Codail A Linbh (Liz Madden)

Adhraim mo leanbh beag tagth' ar an saol
Codail, a linbh, go sámh
Adhraim a laige, a loime nocht faon
Codail, a linbh, go sámh

Inis, a ghrá, liom, id' luí sa mhainséar
Inis cén fath dhuit bheith sínte san fhéar
Is tú coimhde na ngrásta 'gus Íosa, Mac Dé
Codail, a linbh, go sámh

A Mhuire, a mhathair's a bhuime mhín tséimh
Codail, a linbh, go sámh
Is mé coimhde na ngrásta 'gus Íosa, Mac Dé
Codail, a linbh, go sámh

Ach go beo bocht a tháinig le mian ar an saol
Chun deoraithe fánacha a shaoradh ón éag
Is nuair 'chrochfar in airde mé
claonfaid chugam féin
Codail, a linbh, go sámh
Codail, a linbh, go sámh

Codail, a linbh, go sámh

Inis, a ghrá, liom, id' luí sa mhainséar
Inis cén fath dhuit bheith sínte san fhéar
Is tú coimhde na ngrásta 'gus Íosa, Mac Dé
Codail, a linbh, go sámh
Codail, a linbh, go sámh

Carúl Loch Garman (Caroline Peyton)

Ó, tagaigí is adhraigí
An leanbh cneasta sa chró 'na luí
Is cuimhnígí ar ghrá an Rí
A thug dár saoradh anocht an Naí.

'S a Mhuire Mháthair i bParthas Dé,
Ar chlann bhocht Éabha guigh 'nois go caomh,
Is doras an chró ná dún go deo
Go n-adhraim' feasta Mac Mhuire Ógh.

I mBeithil thoir i lár na hoích'
Ba chlos an dea-scéal d'aoirí,
Go follas don tsaol ón spéir go binn
Bhí aingil a' canadh ó rinn go rinn.

"Gluaisigí' go beo," dúirt Aingeal Dé,
`Go Beithil sall is gheobhaidh sibh É
`na luí go séimh i mainséar tuí,
Siúd é an Prionsa, Mac Óg an Rí.'

Bualadh Bos (cast of Ros na Rún)

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

Tá'n Nollaig buailte linn,
Tá áthas ins an aer,
Tá sneachta ar an talamh,
Tá réaltaí ins an spéir.

Tá muid ag dul a chodladh
's tá ár stocaí réidh.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois
Anuas an simléar.

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

A Dhaidí, brostaigh ort,
's cuir do mhála síos.
Líon suas na stocaí beaga
le féiríní arís.

Is mithid duit imeacht
suas an simléar.
Tá páistí beaga ag fanacht leat
i ngach aon áit faoin spéir.

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
bualadh bos go léir.
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anois,
anuas an simléar.

An Nollaig Theas (Timothy Dennehy)

Dia do bheatha 'dir asal is damh gan riar
Dia do bheatha id' leanbh, id Fhlaith gan chiach
Dia do bheatha ód' Fhlaithis go teach na bpian
Dia do bheathasa 'Íosa.

Dún do shúil a Rí an tSolais, dún do shúile ríoga
Dún do shúil a Shaoi an tSonais, dún do shúile síoda.

Tá bóithrín fada fágtha id' dhiaidh

Dia Do Bheatha (Róisín O'Grady - Soprano; Eamon Sweeney - Baroque Guitar)

Dia do bheatha, a Naí anocht
Do ghabh id'dhiagacht daonnacht
Dár saoradh a chnú chroí
A Bhrú mhaothghlan Mhaighdine

Anocht dob íseal dár bhFlaith
i gcró cúng an asail
Mo chion le tháinig Dá thoil
Dár fhagaibh Neamh um Nollaig

Gaol is grá, trócaire is toil
Le dtug Dia a Mhac dá mhalairt
Dár ndíon ar chathair na gciach
Rí is Athair is Aondia

Dia do bheatha, a Naí anocht
Do ghabh id'dhiagacht daonnacht
Dár saoradh a chnú chroí

Crann na silíní (Mícheál Ó Concheannain)

Trí fichid bliain a bhí Naomh Joseph
Nuair a chuaigh sé ag treorú Mhuire mháthair,
Ó is é a fuair an dán
tá níb fhearr ná an dóthain tí

Ó dhiúltaigh sé don choróin agus don ór
a bhí groí daighe;
Agus b'fhearr leis go mór mór
a bheith le treorú Mhuire mháthair.

