipcar 21. Hey Rain - Emery Hutchins 22. Neptune's Daughter - Susan Young 23. Mollymauk - Jeri 24. Blue Mountain - Emery Hutchins 25. Good-Bye My Riley-O - Justine Donovan 26. Grey Funnel Line - Don Hale 27. The Chanteyman - Charlie Ipcar 28. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn Schulz 29. Yangtze River Blues - Justine Donovan 30. Way hey, Up She Rises / Whitby Maid - Carol Coronis 31. Shake Her, Johnny, Shake Her - Linn Schulz 32. Sugar In the Hold - Susan Young 33. Storm Along, Stormy - Charlie Ipcar 34. Fall Down, Billy O'Shea - Emery Hutchins 35. Brandy-O - Susan Young (and Justine Donovan & Carol Coronis -- 3/4 of London Julie) 36. Land On the Shore - Susan Young 37. Wake Up, Susianna - Charlie Ipcar 38. Sloop John A [Les Barker] - Linn Schulz (As I explained at the Sunday Book & Bar session during the PMFF, there are sea songs that are sad, there are sea songs that are happy, and there are sea songs that sound happy but are sad. This is a song of extreme disappointment.) And, on that note, I had to leave the session in order to get to a Bob Halperin concert at Red & Shorty's in Dover. I left Susan Young to be the responsible adult for the next half hour and to write down the songs that were sung so I could include them here. And I'll post them as soon as she emails them to me. (But she's tied up today at the film festival, I'm sure.) Linn |

Last songs in order: Brandy (You're a fine girl) - Carol Coronis Mobile Bay - Charlie Ipcar Shenandoa - Don Hale Follow the Heron Home - Sue Young Outside Track - Charlie Ipcar Seaman's Hymn [Nelson's Prayer] - Don Hale Don closed us out with that and it was 7:27, when all was said and done.
