I was delighted to hear an old favorite pulled out on Cousin Jimmy's show on WRUW. He's been playing folk on radio for 30+ years, and went to vinyl to play "Mallon's Bridge" off an early Mustard's Retreat album. Michael Hough's superb spooky storytelling in this song is underscored * by tin whistle and atmospheric melody on fiddle (that I think was played by Garnet Rogers).

Joanne I'm Cleveland

* every time I pun, even mild ones, I think of Art

How's about The Murder Of Maria Marten, preferably the No Roses version complete with sinister crunching gravel...

In that case, try Jean Redpath's "Clerk Saunders."

We played "The Unquiet Grave" on the Ozark Folk Center show this morning.

A friend of mine once said that the tune of "Charlie is My Darling," played at funereal tempo, was very creepy.

I'm creating a playlist for friends, pulling in the creepiest songs for Halloween. There have to be a lot of gems in the folk canon.

I'm thinking along the lines of O Death or a funereal-sounding House of the Rising Sun. Any suggestions?

Happy Halloween!
