Does anyone know of any secular lyrics written to go with the tune known as "O Holy Night" in English, and "Cantique de Noël" or "Minuit, chrétiens" in French?

This thread contains both the original French and the conventional English lyrics.

This is a song I have mixed feelings about. It's a little too pretentious for my tastes, but yet it's a catchy melody and I have a good time singing it.

"The Internationale" is similar. It's catchy, but quite pretentious.

But hell, I like singing both songs.

I love playing it on the piano. I try to forget the lyrics (not easy to do) and make it a musical story about humble people experiencing a miracle.

Subject: Lyr Add: PETER COTTONTAIL (from Gene Autry)

'Oh, Holy Night' isn't really a 'secular song'...nor was it composed to be a 'secular song'. However, during Easter, you could strike up a a 'hip version' of 'Here comes Peter Cottontail'.

'Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin' down the bunny trail,
Hippity hoppity,
Easter's on its way

Bringin' ev'ry girl and boy
A basketful of Easter joy
Things to make your Easter
Bright and gay

He's got jelly beans for Tommy
Colored eggs for sister Sue
There's an orchid for your mommy
And an Easter bonnet too. Oh!

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin' down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppity
Happy Easter Day

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin' down the bunny trail
Look at him hop and listen to him say,

"Try to do the things you should"
Maybe if you're extra good
He'll roll lots of Easter eggs your way

You'll wake up on Easter morning
And you'll know that he was there
When you find those choc'late bunnies
That he's hiding ev'rywhere,
Oh!

Here' comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin' down the bunny trail
Hippity hoppity
Happy Easter Day'

Secular enough for ya'??

Hmmm. GfS, I'm having a little trouble making "Peter Cottontail" fit the tune of "O Holy Night." Here Comes Peter Cottontail was written in 1949 by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins. The published "Frosty the Snowman" in 1950. Note the similarity: hipity-hop-hop vs thumpety-thump-thump. Gene Autry recorded them both.

Well, I never thought of trying to put THOSE lyrics with 'O Holy Night'...nor was I aware of a 'secular' version of 'O Holy Night'....jeez, why would someone want to do that?...why not just write/compose another song?...How about,..ummm...how about, 'Get Off My Cloud' or 'Can't Get No Satisfaction'???..........(wink).

OP: "secular lyrics written to go with the tune known as "O Holy Night"

This is an example of what is wrong with so many Americans these days- people are intent on just skimming a line without ever reading it.

I dunno, Ebbie. I think most of us understood the original request. But lacking an answer to the main question, the goofing around keeps the thread alive. Otherwise, the thread would have been dead and forgotten two days ago.

But I really did think GfS was trying to sing "Peter Cottontail" to the tune of "O Holy Night."

No I wasn't, Joe...It was meant facetiously...umm ...perhaps satirically...

Are you considering a COMPLETELY different set of lyrics or modified but still for Christmas?

The Marseillaise was the original tune used for The Internationale, so that would fit.
