I have always thought that using churches for secular things was a worthwhile pursuit. There are churches I have visited that proudly point-out the grooves on the door jam where medieval archers sharpend their arrows. Coffee mornings, children's playtime etc have been popular for a long time. I do remember going to see a play in a church from school. Now there seems to be a trend to place wooden floor areas for dancing and proper facilities with them. It makes good sense.
BTW if you are ever in Hereford go to All Saints Church near Eign Gate, (excellent cafe in a working church) and go upstairs and take a close look at the triangular roof supports at about 10 feet above the floor. Verrrrrry interesting! Well one is!
