Subject: RE: Karaxu - Chilean group From: Jack Campin Date: 31 Oct 15 - 09:23 PM Yes, he was the person who brought the band together. He was closely associated with Violeta Parra. Lots of details about relationships between different musicians on the Chilean left in Fairley's work - her enthusiasm is catching. |

Subject: Karaxu From: Jack Campin Date: 26 Oct 15 - 08:07 PM This was prompted by a thread on the Chilean group Inti-Illimani, who are fairly well known worldwide. We don't seem to have any mention on Mudcat of Karaxú, a Chilean group that I found far more exciting and politically inspiring. There isn't much about them on the web in English. The largest source is the writings of Jan Fairley, an Edinburgh musicologist who I knew slightly (not well enough to realize she'd died in 2012; I have a lot of world music CDs that had been sent to her for review, which I bought from the annual Christian Aid sale a couple of years ago, wondering who the previous owner had been; her family must have donated them). There is quite a bit of their stuff on YouTube now. Fairley's thesis: https://www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/7223 More from Fairley in a more general book: http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781472412669 They seem to have dissolved in 1978, not long after I saw them in an unforgettable concert in Edinburgh. A history from one of their members, in book form in Spanish: http://www.lom.cl/36969cb5-73f2-48d9-ae5b-9f677456d1ec/Historia-del-grupo-musical-%C2%A1Karax%C3%BA!-%281974-1978%29-perder-la-paciencia.aspx There doesn't seem to be any handily potted Wikipedia-like summary of their work in any language. |
