Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 25 Oct 15 - 01:52 PM Talking about The Quiet Man, I have a special edition copy DVD of the moviein which one can chose to watch the movie with a running commentary by Maureen. Sounds strange, but it works. BTW, Maureen said that all the external shots were filmed in Ireland, but all the internal shoots were done in Hollywood. I sort of see the film in a different light knowing that. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Oct 15 - 10:23 AM The New York Times got it right when they called up that title "The Queen of Technicolor." The camera loved her. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 25 Oct 15 - 09:49 AM In the 'Quiet Man', the director wanted to achieve a certain(shocked/amazed) expression from John Wayne, while Maureen O'Hara was sitting next to the 'Duke', and asked her to help. She whispered something to Wayne (onscreen- it can be seen in the film) You can judge whether she succeeded by Wayne's reaction! She always refused to say exactly what she'd said to him, so let's hope she told someone, somewhere, before her sad passing.. RIP Ms O'Hara |
Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 25 Oct 15 - 08:51 AM We will be playing St. Patrick's Day Jig in her honor at our gathering this afternoon which seemed to be the musical backdrop of the romance between Mary Kate and Sean in The Quiet Man. She was really something else. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Oct 15 - 03:36 AM But a versatile actress, for all that, and by no means universally 'charming'. Fine performance as the fiery termagant whose aggressiveness earned her that memorable spanking from John Wayne in "McClintock", 1963. She claimed that she had told him to do it 'for real', not the usual histrionic pretence, to bring dramatic conviction: that was the professional that she was — though it is said that she somewhat regretted it in retrospect, hobbling about with bruised buttocks for a day or two! ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Oct 15 - 03:28 AM Thanks for the lovely clip of her singing with Andy Williams, Joe. And what an appropriately self-referential song "Endearing Young Charms" was, to be sure. They were indeed what she possessed a-plenty -- and remained charming even when they had "like fairy gifts, faded away". ≈M≈ |

Subject: Obit: Actress Maureen O'Hara (1920-2015) From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Oct 15 - 11:49 PM From the New York Times:
There's a great article about her in the Los Angeles Times What a beautiful woman she was. Many watched The Quiet Man to see John Wayne, but it was O'Hara's performance in that movie that lingers in my memory. Not a bad singer, either: May she rest in peace. -Joe- |