Ó lá amháin dá raibh an cúpla
ag dul thríd an ngairdín,
Bhí silíní úra an chrainn uaithe
agus bláth istigh

Chuir Muire ansin dúil
agus a tnúth mór sa láthair
Ón mboladh na n-úllaí
a bhí ansin go cumhraithe ag Ard-Rí.

Ansin a labhair Muire máthair
De chomhrá lag fann,
"Tabhair dom cuid de na torthaí
atá fás ar an gcrann.

Ó tabhair iad do mo ghlacadh,
Mar tá mé lag fann,
Is tá tobar na ngrásta
ag fás in mo bhroinn."

Ansin a labhair Naomh Joseph,
Ba de chomhrá lag mall,
"Ní domhsa," a deir sé, "Is córa sin,
Agus ní háil liom do chlann."

"Torthaí sin eadrainn, a Naomh Iósaef,
tá tú damn,
Tá dlite mian do chroí a bhaint
glan díreach ón gcrann."

Ansin a labhair leanbh Íosa
A bhí go naofa faoina broinn,
"Ó ísligh," a deir sé, "go híseal,
Ina fianaise, a chrainn."

D'umhlaigh an crann síos di
Ina fianaise gan mhoill,
Nó go bhfuair sí mian a croí istigh
Glan díreach den chrann.

Nuair a chonaic is a chuala Naomh Joseph sin,
Ó chaith sé é féin faoin talamh,
Agus thóir sé an maiteanas ó rí an ghrásta
Faoi go ndearna sé an peaca.

"Téir abhaile," a deir sé le Naomh Muire,
"Is luigh ar do leaba,
Nó go dté mé go cathair Bheithile
Is go bhfaighe mé maiteanas in mo pheaca."

"Ní rachaidh mé abhaile," a deir Naomh Muire,
"Ná ní luífidh mé ar mo leaba,
Tá cuntas agam anois ó rí na ngrásta
Go bhfuil tú táir in do pheaca."

Trí lá ansin ón lá sin,
Bhí siad ag dul thrí chathair Bheithile,
Ag tóraíocht an lóistín
Ach ní bhfuair siad dún ná roinnt

Nó gur casadh iad insa stáblaín
Nach raibh díon air ná foscadh
Agus gur Rugadh an leanbh Íosa
Ar an bplán agus as ógh.

Trí lá ansin ón lá sin
d'fhiafraigh Muire dá leanbh,
"A leanbh, a mhic mo chroí anois
Céard a dhéanfas muid feasta ó?"

"Beidh muid," a deir sé, "Dé Céadaoin
. . ."

Nollaig Shona 2012 (TG Lurgan)

Tada móran uaim don Nollaig
Aon rud amháin nach bhfuil ar fáil
'S ní spéis liomsa na féiríní
Ag bun an chrainn san seomra suí
Ní chrochfaidh mé aon stoca Nollag
An tinteán lom don chéad uair riamh
Níl Santaí in ann mo mhian a shásamh
Is cuma céard a thugann sé
Ní theastaíonn uaim ach rud amháin
Níos mó ná rud ar bith ar domhan
Tabhair dhom (toram) mo mhian is mó
Níl uaimse don Nollaig ach thúúúú!

Tá na réalta ag lonnradh thuas
'S an sneachta ag tíocht anuas
Chuile pháiste ar bís – 's gach aon rud faoi réir
Te teolaí istigh faoin bpluid
Sona sásta lenár gcuid
Codlaidh go sámh
Tá fhios a'd anois go bhfuil Santaí insan sleigh ..

Bhuel, nár bhreá dá mbeadh an Nollaig linn gach lá
Daoine ag spaoi , gealgháireach ar a sáimhín só gan fáth
Bhuel, nárr bhreá dá mbeadh an Nollaig linn gach lá
Ceol na cloig ag fógairt na Nollag

Bhfuil na soilse lasta 's an crann crochta sa hall?
Bhfuil an litir curtha 's mbeidh Santaí teacht ar ball?
A mbeidh na reindeer i mbun oibre?
'S a bhfuil tú in ann a rá?
Go raibh tú an-mhaith 's gur ort a bheas an t-ádh

Bhuel – seo chugainn an Nollaig
Chuile dhuine ar bís faoi
Bliain nua mhaith a'd
'Nois an t-am le 'aidh spóirt 's spraoi

Bhuel – seo chugainn an Nollaig
Chuile dhuine ar bís faoi
Bliain nua mhaith a'd
'Nois an t-am le 'aidh spóirt 's spraoi

Martin, I've been singing a song each day in Irish for around a month to help improve my pronunciation (I've been reading a lot of Irish literature - literature in English but with words in Irish scattered throughout which I want to pronounce correctly) and because it's fun, but I don't actually speak Irish. Maybe some day I will. I put your comment through an online translator which came up with this:

Collections nice, alright! As we could be aware of her translation - age, author etc?

I can give you the links to the lyrics (and I'll continue to do so with future posts in this thread). They won't match up completely with the lyrics I've posted because I've adjusted the lyrics to the performances I've linked to.

Codail A Linbh (Liz Madden)

Carúl Loch Garman (Caroline Peyton)

Dhá Lá Deag na Nollag (Scoil Ghaeilge Ghearóid Tóibín)

Bualadh Bos (cast of Ros na Rún) (this is a youtube video with lyrics included - a different video from the one I linked to in the earlier post)

An Nollaig Theas (Timothy Dennehy) (lyrics are also included with video I linked to in the earlier post)

Dia Do Bheatha (Róisín O'Grady - Soprano; Eamon Sweeney - Baroque Guitar) (in this case, this was the only page I found which has the lyrics which match those used by the performers in the video I linked to in the earlier post; I found different lyrics at a number of sources including mudcat )

Crann na silíní (Mícheál Ó Concheannain)

Nollaig Shona 2012 (TG Lurgan) (lyrics also included with the video which I linked to in the earlier post)

Thanks, AmyLove. My original comment translates as: "Nice collection, alright. Can you tell us about the translations - age, author etc.?". This was because, while some were originally in Irish, others are translations of English (language) originals. Don't worry about it - and congratulations on your dedication!

Martin, you're welcome. Oh, I see. No, I don't know about the sources of the translations. Frankly, I've been relieved simply to find both a recording and the corresponding lyrics for any one song. This is more challenging than one might guess. Thanks. I'm enjoying the process.

Soilse na Nollag (altan)

(lyrics source)

Tá soillse na Nollag ag loinnriú le bua,
O Cheart Lár na cathrach go huaigneas a' tuath
Tá coinnéal na Nollag san fhuinneog 'na suí,
Ag fáiltiú roimh Mhuire, a theacht chun a tí

CHORUS:
O tar chugainn, a Mhuire, 's beannaigh ár saol
Beidh aoíocht le fail agat féin 's do naoin'
Scrios as ár mbeatha an ghráin 's an fhuath
'S neartaigh an grál inár gcróithe atá dúr

Tá an Ré is na Réalta ag soillsiú sa spéir,
Agus ciúineas na Nollag le mothú san aeir
Tá 'n saibhir 'san daibhir ar aon intinn amháin,
Ag fáiltiú roimh Iosa isteach inár saol

CHORUS:
O tar chugainn, a Mhuire, 's beannaigh ár saol
Beidh aoíocht le fail agat féin 's do naoin'
Scrios as ár mbeatha an ghráin 's an fhuath
'S neartaigh an grál inár gcróithe atá dúr

Go ngealaí na soillse an ród atá romhainn,
Is bí thusa a Iosa ár dtreorú go buan
Nó solus is gile dár shoillsí go fóill,
Do theachtsa a Iosa isteach inár saol

CHORUS:
O tar chugainn, a Mhuire, 's beannaigh ár saol
Beidh aoíocht le fail agat féin 's do naoin'
Scrios as ár mbeatha an ghráin 's an fhuath
'S neartaigh an grál inár gcróithe atá dúr

There's slight background noise in the above linked video, but I chose it because I prefer that earlier version due to there being less "invasive" instrumentation. Here's the more recent version: Soilse na Nollag

Bí a Íosa Im' Chroí-Se (Séamus Begley & Oisín Mac Diarmada)

(lyrics source)

Bí, a Íosa, im' chroídh-se i gcuimhne gach uair,
Bí, a Íosa, im' chroídh-se le h-aithrighe go luath,
Bí, a Íosa, im' chroídh-se le cumann go buan,
ó, a Íosa, 'Dhé dhílis, ná sgar, Thusa, uaim.

