Dave Mallett was here the other day. What he does with a guitar cant be done. I'm so lucky to have such a friend. I haven't even tried to play my Nick Apollonio 12 string, but he can make it talk.
When he laid it down, I was struck by the thought that came to me. I nearly wept. "The harp that once through Tara's halls its soul of music spread, now hangs as mute on Tara's wall as if that soul had fled, so speaks the pride of former days when glory's thrill is o'er for hearts that once beat high with praise now feels that pulse no more. Now I will weep.

One of my few good thyought is that I have had one hell of an interesting life while countless people have struggled in poverty and so many kids dying in childhood.I could write a book on my wonderful life. Come to think of it, I did. Many of you folks have brightened my days, even when I was in the depts. of depression. Thanks so much.

Jacqui's guitar is much easier to play than most. To play my Taylor I often use a capo two frets up. that helps.

Never heard of vinegar for joint pain. It's ironic that I use it for leg cramps and it does help. Can't wait to try it.!

The banjo is being repaired by a top luthier, and although the original value was $2500.00 it has has slipped, it is still worth around $1700.00, (according to the owner of Buckdancers Choice. Shipping is a consideration.That depends on where the buyer is.

I've been following this thread with interest, as a player of various instruments, and someone who has mild arthritis in the thumbs, which has never got beyond a certain stage - no worse than it was 10 or 15 years ago - but you never know. A couple of people have mentioned cider vinegar. I haven't tried it, but know a clog dancer (English clog, not Appalachian clogging) who had trouble with an arthritic big toe a while back. Tried cider vinegar and swore by it. Hasn't mentioned the toe for a couple of years. Soething that hasn't been mentioned is acupuncture. It is uswed to treat arthritis. It apparently doesn't work for everybody, but does for some. It's used on arthritic dogs, so obviously isn't a placebo - try explaining it to Pooch: "now rhis nice man is going to stick some needles in you, and you'll feel better...". It's non-invasive - no drugs or surgery, so if it does no good, it'll do no harm.
As regards alternative instruments, somebody mentioned hammered dulcimer. I met a lady who had the type of arthritis that deforms the fingers. Hers were all bent over sideways, and pretty well useless, but she could grip things between first fingers and thumbs. She had a small dulcimer, which she could carry under her arm, and was able to play this fine. Just a thought if thingss eventually do get worse. Hope not! Enquire about the acupuncture. As I said, it can't do any harm.

I went through a very rough time back there, and I almost gave in and dumped all my instruments out of pique. I had no idea that so many catters were on my side, or were even very aware of who I am. I tell you true, your collective support has been priceless.I thank you all.

I probably will sell the 1927 Vega tubafone. It is a great bluegrass banjo, LOUD. I still have an older Vega open back that is more civilized and better suited to folk music.I will never sell this one. It was given to me by a dear friend who died some years ago. When I go, it goes back to his son where it belongs.

Even if/when there is no hope whatsoever of being able to play, a case can still be made for hanging on to an intrument as an old friend. Clive Woolf has been unable to play his since he was "cut down in his prime" (not actually by a stroke as such, but the same result, hemiplegia), but he still has his guitar.

yeah.. I still pine for the vintage 1960s Vox AC30 I owned for a few months when I was 15 or 16..

I was too young and inexperienced, and easily persuaded to trade it in
for a brand new modern shiny space age HH transistor combo with glowing green panel illumination.... 😢

Since then I've never sold or let go of any musical instruments and equipment.

They'll all have to go one day.. eventually.. but that'll be some one else in the family's problem.....

Kendall, my father was a folk musician for decades, and I found a lot of folk instruments in his collection that I'm pretty sure he didn't know how to play himself. I think he was simply playing the "good host" and keeping instruments available for performers who might drop in to a Song Circle or hoot without every instrument in their repertoire.

Think about that moment when a guest picks up an instrument and makes beautiful music - it's a wonderful moment for both of you. Good instruments will never be neglected if you have friends who come by who can play them.

thanks for the input, Leeneia. I have a great doctor who sent me to a specialist, and it IS arthritis. Donuel, I GAVE MY 100 YEAR OLD VIOLIN TO A FRIEND BECAUSE IT WAS JUST TOO PAINFUL TO PLAY. That left hand position was impossible.
Ok, had to give up singing, no choice, hearing in my left ear,joint pain makes playing painful. looks like I need to adjust. Maybe I'll take up the bagpipes.

I just got an offer from someone who works with senior citizens for me to come and Talk to them. To discuss humor and that sort of thing. Never thought of myself as a teacher, but, who knows?

