New Orleans piano legend Allen Toussaint died tonight after performing a concert in Madrid. Sincere condolences to his family. He was a great musician, songwriter and gentleman. I hope that the long-awaited documentary about his life and music will some day be completed and released.

Thank you,Mary K.
I love New Orleans music and know that Mr. Toussaint was responsible for much of the best. A friend of mine met him in NO some time ago and found him friendly and courteous.
RIP Mt. Toussaint.

Alas - one of the greats of New Orleans - and anywhere, for that matter. One of the most influential musicians of his day. An amazing life.

RIP.

I loved his music and production work. His own dinging was low keyed, but effective and the songs written for New Orleans artists and guest production for acts from Labelle to The Band were all marvelous. A great loss.

While I hate to be the dog in the manger.....mangy dog, arrrgh.....

The Neville Brothers have really mixed feelings about the work they did with him. A little problem of royalties, publishing, ownership, that sort of thing. Well documented I think, otherwise I would not have heard of it. And having said that, this is not an egregious case; plenty of other injustices along this line in the music business. So Toussaint, and for that matter the Neville Brothers, have lots of company.

He is credited with the Lee Dorsey hit "Workin in a Coal Mine" which I regard as a most fitting candidate for a Folk Song from late 20th C pop era.

I understand what you say, keberoxu. The music business was often a shifty, cut-throat affair. Dog eat dog, etc.

But when assessing musical contributions, you have to start with a different slate sometimes.
