just a thought. Off the top of my head:
song
lullaby
ballad
love lilt (as in Erriskay)

I'm sure the combined efforts of the Mudcat can provide more - Nouns only:

Anthem

any more?

strain
tune
refrain
lyric
melody

are really parts of a song.

strain is also a bit iffy.

and a poem needs to be a "poem set to music"

I am sure we could query other marginal terms.

FWIW Opera is plural, opus is the singular.

But it is all good fodder.

Thank you MGM.

Mr. Red..a thesaurus is a common resource...it is perhaps the most valuable asset, next to a Bible and dictionary, that anyone should own.

Your usual trolling region is "below the line." I suggest you stay in the dungeon.

To ask a question...and then spout "your superiority" to an answer is B. S.

Sincerely,

there's always one displaying their baggage! And idiosyncratic fluff.

There is also always someone who knows something you don't. Hence the OP. Which does, if I am not mistaken request only Nouns.

Folk Songs do occasionally reveal odd archaic/colloquial niceties which someone out there has, like an earworm, floating around that won't disappear.

And thankyou for labeling me an intellectual. Not something I would have conferred on a Black Cuntry mon, owr kid. But there you are.

'Scuse me while I pick up my own baggage, it is so much lighter.

It does irritate me, and no doubt others, that iTunes call all recordings "songs" when some of them are tunes, no words. Just tunes. But that there Mendelssohn set the precedent - "Lieder ohne Worte" - "Songs without words"!