I second that. I sold my fine Italian cello during a arthritis flare up but the arthritis dissipated. The cello is gone but other cellos with reworked fingerboards require half the pressure.

1. I've been thinking of the book I read (by an M.D.) on repetition stress injuries. The doc specifically mentioned playing with a triangular pick as a cause of injury.

What if your problem is merely soreness or strain caused by using a triangular pick? Rest or treatment might improve it.

You haven't mentioned seeing a specialist. Do you know your problem is arthritis? That it can't be helped?

2. I've been thinking about how I got a cough and cold last May, and it just wouldn't go away. After two months of illness, a big trip motivated me to go to the clinic again, and the clinic nurse packed me off to an M.D.'s office. The M.D. announced, "You know the weather's been rainy for a long time. This is allergies." He prescribed one steroid shot and I was cured.

My point is that we may think we know what's wrong with us, based on "common knowledge," but we can be wrong.

3. I'm glad you are not rushing into things - not ready to stop playing and getting rid of fine instruments right away.

My attitude has improved so much! the mudcat gang has been unbelievable. I went from selling all my instruments to buying another one today. A nylon string SAG model 1066A. Plays like butter, beautiful, light, and the balance is to die for. That E minor is beautiful when I hit that 6th string open.

It was an impulse purchase, I hope I haven't plowed up a snake.

Kendall, I guess you may have noticed that your supporters on here, are really behind you continuing to play.

As far as tendinitis, as someone mentioned earlier, my doctor turned me onto a little trick that works great...let's say it's your left hand that goes numb, take your right hand, and just put pressure above your elbow, of the left hand...as if you're crossing your arms, press into the nerve of the numb arm. The numbness will magically dissipate. You may have to feel around to find the nerve, but once you do, you'll know it. You can also, easily do it on stage, and nobody will know.....just behind the elbow, on the back side.
I hope others reading this, may benefit from this handy little trick.

Regards...and keep playing...we need more musicians, and less politicians!!

The last person that I heard play my Seagull cutaway was beer when he dropped in on a trip east five years or so ago. Cheap guitar but it hadn't been moved from in front of the fireplace for three years due to arthritis and it was still in perfect tune. He made it sound sweet but I knew that night... I sold it not long after. I sold the mandolin. Arthritis sucks. I went down the vocal cord/smoking route too a while before that... I can still talk without too many problems but singing any more that the last line of a verse among others has been a chore. Amos visited on his way east two years ago and I managed a few beats on the Rhan and a few last lines on some song verses. Alas, I fear that will be the last of it. As far as my three Bodhrans, I will never sell them... NObody will buy them!

Kendall... I had to curtail playing before arthritis struck due to a ganglion. Just days ago, the damn thing burst! I think it was caused by jarring my wrist while scraping ice off my driveway. I haven't tried to play Rhan again yet but??? Ya never know, eh? Hang on to that guitar a while yet.

Try the ukulele.

There's quite a few on the ukulele forum I belong to who have come from guitar, several having had to give up for reasons similar to yours have tried ukulele and found they could manage it because it's so much smaller and lighter. I have the beginnings of arthritis in my wrists but I am able to cope with the ukulele fine.

Check out playing a guitar with 12 frets to the body rather than the usual 14. This involves less bending of the wrist to play. And a short scale, which puts less tension on the strings. And maybe silk-and-steel or silk-and-bronze strings.

I had to give up dreadnoughts years ago. Being short and well...thickset made the reach hard enough. Those and being old made it impossible. Is Jacqui's guitar any easier for you?

Don't quit until you've tried everything.

Kendall, my friend - I've never played guitar even a fraction as well as you - but I have had arthritis for almost 50 years (sometimes awful, mostly hidden and only coming out if I overdo things) - and I have found that gloves that support my wrists and thumbs let me play a lot more songs than I could if I didn't use them. I don't need them all the time - and probably wouldn't use them if I was playing in public unless I was already hurting - but they let me practice, and do a bit of singing with Charlie from time to time.

I've been talked out of selling the Taylor. It is insured for $1500.00, so, no folkie is going to spend that much. I paid $900.00 for it in 1993.

Furthermore, I told Bernie Houlahan years ago that I was leaving it to him when I snuff it. It seems I bought it just before he was able to get back to the store to grab it himself.

Dan, I have used a product called Voltarin gel, but it is not effective.
Many years ago I built a mountain dulcimer, but didn't get very far with that. I also had an auto harp.
Picks, I use a flat pick that was one of Rick Fieldings, I started on a thumb pick,I also play without a pick.

In its day, the model T Ford was a great machine to give us an advantage over time and distance, but even the restored ones now are next to useless except as a relic from the past. I'm sure you get the similarity.

Sorry to hear that you have been forced to cease playing.

I also suffer from arthritis and had to stop.

I bought an electronic keyboard and practiced on it most days. Took a bit of getting used to ( I played piano and keyboards years ago ).
Because of the arthritis I have to "fudge" around some but I gradually got some movement back.

When I read your message I got out my guitar and find I can play it again. Not as well as I used to but much better than a couple of years ago when I was forced to stop. For instance I can't plat barred full chords but I can get around that But my finger-picking hand has improved with using the keyboard to an extent where I have about 75% of what I had.

I Hope you can find some way to play again if not guitar something else. You are too good and we will miss your music.

If Don Firth were alive he would have jumped in with information about any number of smaller but good sounding guitars he has tried over the years. Because he was mostly in a wheel chair, he tended to keep the instrument lighter and smaller to be held (and played) more easily.

Just in case, a few years ago I found a remedy that takes away the pain from my wrists and knees. I don't usually like medicine and I never advertise panaceas but just in case you want to give it a try, Kendall, I use 'Premium Pain Spray'. When pain won't let me relax enough to sleep I get out of bed and spray the knee or the wrist - or both - and within four or five minutes most of the pain is gone.

I order them online: 3 bottles for $30.00. Apparently the only active ingredient is menthol. Oh, and as soon as the skin dries, the pungent smell is gone. I always keep it on hand.

In response to a large number of friends protests, I am going to remove the guitar from the auction, at least for the time being. I acted in haste out of despair. To consider selling a guitar that is insured for $1500 so cheap is just crazy..

Seriously, you folks are priceless. your concern and support have really boosted my mood.
As far as singing goes, that is out of the question. Without vocal cords it is impossible.
I don't know if I have ever admitted this here but the fact is, I have never thought of myself as a singer, or a guitarist. I've always thought of myself as a story teller and humorist. Neither of those require a singing voice or pain free hands.
That being said, what the hell am I weeping about? I'm a published author, (two books,the new one is selling like pardons in a prison) a Grammy award nominee, (Thanks to Dan Schatz). I've spread Maine humor all over the USA and even to Scotland and England. I'm famous among those who know me.:-)and most of the people I know like me.

Losing my singing voice is the most cruel cut of all, but, with the help of great friends I survived it. I will beat this too 'cause I'm tougher than tripe, and a Taurus to boot.

If not, try mountain dulcimer - a very easy instrument to play. I like to put mine on a table and play it, since a lap absorbs so much sound. If the dulcimer is set up right, there should be almost no pressure in the fingers, and you keep your wrists level (like a good pianist) so you don't flex your wrists and ask for carpal tunnel problems.

You may not wish to play it with your act, but for solace at home - why not?

One form of arthritis (don't know which type, I'm afraid) is an infection and can be eased by eating black cherries, which contain a natural anti-biotic. 7 a day, best fresh, or frozen (hard to get, but maybe easier now stores offer wider selections). I gather tinned ones are over-processed so don't do the business. Long shot, but worth a try.

My Uncle Gene was addicted to his pipe. He'd smoke it everywhere, even during his work as a night soil excavation engineer, or maybe especially then. During sleep. While drinking beer (he used a straw for the beer). Duck hunting. Everywhere.

And then, one day, he heard a saxophone being played and fell in love with that deep, sexy sax sound.

Using all of his savings he rushed out and bought himself a custom-made saxophone. Tempered steel, just like my Uncle, and covered with a covering of gilt a quarter of an inch thick that was made from gold bars he'd found on an abandoned train back in Wyoming (that was his story). A reed crafted from the finest, thinnest hornbeam. Mutes (a gift from his mother) of the best cork from Portugal.

But my Uncle still wanted his pipe. He tried everything, but after a day and a half of constant sax he knew that while he loved his sax his love for his pipe (and certain visits by the local police) told him that he couldn't have both. And so, with great sadness and after no little drain on his gold supply, he put sax out of his life.

Oh, it was still there, mounted like a moosehead on the wall. Oft he would look at it and sigh and dream of the Life Left Behind, of his now-quashed dream of being a one-man band with his pipe and his sax, rich and famous.

But as he told me in later years, waving your pipe and bag around while having sax in public is not the best path for a young man to pursue if he wants to stay out of jail.

I don't remember what point I was going to make, but it's a good story and oh! so true. I can even show you the type of sax he used to have.

Finished? Never! Lots of good advice on this thread. A dear friend of mine lamented that he couldn't contribute to folk music when it became too painful to play his guitar. I suggested he sing unaccompanied, which he did. He now runs one of the best folk sessions in these parts. And he picked up a guitar the other day!

I am sorry to hear that Kendall. I have arthritis on the fingers of my left hand and find playing painful at times. I often have a tennis ball in that hand and always flex my fingers with it when I am out walking or sitting reading, it doesn't cure it , but it help with flexibility.

I've got to admit that my observations are along the lines of if life gives you lemons make limoncello. But I heard you sing and tell stories at the FSGW Getaway and my impression is that part of the charm of your singing and storytelling is that you are unfinished. Your audience understands that there is more to come. I know I will return to the getaway with that expectation. There is an uncomfortable truth about traditional music: much of it was sung unaccompanied. I've heard Hortie Barker accompany himself on the piano, but I don't think he ever did this in public. Rick Ward plays the fretless banjo but he sings "Jobal Hunter" unaccompanied. Cecil Sharp heard only one singer in the Southern Appalachians sing with a musical instrument, a woman in Charlottesville VA. (And Sharp connived at the location. He must have known that Charlottesville is in the Piedmont.) What's more there is a tradition of embedding songs in a story and I think you are well suited to give that a try. So I'm hoping that next fall I will hear stories from you in which there are songs.

Jacqui has a smaller guitar that Nick Apollonio built for her. It is much more friendly than the Gibson or the Taylor. I find that using a capo at the 4th or 5th fret helps to ease the wrist pain.

I now have sharp burning pain in the muscles of my wrists. Is there no end?

I have osteoarthritis and at the moment am successfully keeping it at bay with Glucosamine, Omega 3 and Cider Vinegar. It means I can carry on playing guitar plus other added bonuses - turning keys, doing up buttons....

I'm sure you'd've tried these, but they work for me, very noticeably.

Cider Vinegar sounds absurd, but Google it.

Kendall-who-is-NOT-finished,and others facing such a painful decision-

One big reason people with arthritis are encouraged to continue playing an instrument, knitting, crocheting, carving, kneading bread dough...anything that allows you to use your hands and wrists is that such activities tend to help maintain and improve both mobility and strength, thereby reducing overall pain.

You might want to look into:
*Use of heat and arnica gel to increase mobility before/after playing
*Warm-up exercises aimed specifically at the arthritis
*Strengthening and stretching exercises
*Wearing elastic "sleeves"/fingerless gloves made to hold body heat around the painful wrist/hand areas.
*Work with someone (like Ron Pinkham at Woodsound) to find
      technique changes for better use of your available mobility
*Appropriate wrist braces, usually used at night
*Trying different instruments and different techniques
      (smaller, lower action, electric, mountain dulcimer,
      open tuning simple less stressful chords, etc.)
*Working with an arthritis specialist who also understands
      the needs of musicians.

If leaving guitar playing behind is your preferred choice, fair enough- yet do please find other ways to strengthen and use your hands and wrists.

Kendall's guitar playing is important to him. His beautiful singing is now only in our hearts and on his recordings. He and Jacqui have made a good team with Jacqui singing and Kendall doing recitations and guitar accompaniment. It's a mighty hard thing to face, giving up guitar in those circumstances.

Kendall, just mull it over, please? You may find other ways to use the guitar that don't require you to play like you once did. You may find a physical therapist can help those wrists.

Do as you must- just give yourself time to think it through.

You played your guitar and other instruments a long longer than my father did. Due to arthritis he stopped playing guitar altogether in his late 60s and sang unaccompanied or with another player after that. It is sad, but I think it was also kind of liberating.

The pain is in my wrists. I've tried an open G, but they all need some wrist movement. I will still have my old J-45 Gibson, 1954 that Mallett gets when I snuff it.

I gave away my 100 year old fiddle a couple of years ago. The position 0f my left wrist was torture.

Before you give up completely mate, have you tried some open tunings? Open D for instance? it's a lot easier on the fingers than standard tuning.

Well I had to stop playing the harmonica in public last year due to advancing deafness. But don't be too downhearted. The decision to stop was hard, but I actually found it to be a blessed relief in the end because I'd struggled on unhappily for a long time before facing up to the reality. I'm quite happy tootling away at home and having a good barney with anyone who'll take me on, and I've just listened to a late Beethoven quartet.

Well folks, I started playing guitar 65 years ago, and I stopped today. Age and arthritis in every joint makes playing guitar and Mandola too painful. It is with a heavy heart that I now offer my Taylor 810 and my octave mandolin for sale.
The Taylor is a 1982, one of the best guitars I have ever played. Dave Mallett played it and remarked, "That is one kick ass guitar." Asking $600.00 firm
The mandola, like new, $200.00.
