Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: LadyJean Date: 14 Nov 15 - 11:15 PM I didn't know where Ellin Vannin was. But I do know that the Manx cat was the last animal on board Noah's Ark, and that's how they lost their tails. |

Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Nov 15 - 04:59 PM Ah, yes. But I don't know of 'manticore' as a breed/type of cat, whereas Sphynx clearly is. Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: GUEST,Blandiver (Astray) Date: 04 Nov 15 - 04:53 PM Ah, Ounce... Sphinx? I had Manticore, which is also a lion with a human head. I once had a teacher who insisted it was pronounced MAN-TICKORY. |

Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Jack Blandiver Date: 02 Nov 15 - 12:16 PM (...some hours later... waking up in a misty fug to the strains of Die Kunst der Fugue...) D'oh! And did I really not know Clowder was the official collective noun? Apparently not. Never mind, I know now. And it's a Kindle of Kittens. Too much alliteration gives me a headache... |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Jack Blandiver Date: 02 Nov 15 - 08:44 AM PS : Another quiz for Ailurophiles from the greatest folk-cat of them all: c. 1972 Which takes it's name from this lovely wee volume of Moggy-lore I picked up on Lancaster market a couple of quid back in January: c. 1946 |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Jack Blandiver Date: 02 Nov 15 - 08:35 AM No allergies, just a natural dislike. I'm quite fond of moggy-lore though - some lovely books on the subject (here's but three). Shots. Is that a hint? |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 02 Nov 15 - 07:59 AM And if you're an ailurophobe you probably need your 'shots'. (Penecillin, anti-histamine . . .) |

Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Nov 15 - 05:33 AM A gill is indeed ¼-pint in S England, but if you ask for 'a gill' in a Yorkshire pub you will be given ½-pint. Many years ago I had a girlfriend from Keighley, Yorkshire, whose surname was Gill [a widespread local name] and her nickname at school had been "Halfpint", she told me. Confusing, eh wot·wot!? ≈M≈ Even (not to drift) my cat Cleo admits to being confused. |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: GUEST,Ebor Fiddler Date: 01 Nov 15 - 07:07 PM I never knew I was an ailuraphile! I'll tell the Boss when she wakes up. |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Nov 15 - 03:34 PM Thompson: Yes, a 'gill' is a quarter pint. One fifth of a gill was the pre-metric standard measure (for a 'single' measure of spirits) in Scotland. Down south the standard was slightly smaller at 1/6th of a gill. But at least this meant you could get an exact number of measures (32) from a standard spirits bottle. A standard spirits bottle was 1/6th of a gallon (although usually stated in other measures - hence the connection in the quiz) Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Ailurophile Quiz From: Thompson Date: 30 Oct 15 - 04:47 AM Oh, just realised what one-fifth of a gill must be. Handy! Now i can remember how much a gill is when following old recipes! |

If you remember the film, Dorothy, the Scarecrow & the tin woodcutter are going along chanting "..... & ...... & ....., Oh my!" Cheers Nigel |