Gan Íosa im' smuainte ní thaithnigheann liom féin,
Gan Íosa im' sgríbhinn, no foghar mo bhéil;
Gan Íosa im' ghníomha ní maith in san tsaoghal,
ó, a Íosa, 'Dhé dhílis, bí romham is am dhéidh.

'Sé Íosa mo Rí-se, mo Chara is mo ghrádh;
'Sé Íosa mo dhídean ar pheacaidh is ar bhás,
'Sé Íosa mo aoibhneas, mo sgáthán do ghnáth,
A's, a Íosa, 'Dhé dhilis, ná sgar uaim go bráth.

Both the above performance and lyrics source feature Audrey Nickel. I emailed her recently and she told me she's willing to help me with more lyrics to Christmas songs in Irish.

And the performance features Mary McLaughlin who has also helped me with my singing Christmas songs in Irish efforts.

I take this opportunity to thank them both publicly.

The CD isn't exactly new, I heard her sing some of the songs from it in 2008 and even then the CD wasn't new. I can't really see the price going down and to be honest, you wouldn't get many CDs in Ireland at that price, less so with postage included. Amazon appears to have downloads for separate tracks although I am not sure that offers much in the way of savings. Some tracks are on youtube.

Sa Stábla Sa Mhainséar (Cór Ainglí)

(lyrics source)

Sa stábla, sa mháinséar, tá naíonán 'na luí,
An naíonán beag Íosa 'bhéas fós linn mar rí.
Tá réaltaí ag soilsiú go hard insan spéir,
Ar an leanbh beag Íosa ina luí sa mháinséar.

Tá ciúnas mór thimpeall; tá draíocht san aer!
Tá aoibhneas is áthas ar an domhan go léir.
Tá Aingil na bhFlaithis ag síor-mholadh Dé.
Ard-mholadh d'Íosa, don leanbh beag glé.

Bí linne, a Íosa; bí linne go deo.
Bí linne san oíche; bí linne sa ló.
Tabhair grá do do pháistí; tabhair grá dúinn go síor.
Agus bímis dílis; bímis dílis go fíor.

A Leanbh Ghil Mhilis (Dordán)

(lyrics source)

A leanbh ghil mhilis do tháinig ón bhflaitheas anuas,
Chun scéala dea-mhéin is siochána ón neamh do bhreith thú,
Nach mór é an t-ionadh le rá thú id' luí insan bhfuacht,
Is gur tusa, a Shlánaitheoir ghrámhar, tiarna na gcumhacht.

Féach orainn, muintir na hÉireann, ag teacht os do chomhair,
Mar thángamar aingil is aoirí an oíche úd fadó.
Ó molaimid d'ainm ró-naofa, a Dhia na Slua,
Agus beirimid leatsa ár mbuíochas anois is go deo.

Go bhfóire tú orainn, a Íosa, a thug dóchas don tsaol,
Impímid go humhal ort ár muintir do chosaint ar bhaol.
Déan ainsprid na deighilte do dhíbirt amach uainn i gcéin,
Is is géar go mbeidh áitreabh ár sinsear faoi rath is faoi réir.

A leanbh ghil mhilis do tháinig ón bhflaitheas anuas,
Chun scéala dea-mhéin is siochána ón neamh do bhreith thú,
Nach mór é an t-ionadh le rá thú id' luí insan bhfuacht,
Is gur tusa, a Shlánaitheoir ghrámhar, tiarna na gcumhacht.

This mudcat thread I found - Lyr Req: Leanbh Ghil Mhilis (from Dordán) - led me to the Dordán recording. And thanks to Audrey Nickel for posting the lyrics I used.

Finola is a wonderful singer - and a neighbour of mine, mar a tharlaíonn!

Beir bua.

Beautiful voice. How nice - perhaps you've heard her singing while she's out and about.
