Mudcat has so many easterners, it's no surprise it has been silent about the Kansas City Royals (that long-despised team) winning the world series (baseball championship) just now. They defeated the New York Mets.

These teams were so closely matched that one game went on five extra innings, finally ending at 1 am the next day. The DH and I didn't actually watch the games, but we knew what has happening because we could hear the cheers and the moans from all over the neighborhood, coming right through the walls.

The mayor of Kansas City and the mayor of New York had made a bet that the loser would have to sing a song accompanied by ballet dancers. Here's the mayor of New York paying up:

So, I figured this was going to be the Leiber & Stoller Kansas City (they got some crazy little women there and I'm gonna get me...). Or maybe (Everything's Up to Date in Kansas City by Rodgers & Hammerstein. But it's neither, and I'm not sure what it is:

KANSAS CITY

Ah, Kansas City, going to get my baby back home, yeah, yeah
I'm going to Kansas City, going to get my baby back home, yeah, yeah
Well it's a long time (?), since my baby's been gone, yeah, yeah

Ah, Kansas City, going to get my baby one time, yeah, yeah
I'm going to Kansas City, going to get my baby one time, yeah, yeah
It's just a one, two, three four, five, six seven, eight, nine

Little Richard sang this version, and so did The Beatles. Are there older recordings of this song?

Try Wilbert Harrison, Joe.

I'd never heard that song about Kansas City, either.

Did you notice the fine dancing, the pretty girls, the cute lads? Were you impressed that the mayor had the nerve to be recorded singing? (Because a lot of people his age refuse to sing.) Did you enjoy it at all, or did you just worry about its antecedents, as if a song needs a pedigree and your okay.

I can tell you what it is - it's an ordinary pop song.

Hey, leeneia, I'm a song researcher. Of course I'm interested in the origins of the song he's singing. And yes, I think it's pretty classy that he's singing what appears to be an older blues song, and not the usual Leiber & Stoller pop song (although I like the L&S song, too).
But no question, da mayah did a class act.

If we're collecting songs with Kansas City in the title, let's not forget the Roger Miller song, Kansas City Star. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBeXnzjvMrk
